St. John the Evangelist
Author Dan Brown certainly gathered a lot of attention in his book “The DaVinci Code” which was primarily a mystery about religious symbolism and famous art work. We all followed closely as Mr. Brown wove a tall tale of intrigue about the symbolism in the Catholic Church. Who can forget his de-scription of the Last Supper, and the apparently empty space between Jesus and John as John rested his head on Jesus’ shoulder.
We know that John was the favorite apostle of Jesus due to John’s undying loyalty, friendship and love. We know that John was the only one of the apostles that stood at the foot of the cross, all others having forsaken Jesus. We know that Jesus awarded that loyalty by telling him to take care of His mother who was also there. John was there not only at His death, but was the very first apostle to see the empty tomb.
In St. Mary’s Church at the left side of the nave, we find the stained glass window of St. John. John is depicted as always, a young man sporting no facial hair. John is clad in a blue cloak, symbolizing his de-votion to Mary the mother of Jesus. John is carrying a book, probably to Book of Revelation which he is said to have written in Patmos after Mary’s death. He also wears a medallion of the sun symbolizing truth which reveals itself in light, rather than darkness. At the bottom of the stained glass window ap-pear three symbols. Reading from the left, again a scroll appears, probably his gospel. In the center again is the sun, with the eye of God, seeing all. The third smaller window is a feather, again a symbol-ism of John’s writing.
Flanking John, to the right and left, waist high, you will see John’s symbol, the eagle. The eagle repre-sents the heights to which rose in his gospel.
At the very top of the stained glass window you will see the chalice and the host perhaps in reference to John and Peter having been sent by Jesus to gather the items for the Passover ultimately becoming the needed items for the breaking of bread and drinking of the wine. John was granted a very long life and died in the year 98, having lived 92 years on this earth, a rarity at that time.
Interestingly, this window was donated by the Murray family. When the last of the Murray’s died child-less, they also donated their home to the Church. I think they chose to donate the window of St. John, because they were obviously true and loyal friends of our Catholic community. Their home still stands on Williams Street, and is now owned by Dr. Al McKee and his wife, the President of the Longmeadow Historical Society. ~ Marybeth Bergeron

Theology 101: The Church as Bride – Part 8
Most of us see the Crucifixion of Jesus as a great injustice; an innocent man killed for his beliefs, a martyrdom. We Christians also see it as a sacrifice for all humanity. But in what sense is it a wedding? First, Jesus spoke of himself as a bridegroom asked why his disciples did not fast. “Can the wedding guests (sons of the bridechamber) fast when the bridegroom is with them? but when the bridegroom is taken from them, then they will fast.” In order to understand this it's important to know how weddings were celebrated in ancient Israel. First, they resembled a week-long party, where everyone concerned suspended daily ac-tivities. Second, Jesus identifies his disciples as “sons of the bridechamber” (may translations say “wedding guests”). The “sons of the bridechamber” in rabbinical literature referred to male friends of the groom who actually prepared the bridechamber. The rabbis of Je-sus' time held that the bridegroom, the best man and the “sons of the bridechamber” did not have to per-form the usual obligations of Jewish men during the week – long wedding. So for the disciples not to fast was a prophetic sign that the long-awaited bridegroom of Israel was finally here. Third, the climax of the wed-ding was when the bridegroom and the bride entered the bridechamber and the marriage was consummat-ed. At that point the best man and the “sons of the bridechamber” would pretend to mourn because their friend now belonged with his bride. So when Jesus gives his answer to the Phari-sees, he is explicitly calling to their attention a Jewish wedding, and predicting that his disciples will fast in the future when “the bridegroom is taken from them” – that is, when he dies. Another point: The bridechamber was a struc-ture erected just for the groom and the bride. In Jew-ish weddings today the couple stands under a “huppah” which recalls that tradition. The bridecham-ber was modeled after the Tabernacle that accompa-nied the Israelites in the desert, the exact description of which is in Exodus. When Moses “married” the Is-raelites to God, blood was sprinkled on the people and on the tabernacle. Jesus is saying that his “marriage” will be consummated on the cross with his blood. Saint Augustine, among others, preached this very in-terpretation: “Like a bridegroom Christ went forth from his nuptial chamber…He came even to the mar-riage-bed of the cross, and there, ascending it, he con-summated a marriage.” Finally, in this parable Jesus equates himself with God, the Bridegroom of Israel, as attested by many of the prophets, especially Hosiah. Pope Bene-dict said “In Him, in an unexpected way, God and man become one, become a marriage...”.

Dear Parishioners, As I announced at Mass a few weeks ago, this summer I need to schedule some minor surgery on my right hand. I am one of those people who suffer from carpal tunnel and lately shaking hands is very painful. As you know, I normally stand outside after Mass and shake hands as people leave the church. Please understand if I don’t extend my hand in the coming weeks or if I extend my left hand. It’s not you - - - it’s me!
