Connect UK.Introduction

Dear Reader

It has been a busy time since the last issue of Connect UK. Most recently, we were in attendance at the IAC Open Day, at their offices in Newport. This annual event is aimed at engineers, buyers, managers, maintenance and indeed, anyone interested in electrical control and automation. Also in May, we exhibited products from our device connectivity portfolio at Electronics Sourcing Live in Milton Keynes, which is a free, one-day networking event specifically designed for the UK electronics supply chain community, designers and manufacturing engineers.

We are now getting ready for our own Midlands CPD-accredited Surge Seminar which is taking place on 19th June. In addition, we have been engaged in booking up our exhibition presence for next year at Southern Manufacturing in Farnborough, SPE Offshore Europe in Aberdeen, Railtex at the NEC Birmingham and Electronics Sourcing Live at Milton Keynes.

In this issue of Connect UK, we draw your attention to how we support SMD assembly with our Push In PCB terminals – see pages 4 - 9. In addition, we highlight our FieldPower® modular base for decentralised automation which you will find on pages 11 - 13.

Industrial Ethernet solutions also feature strongly in this issue, with unmanaged fast Ethernet switches, Ethernet modbus gateways, unmanaged Power-over-Ethernet switches, new firmware of managed switches and 5 port managed switches as well as our Termseries Interface Adapter. All these can be found on pages 14 - 19.

And let’s not forget page 13, where you can find out about our pluggable SAI SVV M12 power distributor and KLBUE active shield clamp.

Your future lies in SMD assembly OMNIMATE Signal LSF-SMD provides enormous scope for design

Freedom of design in device development involves the goal of efficiently assembling printed circuit boards so as to ensure quality.

Our LSF-SMD family featuring “PUSH IN” direct connectivity supports the requirements of fully-automatic surface installation.

Maximum freedom with regard to PCB design calls for flexible terminal solutions that can also establish secure contacts with composite PCBs made from glass, ceramic or aluminium.

With our new LSF-SMD family, we are satisfying demands for fully-automatic PCB surface installation using the SMD soldering procedure. Two soldering pads per pole provide a high level of mechanical stability according to IPC A 610 Class 2. A reliable connection is established without tools thanks to “PUSH IN” direct connectivity.

The 3.50 mm, 5.00 mm and 7.50 mm pitches and the 90°, 135° and 180° conductor outlet directions cover a multitude of device requirements and offer high component density with a maximum connection cross-section of 1.5 mm². Use of the distortion-free insulating material LCP, which is resistant to high temperatures and has a moisture level of MSL 1, enables a high level of dimensional stability, thus guaranteeing co-planarity for the reflow soldering process without the need for a drying phase beforehand.

More design freedom for design ideasDrilled holes and feed-throughs on PCBs cost time, take up space and compromise the freedom of developers. Our wide SMD range featuring “PUSH IN” direct connectivity is economical and opens up new design possibilities. For LED devices featuring an aluminium cooling element, for instance, where no holes can be drilled.

Efficient assemblyAutomatic assembly is supported by the tape-on-reel packaging in standard belt widths. Pick-and-Place pads guarantee reliable attaching and setting down.

Stable soldering connectionsFeaturing two soldering pads per pole, LSF-SMD PCB terminals satisfy the most stringent mechanical fixing requirements without the need for additional mounting flanges.

Reliable processingUse of the LCP insulating material means that assembly can take place directly during the SMT process without the need for pre-drying. There is no risk of blisters forming.

Fast wire connection methodThe proven “PUSH IN” direct connectivity enables secure contacts up to 1.5 mm² without the need for tools. Conductors can be released simply and quickly by pressing the release button.

With its proven OMNIMATE series, Weidmüller is a long-standing partner of device manufacturers. What trends in this field does the technology of the SMD reflow soldering procedure respond to?

Ude: Device production in the electronics segment is consistently geared towards achieving a high degree of efficiency. To this end, it is essential that connection elements can be processed with the component assembly as part of a fully automatic procedure in a single production process. Maximum freedom in device design also relies on space being available on the PCB and the assembly of different kinds of material. This is also an area which calls for SMD surface mounting, which is now being used for both active and passive components.

What properties of SMD soldering enable the space-saving and design freedom benefits that you mentioned?

Ude: The use of SMD components frees up the rear of the PCB, which can then be used for attaching further components. In the best-case scenario, device manufacturers have twice the space available on their PCB – or they benefit from a circuit board that is only half the size so, ultimately, the complete device can be designed in a more compact fashion.

Other aspects include the assembly of different materials such as glass, ceramics or aluminium, which is influential in the development of LED illumination devices. This often involves the installation of aluminium heat sinks, which provides no possibility for drilled holes. In such cases, SMD technology is the ideal solution for attaching the necessary connection components.

What characterises the new OMNIMATE LSF-SMD product family from Weidmüller?

Ude: Depending on the scope of the application field, we rely on a unique range of products. The LSF-SMD family expands our flexible product line of LSF-SMT components, which are suitable for reflow soldering, by meeting all of the requirements of fully automatic PCB surface mounting for three main grid dimensions and three conductor exit versions. In combination with its ubiquitous “PUSH IN” connection system, we are able to satisfy the demand for high efficiency – from circuit board assembly to the installation of ready-to-use devices.

One of the goals in having freedom of design during device development is to efficiently assemble printed circuit boards while ensuring a high level of quality. Handling benefits and time savings are especially important during the installation process. In the following interview, Jürgen Ude, a specialist for SMD technology at Weidmüller, explains the benefits of the expanded range of OMNIMATE LSF-SMD products featuring a practical direct push-in connection.

Device Connectivity

Thanks to our tried-and-tested OMNIMATE products, we are a longstanding partner of renowned device manufacturers.Their needs are of primary importance when it comes to developing new products and solutions. Our focus is therefore on using the increasingly popular SMD reflow soldering process. As the technique allows the connection elements to be processed fully automatically with the component assembly in a single manufacturing process, a consistently high degree of efficiency can be achieved in the manufacturing of devices for the electronics sector. Maximum freedom in device design also relies on space being available on the PCB and the possibility of assembling different kinds of material. This is also an area which calls for SMD assembly, which is now used for both active and passive components.

SMD soldering implies space saving and design freedom. When SMD components are used, the reverse side of the PCB remains free and can be used for mounting other components. Device manufacturers have, at best, double the amount of space at their disposal in the case of a dual-sided PCB assembly – alternatively, they can use a circuit board half the size, which allows the entire device to have a more compact design. Connectivity is also possible with composite PCBs made of glass, ceramic or aluminium, a feature which plays an important role when designing devices in the area of LED lighting, for example. This often involves the installation of aluminium heat sinks, which provides no possibility for drilling holes. In such cases, SMD technology is the ideal solution for attaching the necessary connection components.

The new OMNIMATE Signal LSF-SMD product line is characterised by numerous special features and has been optimally adapted for use in multiple fields through a uniquely wide range of products. The LSF-SMD family expands the diverse product portfolio of reflow-compatible LSF-SMT components and meets all of the requirements of fully automatic PCB surface mounting for three main pitches and three wire outlet directions. In combination with its ubiquitous “PUSH IN” connection system, We are fully able to satisfy the demand for high efficiency from circuit board assembly to the installation of ready-to-use devices.

Flexible, robust and practicalLSF-SMD PCB terminals fulfil the highest standards

Vibration and shock resistance:

A simulated service life test is performed. The test spectrum includes increased broadband noise and shock in accordance with IEC 61373/10.2011 with a category 1B severity level (“body mounted”) in the 5-to-150-Hz frequency range and with an ASD level of 1.857 (m/s²)²/Hz 3 dB and an effective acceleration of 5.72 m/s² and 240 degrees of freedom (DOF). The test duration is five hours per axis. The half-sine shock wave form has a peak acceleration of 50 m/s² and a nominal duration of 30 ms.

F

5 – 150 Hz 5 G

Mechanical stability:

Stability properties are covered by normative values as well as additional practical testing. The axial torque per contact point (pole) is significantly higher than the values permitted by the standard IEC 60947-7-4. A clamping force per pole of around 150 N (40 N limit value for 1.5 mm² conductor cross-sections) in the axial direction is many times higher than the normative requirements.

Coplanarity:

To ensure reliable soldering quality in the manufacturing process, the contact surfaces of solder pins must be wetted with the solder paste immediately after assembly. This allows the flux contained within the paste to react with the Sn coating, resulting in a reliable soldering quality. The LSF-SMD has a coplanarity of up to 100 μm. We recommend a stencil thickness of 150 to 200 μm.

Conformity with standards and the consistently high level of quality of all electronic parts and components are among the key factors of success in product development, particularly in the industrial environment. Our LSF-SMD product family meets all of the requirements of PCB terminals in the industrial environment, the conditions of which are simulated in our accredited laboratory.

LSF-SMD PCB terminals were specifically designed for soldering using the SMD reflow process and are able to withstand temperatures of up to 260 °C. The terminals fulfil JEDEC requirements as regards process sensitivity (PSL) and moisture sensitivity levels (MSL) with the highest rating class. Our LSF-SMD PCB terminals also stand up to any comparison in terms of coplanarity, strength and vibration resistance. As such, they can easily be integrated into all of the current production processes.

Effectively reduce your wiring complexity in the field With our pluggable M12 power distributor SAI SVV

For supplying power in the field, for example to decentralised small drives, up to now the 24 C DC had to be wired individually via modular terminals for each component. Separately assembled decentralised distribution boxes had to be installed for this purpose in the past. This is complicated and takes up space. With our space-saving SAI-SVV power distributors, up to four components can be simply supplied via a single cable. Reduced installation times and easier service are further advantages. The SAI SVV is individually terminable using an assembly hood and has 24 V plug-in stations in accordance with the IP 67 standard - with 10 A for power and 1 A for electronics per plug-in station. Pluggable using M12 technology, easily terminable and hence time and space saving, our small SAI SVV replaces your previous distribution box. The benefits provided make it an unrivalled, unique solution for supplying power in the field.

Industrial EthernetTERMSERIES-Interface-Adapter – TIA

To reduce wiring times, pre-assembled lines are used between the controller and interface level and are simply connected to the TERMSERIES adapter. This enables electrical cabinet throughput times to be significantly reduced.

Our pre-assembled plug-and-play solution with TERMSERIES interface adapter minimises wiring complexity. The adapter has a universal fit and offers a genuine space advantage in conjunction with TERMSERIES products with identical contours.

Thanks to its symmetrical structure, the adapter can be connected to both TERMSERIES coil and contact connections. The use of positive and negative switching logic is also possible for the lower level with the aid of the potential changeover switch.

Wiring complexity is especially high for standardised series cabinets in machine construction and plant manufacture, process control technology and in shipbuilding. Wiring and throughput times can be reduced with the use of TERMSERIES interface adaptors.

Product advantages:Connection to a variety of controllers The standardised ribbon cable plug-in connections enable connection of all the interface systems pre-assembled cable types.

Reliable and unambiguous wiring Installation is unambiguous and safe thanks to practical marking of the connections, assignment of the contacts and the option of individual marking using MultiCard.

Both types of logic with one deviceThe potential switch for the lower level allows the adaptor for plus and minus switching logic to be used.

Fast supply and bridging of the auxiliary voltage Quick and safe supply of the auxiliary voltage as a result of the TOP connection with "PUSH IN" technology. Simple bridging is also possible thanks to duplication of the connections.
