Shomrei Torah Parshat Chukat

10 Tammuz, 5778 / June 23, 2018

HAKARAT HaTOV Ba’alei Kriah Upstairs - Aaron Pavel, Eli Pavel, Ari Sher, David Robin, Gideon Bannett.

Ba’al Kriah Downstairs - Ari Mayefsky

PACHIM KETANIM FROM RABBI YUDIN: In Honor of Parshat Chukat and Why Some Fast Today Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim (580:2) the Magen Avrohom teaches that today, erev Shabbat, Parshas Chukat, is marked on our calendar - not the specific day in Tammuz, but the Friday before Parshas Chukas - as a day that righteous Jews fasted. On this day in 1242, twenty-four wagon loads of holy books: Talmud, Jewish law, Agadah and other holy sefarim were burnt. Keep in mind, this was before the printing press and thus a horrific blow to the morale of the Jewish people and the opportunity for Torah study. Why this particu-lar day? The Parsha begins, "Zos chukas haTorah," and the Targum (Aramaic translation) is, “This is, geziras oraisa. This has a double meaning: 1. The law of the Torah; 2. the tearing/destruction of Torah. Note the power of our written Torah to predict and dictate this tragedy in advance. This “advance notice” is beyond our scope of understanding, since the very name of the parsha itself denotes a law which has no rational mean-ing; but when the Zohar writes, "He looked into the Torah and created the world," i.e. the Torah is the blue-print of the world, this is to be taken literally.

NOTICE: CHILDREN AND SHUL LOCKBOX

Some children are still placing (food) garbage in the shul lockbox, despite a previous bulletin notice and a notice on the lockbox itself. The lockbox is accessed by a slot to the left of the shul office door. This is vandalism that has in many cases damaged checks which need to be deposited in the bank, in addition to making the job of the volunteers who deal with this function unnecessarily difficult. It’s very important that you watch and help ensure that children do not place garbage of any kind in that slot. Thank you.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS This week the children enjoyed our pre-summer funfilled kaytana with Morah Kaila, Morah Regina and our special helpers, Morah Barbara, Morah Sarah, Emma and Gedaliah. They had a fun filled sensory week. They baked, paint-ed and played with paper mache. We made colorful milk bubbles and even made our own Shabbat party treats! The children enjoyed making sculptures out of clay and a gooey, sticky bubble solution while playing on the play-ground. Hunting for treasures in shaving cream was loads of fun with lots of surprises too! Of course, we enjoyed water fun in the sprinklers and all of the new stories, songs and dances we learned this week. Next week is the official start of our summer program with Morah Etty, Morah Regina, Morah Shayna and Yoni. Michael will be joining us twice a week for sports and Morah Kaila will be back for yoga and movement. There is still room for you to join us by e-mailing [email protected]. Shabbat Shalom!
