For artists there is a strong connection between art and life. In many cases, their life is art and art is their life. In order to promote this seamless interplay between an artist’s life and their work, an artist needs to be living in an environment that is conducive to this experience. This environment should allow the artist to work uninhibited but also allow them to give back to the community, in the form of classrooms and galleries. Using the Schroeder Schrader House as an inspiration, the design of the Artist In Residence is one that reflects this interplay between art and life not only on the interior of the building but also the exterior. The interior is arranged in a manner that allows the artists to have their work and living spaces adjacent to one another, thus allowing them to live inside their work. There are also designated areas for interaction with the public that allow the artists to display or sell their work. The exterior of the building is reminiscent of a Mondrian composition, executed in modern materials that have a similar appearance to the building’s surroundings; allowing the Artist In Residence to be integrated in its surrounding urban fabric.
