still Amazing“I’m so glad the Ronald McDonald House exists, and that people have thought to make a place like this!” –Sophia Zimmer, our cover mom.
I admit, I still feel a sense of amazement about San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House, even
after coming here each day for six years. This remarkable place exists because people like
you envisioned a way to help families stay close to their hospitalized children. Thirty-six years
after our founding, we’re here for families in their time of need—families like the Zimmers,
whose son Santiago suddenly found out he had cancer last summer.
At the Ronald McDonald House, families with hospitalized children may stay right where they
need to be, not stuck in traffic as critical moments go by. They may sleep, eat, shower, relax,
and decompress away from the worry and stress of the hospital. These simple basics make a
vital difference in keeping families strong for their hospitalized children.
This House exists because of outstanding community support. In these pages, you’ll see
many of the ways individuals and groups give their time and resources to make our House a
welcoming “home away from home” for the 47 families who sleep here every night, and for
the more than a hundred additional family members who find support here during the day.
We’re tremendously grateful.
Yet, there’s more to do. Our House is at capacity, and we hate to turn families away. In the
near term, we have the opportunity to make available up to 12 additional rooms for families
who need to stay for extended treatments. With your help, we can continue to support our
current families and welcome up to twelve more families for long-term stays.
We can’t do it without you! Volunteer as you can, and please give generously today. You’ll be
ensuring that more children have a hand to hold, a familiar face, and the love and support they
need. Please use the enclosed envelope or donate online at rmhcsd.org/donate.
Thank you for keeping this amazing place going strong.
Warmly,
Charles E. Day

courage for santiagoThe Zimmer boys and their dad love science fiction, tabletop war games, and Pokémon. Scott’s a university librarian, and Sophia homeschools 17-year-old Andrés and 11-year-old Santiago.
Santiago seemed low energy on a particularly hot July day. Then he was screaming in pain. After rushing to the emergency room, the family was shocked to learn that a tumor on Santiago’s liver had ruptured. They’d never even known of the tumor, which had likely been growing since his birth. It was cancer.
Sophia recalls asking the doctor, “Is he going to live? I can handle anything else.” The answer was yes. But Santiago would require multiple rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. In the most challenging times, the Ronald McDonald House helped the Zimmers stay strong together for Santiago. This game-loving boy wanted his family with him around the clock in his real life battle against cancer. Santiago and his family needed all the courage they could muster.
Scott and Sophia took turns, one spending the night at the hospital, while the other stayed with Andrés at the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House was especially important for Andrés, who has Asperger’s and a strong need for stability. “Andrés felt safe at the Ronald McDonald House with us,” Sophia remembers. “And then we could all be
together with Santiago during the day.”
The brothers are very close, and being together helped them manage the enormous challenges presented by Santiago’s illness.
Andrés was particularly good at helping Santiago stay calm when the nurses had to move him.
“I never thought about the Ronald McDonald House before. But I’m so glad it
exists, and that people have thought to make a place like this for families. You can’t do it alone. You’ve got to have a community. I want everyone to know about it!”
Santiago’s been changed by the experience. Yes, he’s got curly hair now, instead of straight. And at such a young age, he’s developed compassion and understanding for the pain of others. He’ll need ongoing checkups, but now he’s cancer-free and back to his preferred battles—those against his beloved brother on their favorite board games.

sdg&e® employees: outstanding commitment to Volunteering and givingVolunteering at San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House is a great way to make a difference personally—and it can be a great team building experience, too! Since 2014, teams of SDG&E® volunteers have come to our House each month to serve free, hot meals for families with hospitalized children. Their help with dinner preparation, service, and cleanup gets about 200 plates of food out to nourish weary families in their time of need.
In addition, SDG&E employees have offered enrichment activities with a STEAM focus for kids at our House (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). Their commitment continues to grow, with involvement in Red Shoe Day and a hosted holiday party at our House.
Their generosity goes beyond volunteering: employees will contribute nearly $20,000 this
year through cash contributions as well as payroll deductions, matching funds, and Volunteer Incentive Program donations through the Sempra Energy Foundation! We are tremendously grateful for their enthusiasm and commitment, as well as for the remarkable matching support from SDG&E and the Sempra Energy Foundation.

Volunteers Make a difference All Week longVolunteers are the heart of San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House. Each month, hundreds of individuals share their time and talent to make sure families experience the comforts of home while caring for their hospitalized child. People of all backgrounds, interests, and stages of life make a difference at our House. Here are just a few of the special people who volunteered in one week.
individual volunteers—reception From 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., front desk volunteers play a key role in greeting guests and making them feel at home. Reception volunteers welcome visitors, answer phones, accept deliveries and donations, and help keep our great room tidy and welcoming. They may also help with special projects like data entry, mailings and filing, and other administrative tasks. Our most experienced volunteers help orient families at check-in and give tours to groups.
Bill DeGraff takes time from his consulting work to volunteer each Monday. “My family used the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House years ago. I know how important this place is to families who never expected to need it.”
Groups of volunteersGroups typically start their volunteering at our House by serving supper to families. We also have some special relationships that are a great help to our operations. Navy groups come weekly for big upkeep projects like transporting furniture or power cleaning our patios. Through a training partnership with Job Corps, student volunteers get culinary, hospitality, and administrative experience at our House.
For the past two years, volunteers from East Valley Christian Fellowship in El Cajon have come to help organize the flow of food
donations on Mondays. Pictured here are lynette armagost and rosie lang. They rotate food stock for freshness, clean refrigerators, and take what we can’t use to their food pantry for immediate distribution. Lynette notes, “It’s a little thing we can do for the families here, and it helps make sure nothing goes to waste. We’re glad to help.”

individual Volunteers—special talentsMany volunteers bring special skills or interests, from licensed massage therapists and hair stylists to magicians and crafters. Have a talent to share? Let’s see if we can put it to use!
Melissa Mckinstry leads drop-in yoga for children and families on Fridays. These sessions are filled with calm breathing and gentle stretching, as well as frequent giggles and lots of smiles. “I just love volunteering here. I’m so glad to bring a little peaceful centering to their days.”
Retired marketing executive lulu Hsu plays piano at lunchtime to provide a peaceful background environment for families taking a break from the hospital. Lulu’s goal is to “make every sound beautiful” for families who come here for respite. She especially likes it when children come to see her playing up close. “Even when you’re in the background, you feel like you make a difference here.”

enrichment Activities offer a change of Pace When families are staying at the Ronald McDonald House for several days, weeks, or even months during a child’s extended treatment or rehabilitation, it’s important to bring some variety to life near the hospital. Several nonprofits and groups provide valuable enrichment activities for children who are with us during a sibling’s hospitalization.
resounding Joy and villa Musica each offer music therapy activities for parents and children twice a month. Hearts and Hooves therapy brings miniature horses to the Ronald McDonald House and also hosts our families at their ranch. Volunteer Melissa McKinstry leads yoga for kids on Fridays. Field trips include regular visits to the new Children’s Museum, as well as “camp” activities that bring children to the beach and San Diego’s many tourist attractions during summer vacation and holiday breaks. These special activities bring a wonderful spark of fun for kids and families.
inside and out, improving our House for familiesWe’ve been busy making improvements inside and out at our House. The Joseph Clayes III Great Room is greater than ever, with lighter, brighter paint donated by vista Paint. It was a big job to clear out our living and dining areas, and we had to close the House to day visitors for several days. The results are worth it! Thanks to Jack Pecoraro for donating the services of his painters.
It’s not easy for greenery to thrive up here in our sunny rooftop courtyards, but Pacific Green landscape is doing a tremendous job for us, with donated materials and weekly free maintenance. They’ve cleared out old plants that were past their prime, and installed an improved weather-responsive irrigation system. They’re in the process of replenishing our planter boxes with new mulch, drought-resistant plants, and hardy trees. We’re looking forward to new growth and ever-more pleasant outdoor spaces for our families. We thank Michael Regan, owner of Pacific Green Landscape, for his generous contributions.

roMP 2016: House Party for san diego’s ronald Mcdonald HouseFor the lucky seventh year of our annual ROMP gala, we took the theme back…WAY BACK…to the decade when our Ronald McDonald House began. Over 300 guests came to the Fairmont Grand Del Mar for a 1980s-era House Party on October 29. Bartenders juggled drinks like in the Tom Cruise movie, Cocktail, and break dancers inspired partygoers to “bust a move.” At dinner, the speed painter Art Attack created a giant portrait of ’80s-icon Prince for auction that night. After the evening’s program, the Mighty Untouchables lit up the floor with stellar dance hits.
We are especially grateful to Ronald McDonald House Charities® of San Diego Board Chair Brian Cahill and his wife Robin, who motivated outstanding giving through their $75,000 gift to match Fund-A-Family donations that evening. Special thanks also go to Board member Susan Hoehn and her husband Bill, who with Hoehn Motors donated the grand prize for the 7th Annual Hoehn Motors Porsche Raffle: a 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster or $50,000 cash. We thank Executive Committee members for bringing together a blast of an event, and the Honorary Committee and sponsors for their support.

A Quarter century of golf for the ronald Mcdonald HouseTwenty five years! We’re marking a quarter century of golfers coming out on the greens in support of San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House. The rain held off as we returned to the pristine Pauma Valley Country
Club for our 25th Invitational this October. Ronald McDonald offered his humorous tips and encouragement to the 128 participants who tested their skill and luck on the course.
It was an afternoon of challenging and fun golf on one of the county’s top-rated courses. General Chair Brian Cahill returned for a sixth year and took the lead in lining up outstanding sponsorship support. Thanks to Brian and our dedicated Golf Committee, this was our best year ever, raising more than $275,000 to help care for families at San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House.

tables for tots Tables for Tots is a friendly competition and auction in which teams from some of our area’s top architecture and design firms create one-of-a-kind play sets from a basic child’s table. In this year’s “U.S. for Tots,” designers contributed tables made into rocket ships, aircraft carriers, LEGO blocks, a lemonade stand, and more. Held at Francis Parker School, this year’s event raised $70,000, with an eight year total of nearly $350,000!
Thanks to Marilyn Mattson of G/M Business Interiors, along with committee members Lisa McClinton and Nicole Ilie, for organizing this wonderful annual benefit. Special thanks to Steve Easley, president & CEO of G/M Business Interiors, for his firm’s outstanding support in eight years of Tables for Tots.

remembering ralph V. Whitworth (1955-2016)San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House remembers Ralph V. Whitworth, co-founder of the activist investment fund Relational Investors LLC and of the Immunotherapy Foundation, a public non-profit dedicated to cancer immunotherapy research. Ralph was a prominent businessman who sat on the boards of 11 public companies and served as chairman of three-Waste Management, Apria Healthcare and Hewlett Packard. Married to Fernanda “Fé” Whitworth and a father of four, Ralph was an avid supporter of San Diego’s community, including our Ronald McDonald House.
Ralph and Fé first visited our House in 2010. The vital importance of our “home away from home” spoke personally to Fé’s own experience of caring for her mother during her battle with cancer. She saw that “having a place to rest, have a meal, and recharge, while remaining close to loved ones” is enormously valuable. Fé went on to chair our 2012 ROMP. She also co-chaired our 2013 ROMP and served on the Executive Committee of our 2016 ROMP.
Ralph lived with passion and commitment, and inspired those traits in others. A family man, friend, and car connoisseur, Ralph will be remembered as a fighter and advocate, improving countless lives along the way.

When you’re planning your estate…Create a legacy of care through a bequest to ronald McDonald House Charities of san Diego.Making a gift to our Ronald McDonald House from your IRA, either today or later through your estate plan, will have a tremendous impact on the families we serve. Raymond Ehly did just that, funding the Raymond E. Ehly Foundation for children’s health, education and welfare. Mr. Ehly’s widow, Joni Ehly, asked their adult children to research particular needs in their community. We are honored to be one of the recipients of this family’s generous giving.
You can make a real and lasting impact on our House families. Please consider Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego in your estate plans. Your gift ensures a future mom and dad can stay close to their hospitalized child with a comfortable bed, hot meals, and caring people waiting for them across the street.
Estate gifts may include a percentage of your IRA or other retirement plan assets. You also may consider a gift through your will, living trust, life insurance plan, or a charitable remainder trust. Significant income and/or estate benefits may be available to you as a result of a planned gift.
to learn more, contact our president and ceo chuck day at 858-598-2420 or via email at [email protected].

Keeping families close, so they’re together when it matters most.Caring and generous people like you are keeping families together and strong every day at San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House. Community support means that:
• 1,200 families stay with us each year—families caring for our region’s most critically ill or injured children.
• 16,000 additional people relax and renew themselves during the day while caring for a hospitalized child.
• 100 children learn and grow at our on-site School Away from School while staying with their parents at the Ronald McDonald House.
thankyou!
You keep families close with your gift.
for families caring for hospitalized children, we are their “home away from home”.
