Fr. Terry Keehan“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul, with all your mind.” (Mark 12:30) This is Jesus’ response to the question, ‘What is the greatest com-mandment?’ I would bet that most of us consider the heart and soul part of that response

more than the mind part. In truth Jesus is asking us to love with our mind. Let’s consider just some of what that might mean. We are to engage our minds in the loving God process. We are to study and learn about God in order to be able to love more fully. We are to tap into resources of knowledge that lead us to grow education-ally in the pursuit of love. We are to learn that loving God and neighbor are really the same process. And of course it means much more than these few examples.

Our minds are a treasure of inexhaustible resources such as memory, reasoning, thinking, processing, feel-ings, emotions, reactions and more. They are also wells of deep mystery because I am sure that we all wonder sometimes why we think certain things and why thoughts seem to pop into our minds.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and Sue Geegan, Our Director of Outreach and Justice, is spear-heading some efforts here at Holy Family to heighten our awareness of mental health issues and resources. This weekend’s 9 and 11am Masses will include activi-ties and prayers that will underscore the fact that one in four Americans suffers from some form of mental health challenge or illness, many of which may not even be diagnosed and certainly not treated.

My family is shaped and certainly infl uenced by some mental health challenges, and perhaps yours is as well. Unlike many other illnesses that present themselves as obvious such as physical disabilities, mental health issues and illnesses are not as obvious. You certainly can’t often tell when or detect if someone is suffering mentally. The truth is every one of us has times of men-tal and emotional challenge that is temporary. Another challenge of mental disease is the stigma. Admitting to needing help and certainly admitting to a formal diagno-sis is not easy. I know from my family experience that even admitting the need for help is a huge hurdle. But I also know from my family and others that treatment is available and hope can be realized. Like any other disease we are fi nding out that many mental illnesses are often a combination of a genetic predisposition and environmental factors.

In addition to the awareness that we are providing here at Holy Family, you may also fi nd it helpful to go to nami.org (the site for the National Alliance for Mental Health) or Google understandingmentaldisorders.org Let us hold those who suffer from mental illness and those who care for them in our prayers. Let us also consider how we might advance the political climate in Illinois which is consistently one of the least funded states in the union for mental health programming.

Many thanks for the strong response that so many of you shared in our recent Parish Survey. We are now processing the responses and an independent fi rm is analyzing the responses which will assist us in forming a strategic plan as we move forward. The plan and re-sponses support three major areas of the plan including:1. Increased revenue2. Improved product (worship and ministry) and mes-saging3. Organizational and cost considerationsPlease look for results of the survey and details regard-ing the strategic plan as they unfold.

Our Worship offi ce is beginning a new initiative for anyone interested in writing the Prayers of The Faithful, sometimes called the Petitions or Intentions or Prayers of the People for weekend Masses. If you are a good writer and have an interest in leading our community in crafting these special prayers along with a small group of others, please contact Brian in the Worship offi ce at 847-907-3472.

We congratulate the many children who are receiving First Communion from our Parish Academy Community, Our Family Faith Community and our Christian Family Ministry Community during the next few weeks. The largest celebrations will be Masses at 10:30 on Satur-day, May 2 and Saturday, May 9. We thank the cate-chists, parents and staff who have worked so hard in the formation of our children along the sacramental journey that is such a hallmark of Catholicism. We are indeed grateful for the many passionate people who volunteer in sharing their faith with our young parishioners.

The best I can tell, there are 10 times in the scriptures when Jesus proclaims, “I am… (something)” This week’s Gospel includes one of them. “I am the vine and you are the branches…” we hear him say. Let us spend some time in prayer with that image this week. What does it mean to be a branch of the vine of Jesus Christ? One thing is that we draw life from him. Everything we do that is fruitful comes from Jesus. Let’s be fruitful in spreading the love that comes from him and the ultimate vine grower—God.

Your Questions Answered

(Part II of II)

You asked, we answer! The last couple of weekends, we have had some questions come to the Worship offi ce regarding the liturgical environment and music. We have heard many positive things and, at the same time, we have heard some “constructive criticism.” This weekly column, Worship Notes, is all about engaging the Holy Family Community in dialogue. We may not always agree, but let us fi nd common ground and remember that common ground is holy ground. The names of those who submitted the questions have been omitted. We appre-ciate the questions and the feedback.

1. Why does the director of music say "Sing Church" instead of "Sing Holy Family." Presiders say "Good Morning Holy Family." "Sing Church" sounds so Protestant.

When we profess within the creed, we say, "One holy catholic and apostolic Church…". There is certainly no problem saying Holy Family from time to time, however, the use of words are in keeping with the theological un-derstanding that we belong to a greater body than the one assembled each weekend. When we sing as a church we are joining the Church universally in its worship and adoration. Some Catholic presiders say: "Let the Church say Amen!". It is one way of engaging the assembly into the prayer, especially song, and the “full, conscious, and active participation” of the assembly that was called for by the bishops of the Second Vatican II Council.

2. The use of the electronic keyboard instead of the piano makes the music sound less prayerful.

The electric keyboard allows the utilization of strings, pads, and other piano sounds which enrich the liturgical ex-perience. Many love a great sounding acoustic instrument such as the piano we have, however, it is much more prayerful to have a tuned instrument (which the keyboard always is), versus an acoustic instrument that may be out of tune because of the infrequency of tuning. More and more churches are turning to digital piano technology because of this. On the same note (no pun intended), our piano is tuned as needed, e.g. before the Triduum and Easter season.

Check out the following articles related to the use of the electronic keyboard and its appropriateness, when used well, in Catholic worship. Music Technology in the Liturgy http://tinyurl.com/mpb9omt Electronic music ahead: Proceed with Caution http://tinyurl.com/m7xgsw5

Need a printed copy? Stop in and say “hello” in the worship offi ce, we’ll provide you a copy of the article.

HOLY FAMILY’S SPRING CLOTHING DRIVE

For St. Vincent dePaulMAY 2 and 3

Holy Family will hold its annual Spring Clothing Drive for St Vincent DePaul on Saturday, May 2 and Sun-day, May 3. We are suggesting that you bring your donations of spring and summer clothing to the truck located in the parking lot before or after mass (except the Sunday 4pm mass). There will be volunteers there to take your donations and put them directly on the truck. Tax receipts will be available. PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANY DONATIONS TO THE CHURCH PRIOR TO SATURDAY, MAY 2. WE HAVE NO STORAGE SPACE AVAILABLE. Please contact Mary-Frances at [email protected] if you would like to help or have questions.

Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s DayArchibishop Blase Cupich asks for your support

“It is my great hope that we can all come together this Mother’s Day to share the love of Christ with our brothers and sisters who desperately need our help. Many thanks for considering a gift to Catholic Charities. During these fi nal weeks of the Easter Season, you have my prayers for God’s abundant blessing for you and your families.” Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich

After spending years in a Nepali refugee camp, the Jha family arrived here with nothing. Catholic Charities met them at the airport and took them in hand, helping them learn Eng-lish, fi nd work, enroll in school, and get medical care. They were among the 469 refugees we resettled last year. Every 30 seconds someone turns to Catholic Charities for help. When you give to Catholic Charities, you ensure that one less mother has to worry about feeding her chil-dren tonight. That one less person will make a bench their bed tonight. That one less veteran will go without a job. $.92 of every dollar you give goes directly to help someone in need. Please give to Catholic Charities on Mother’s Day to help refugees build a new and hopeful life. Learn more at www.catholiccharities.net.

Prayer List Requests Remembering our sick in prayer is important to the Holy Family parish community. With the person’s or relative’s per-mission, his or her name will be read aloud during the inter-cessory prayers that weekend. We will then place the name of a sick person who has recently become ill on the screens at the weekend Masses for the following two weeks. Should the person become more seriously ill at a future time, let us know and we will then follow the same procedure. ALL the sick of our parish community and our relatives and friends who are ill can we added to our Book of Prayer in the narthex and then prayed for each and every day at Masses and by the prayer groups in our parish.

The Pastoral CareCommunity...provides, through our ministries, compassionate pastoral care with support and guidance for those who suff er in mind, body and spirit.

The HOME MINISTRY team would like to keep people in our com-munity aware of the services we offer. We are available for the occasional wellness check, need for transporta-tion, visit or help with a meal. Our members are all volunteers and we are always interested in those who might join in this ministry or members of our community who may be aware of a need we might be able to fi ll. If you would like to be involved in this ministry or know of a need call us at 847-772-2646. Thanks to all those who have vol-unteered to serve.

In a Special Way We Pray For...

Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetua light shine upon them.

May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.

Holy Family Parish is pleased to offer a preventive health event. Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings on June 22, 2015. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a rup-tured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fi brillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis.

Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vas-cular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All fi ve screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners.

Memory Book

On a stand near the chapel doors rests the Memo-ry Book of our parish. It contains the prayer cards of those whose funerals have been celebrated at Holy Family. There is also a section for the prayer cards of those who are dear to us but whose fu-nerals were celebrated elsewhere.

If you have loved ones whose prayer cards are not in the memory book, please put a prayer card in an envelope, address it to Matt Thibeau and drop it off at the parish offi ce.

We are especially looking for prayers cards from services celebrated at Holy Family during the past two years and in the early years of the parish.

Last weekend we unveiled plans for improvements to our narthex gathering space. This project is funded entirely by The Our Families, Our Faith, Our Future campaign contributions. Thank you to the generous donors who pledged their support when we began our capital campaign over three years ago.

As pledges continue to be paid, we are committed to completing projects as originally outlined at the beginning of the capital campaign. The scope of the campaign plan includes the enhancing and reworking of the narthex to make it more welcoming and functional. The narthex is the center of a multitude of social and spiritual programs and activities. The planned improvements include areas for ministry promotion and volunteer engagement, hospitality, storage, welcoming, and small and large social gatherings.

We especially thank our narthex planning committee. These skilled volunteers donated many hours of their time and expertise in the areas of construction, architecture and interior design. Also thank you to the members of our parish Building Committee and Finance Council whose oversight ensured the quality and efficiency of this project.

If you did not have a chance to view details of the improvements last weekend and are interested in learning more, or if you would like to make a donation to the campaign, please contact Heidi Rooney [email protected].

We anticipate that the narthex will be completed for your enjoyment by mid June.
