Page 1 of 24 Connect ing to the CLASS VPN Gateway CLASS is a web6based application, and for additional security CLASS can only be accessed from within your office network. Each office’s Internet network is ‘whitelisted’ by CLASS to allow each through the security gateway, which means the rest of the world can be locked out. This is a highly effective security approach. However there are some Centres and users that for various reasons will require ‘Remote’ access from outside the office. Examples include where workers need to access CLASS in remote locations such as when working in Outreach locations or regularly from courtrooms or tribunals. There are also a handful of centres that are unable to provide the required static configuration details that are needed for office security set up. Consequently there is a second method of accessing CLASS, via a method called a Virtual Private Network (VPN). But remote access requires particularly vigilant standards of individual user online and personal security, as users can easily be in danger of a creating a serious breach of privacy and legal practice standards. For example, devices (laptops / tablets etc.) accessing CLASS cannot be left by themselves, as this could risk outsiders gaining access to the CLASS database. Screens should be set to fade to blank soon after no use, (using screensaver technology) and devices should also become password lockable on very short timeframes, using security set ups. To gain VPN Access Step 1) Centre Senior Staff must approve Access, and acknowledge that User is aware of enhanced security standards. Step 2) CLASS admins (or CLASS Helpdesk) can then create a User Account VPN name and password, from the User Account page in CLASS. A time limit can be set up in this process, e.g. for 3 months – this is recommended. Step 3) Any device that will be used to connect to CLASS will need to have a VPN set up configured using the VPN Name and Password. This must be connected before accessing CLASS (and it is recommended disconnected, when not using CLASS) Step 4) Once connected via the VPN, the user will be able to access the CLASS login page, and will use their CLASS username and password (NOTE: This not the same as their VPN Name and password) to log into their centre. The rest of this describes the process of setting up the VPN for commonly used devices / operating systems. For Further assistance: Contact the CLASS Helpdesk: 1300 484 498
