    Coaches CornerWelcome to another school year!!

    "As you begin changing your thinking, start immediately to change your behavior. Begin to act

    the part of the person you would like to become. Take action on your behavior. Too many

    people want to feel, then take action. This never works."-- John C. Maxwell

    Coaches CornerData Driven Decision Making is essential to SWPBIS implementation success. Continue to monitor

    data collection and use current data to guide discussions during the teams monthly meetings.

    Keep your team meetings focused. Establish meeting ground rules and expectations as a team and

    review them before each meeting, e.g. start and end meetings on time, stay on task, assure that all

    team members participate, etc. Plan an agenda for each meeting and assign roles to team members

    such as facilitator, timekeeper, and recorder to ensure you remain efficient, productive, and on task.

    Coaches CornerYour school-based team should be in the habit of meeting at least monthly. Be sure to set a

    schedule of meeting dates and times for the remainder the school year. Remember that all

    team work should be considered draft with an opportunity for faculty and staff feedback

    before implementation. Fall is a good to time to focus on how your team will establish or

    review definitions for major and minor behavioral infractions.

    Coaches CornerPrepare students and staff for CMT and/or CAPT testing. Brainstorm activities for

    reinforcing CMT/CAPT attendance. For example, have an attendance contest between

    classes or grades, or reinforce students who have full attendance with a social activity.

    Keep the team energized by celebrating student and staff successes. Use staff meetings as

    opportunities to recognize staff commitment to and involvement in the process.

    Coaches CornerRemember that behavior can have only two functions. We either act to get/obtain

    something sensory, social or tangible or to escape/avoid the same. Consider reviewing the

    basics of behavioral function with your staff. Focus on viewing your schools current data

    through a behavioral lens and let the data guide your decisions.

    difference for them to do so."- Fran Tarkenton

    Co hen, R., Kinca id, D., & Childs, K. (2007). Measuring Sc hoo l-Wide Positive Beha vior Support Imp leme nta tion: Deve lopme nt

    and Valida tion of the Benc hma rks of Qua lity (BOQ). Journal o f Positive Behav ior Interventions.

    When should the BOQ be completed?

    The BOQ should be completed annually

    in the spring of each school year

    (March/April).

    Who completes the BOQ?

    The district coach supports the school-

    based team in completing the BOQ.

    What does the BOQ measure?

    The BOQ uses 53 items to measure criti-

    cal elements aligned with the SW-PBIS

    training process, including:

    faculty commitment;

    effective procedures for dealing withdiscipline;

    data entry and analysis;

    expectations and rules;

    reward/recognition programs

    lesson plans for teaching;

    implementation plan;

    classroom systems; and

    evaluation.

    What are the benefits of the BOQ?

    Easy and quick to complete bycoaches and teams

    Provides immediate feedback to theteam

    Clarifies outcomes related to imple-mentation

    Useful in developing action plans forthe following year

    Assists states that are rapidly expand-ing PBIS in maintaining evaluation

    standards
