Information from the President:
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year. The New
Year is 5776. How time flies. A New Year represents a new beginning for us as
Jews individually and for us as a congregation.
We welcome Rabbi Moshe Silberschein as our interim Rabbi for the next ten
months. We are fortunate as a congregation to have such a learned and
experienced rabbi as our spiritual leader.
We also will begin again to look for a permanent rabbi to pick up this torch when
Rabbi Silberschein passes it on in July of 2016. By that time I will be
your immediate past President. Over the past fifteen months or so I have come to
learn a lot about this synagogue and this congregation. We have a small, but very
dedicated staff led ably by Motti Locker. They all work very hard to keep this
congregation working and we as congregants should remember to show our
appreciation when we can because this is more than just a job to them. We also
have a group of congregants who, at no cost to the congregation, donate their
expertise. They keep us wired and keep our professional bills down. These
donations do not appear anywhere on a balance sheet but clearly keep our
expenses down and are generally unrecognized by most congregants. In addition
to the employees and the congregants who donate their work we have a substantial
core of involved, devoted and hard-working congregants. They come to minyan on
a regular basis. They visit the sick as congregational representatives. They serve
on congregational committees, often more than one. They make calls for the
congregation to investigate the best, most cost efficient way to do things. They
oversee our synagogue building, looking into potential improvements,
maintenance and ways to handle unanticipated disasters or near disasters. They
support our synagogue Backpack Buddy program. These congregants
devote countless hours to this synagogue. We should all keep this in mind when
we are asked to serve on a committee.
I look forward to the year ahead with great optimism. I hope that 5776 will
be a great year for Congregation Agudath Achim. I wish you all a Happy
New Year.

Shalom School Happenings
Shalom School
It is hard to believe another summer is over and we recently welcomed our students back to Shalom
School. As we began a new school year and are getting ready to welcome the year 5776, we feel it is
time to take stock and plan for the future. The Shalom School staff has spent time looking at what we
do and how we can make our program educational and enjoyable for our students.
Kids learn best with a multi-sensory approach; by seeing, saying, hearing, writing and doing. We are
tweaking our curriculum and lessons to ensure our students are learning in all of these ways each
week. You will hear your children talking about our new hands on learning opportunities. We have a
new committee looking at “Hands On Mitzvot” and will be providing updates on this exciting new
program for our students.
We are fortunate that Amanda Barker was able to attend the NewCAJE conference in Hartford over
the summer. Amanda brought back fresh ideas and shared them with the rest of our staff. We look
forward to taking these ideas and incorporating them in our classes.
As a staff we are committed to providing a solid foundation in Jewish Education. There is much to
learn each year. Your children learn Jewish history, holidays and traditions, blessings, Hebrew, about
Israel, how to be a responsible citizen of the world and so much more. At Shalom School we intro-
duce all of this in our Pre-K class and build on these concepts each year.
Currently our students are learning about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. For our younger students
this means making and blowing a shofar to welcome year 5776 while for the older students are re-
flecting on the past year and making atonements. We are learning about doing for others and how
knowing you are helping brings with it a good feeling.
We have taken stock, made some changes and kept some things the same. This year we would love
for our parents and any other interested community members to become involved. Please consider
volunteering to assist in the education of this next generation. If you are interested, please contact
