Endocrine System

•is similar to the nervous system because it sends messages from one part of the body to another

•unlike nerve control, endocrine (chemical) control is achieved through sending hormones usually through the circulatory system

Chunkin’ Time!

•How is the endocrine system similar to the nervous system?

•How is the endocrine system different from the nervous system?

•How do hormones get to where they are needed?

•Name some endocrine glands.

Page 4: Connect! Do you know of anyone who has to take thyroid medicine? Why? What causes gigantism? Do you know of anyone who is a diabetic? What causes it?

•protein hormones work by binding to receptor molecules in the cell membranes of target cells

Page 5: Connect! Do you know of anyone who has to take thyroid medicine? Why? What causes gigantism? Do you know of anyone who is a diabetic? What causes it?

• once a protein hormone binds to the receptor, a message is sent to the nucleus of the target cell, causing it to take some action

Lock and Key Model

•different hormones have different shapes and will only bind to the correspondingly shaped receptor molecules on/in target cells

Steroid hormones act a bit

differently…

see if you can figure out the

difference!

Chunkin’ Time!

• What is the name of the chemical site the hormone binds to?

• What is the cell called that the hormone acts on?

• Where are the receptors for protein hormones?

• How does a protein hormone get the cell to respond?

• How does a hormone “recognize” a target cell?

• Why is hormone recognition called the “Lock and Key Model”?

• How do steroid hormones work differently than protein?

Page 9: Connect! Do you know of anyone who has to take thyroid medicine? Why? What causes gigantism? Do you know of anyone who is a diabetic? What causes it?

• What kind of hormone has a receptor in the cell membrane?

• Another example is ADH (AntiDiuretic Hormone) which is released into the blood by the pituitary gland. It binds to receptors in the kidney cells telling them to keep more water, thus releasing less water in the urine.

Other hormones:

• Insulin…from the pancreas

• Thyroxin…from the thyroid gland

• Growth…from the pituitary gland

• Testosterone…from the testes

• Estrogen…from the ovaries

• Progesterone…from the ovaries

Note•Regulation is achieved by both the nervous and endocrine systems working together. These systems show similarities and differences.

Differences Similaritiesnerve responses are more both secrete chemicalsrapid than endocrineresponses both work by shape

nerve responses are of both play a major role inshorter duration than homeostasisendocrine responses

Chunkin’ Time!• What is the source, target, and job of ADH?

• Name 3 other hormones and their sources.

• What does regulation mean?

• What 2 systems work to regulate the body to maintain homeostasis?

• Give 3 similarities of the two systems.

• Give 2 differences between the 2 systems.

• What do these puzzle pieces have to do with the endocrine and nervous systems?

• Explain this diagram in terms of homeostasis.
