1 July 2019 Congratulations to Bob Dodgson for being Inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame! On June 8, 2019 Bob was officially inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame at the AMA District XI Jamboree at the Red Apple Flyers flying field in Wenatchee, WA. Bob shown here receiving the award from AMA President Rich Hanson. For those attending this presentation, it was like Old Home Week, or a Reunion of past Dodgson Designs glider flyers. There were folks from Oregon, Seattle, Southern California, Spokane (I probably missed a couple) there to celebrate Bob receiving the award. There was a great turnout of well-wishers for Bob. Hall of Fame! On June 8, 2019 Bob was officially inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame at the AMA District XI Jamboree at the Red Apple
Flyers flying field in Wenatchee, WA.

For those attending this presentation, it was like Old Home Week, or a Reunion of past Dodgson Designs glider flyers. There were folks
from Oregon, Seattle, Southern California, Spokane (I probably missed a couple) there to celebrate Bob receiving the award. There was a
great turnout of well-wishers for Bob.
Here are some pictures from the jamboree.

Dodgson Design Glider Flyers at the Jamboree (How many can you identify?)
Other stuff. Sandie and I, along with a large group of NWSS glider guiders and other out of state flyers made it
to Wenatchee for the 1st Annual AMA District XI Jamboree. It was special this year as Bob Dodgson of the
famous Dodgson Designs Gliders received the award from AMA for being inducted into the AMA Hall of
Fame. I know that many of us in the NWSS have built and flown Bob’s designs. Sandie and I had the 2-meter
Pixie, the Camino, the Windsong and later the Anthem, they were great flying gliders at that time. Bob, before
there was electronic programing of flight controls, came up with some unique mechanical design features that
we now do without a lot of thought, but then it was great to have “Crow” and “elevator/flap compensation” for
landing, to name a couple.
I have to say that the Red Apple Flyers there in Wenatchee have a great flying field, and the weather was good.
There was a lot of flying devoted to nitro and gas airplanes/Helicopters etc., but very little to gliders. The event
director, after Bob’s award, said that gliders could fly for the next hour. How nice of them. 😊
On the other side of the coin, for the first Jamboree, the folks at the Red Apple Flyers and other AMA District
XI members, did do a good job of putting it on.
Another reminder!!
Nominations for the Cliff Mink Service Award and NWSS Board of Directors are open. The Cliff Mink
Service Award is named after one of the founding fathers of the NWSS, Mr. Cliff Mink. This award is
presented annually to an individual(s) who has made a significant contribution promoting soaring in the
Northwest. The Cliff Mink Service award has been around the NWSS for several years and was 1st given to
Cliff at the 1985 tournament.
The three board members whose 3-year term is up this year are, Richard Van Dijk, Ken Eaton and Tom
Clumsee. The board term is for 3 years. So, if you would like to serve on the NWSS board or know someone
who would like to, please feel free to nominate yourself or the person for the NWSS board. If you nominate
someone, please make sure that that person is willing to serve. For the Cliff Mink Service Award and the
NWSS Board nominations please send you nomination to NWSS Secretary Art Boysen, email:
[email protected]. Thanks, this month to Rex Grace for Season Points update and his Cross-country Article
