What's So Great About Being Catholic? There’s ultimately only one reason to be Catholic: because it’s true. In this outstanding presentation, Jason Evert shows us the beauty and the treasures of the Faith, as revealed through the Saints and Sacraments. Parishioner Comments This is a powerful presentation that not only reminds us why we are catholic, but it also provides ways we

can explain it to others who may ask us why! I can not think of anyone that should NOT listen to this talk!

580-St. Cecilia

My dear parishioners, On this, the Lord’s Day we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of the Lord commonly called CORPUS CHRISTI. In the Gospel reading for today we are told the story of the Last Supper, the first Mass which the Lord Jesus celebrated with His Apostles. He commanded them to continue to

do this ritual in memory of Him. The Church has been faithful to this divine directive from that day to today. The celebration of the Eucharist is the means by which we become united with our Pre-cious Lord and Savior. He becomes the holy food by which we are nourished and strengthened spiritually. It also becomes the means by which we are united with one another and form a community of faith. As a parish we are a community of faith and this community is visible when we gather to celebrate the Holy Mass, as Jesus told us to do. Our weekly attendance at the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist shows our obedience to Jesus’ will and our honoring the Third Commandment. Weekly Mass attendance is even required of us as we enter into the summer vacation season. We are reminded that missing Holy Mass, except for sickness or impossibility for Mass, is a mortal sin and places us OUTSIDE a state of grace. This condition necessitates the need for reconciliation through the sacrament of penance. Excusing ourselves from the Sunday assembly is very serious. Our faith community is also manifested when we gather after the Eucharist to enjoy one another’s company. The members of the Early Church always met for such gatherings which they referred to as “agape.” These fraternal gatherings did much to strengthen their love and concern for one another. By spending time with one another they were able to encourage, console and reassure one another in Christ. These “after Mass gatherings” were most beneficial for believers and built up the community of faith. I hope we will take advantage of the wonderful opportunity we will have NEXT SUNDAY as we gather for our ANNUAL PAR-ISH PICNIC FOR ST. CECILIA & SACRED HEART OF JESUS which will take place at the Firemen’s Field on Beech Street in the Borough from 1 to 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Please come and bring the whole family. A variety of food will be available (inexpensive too!), games, music and wonderful FELLOWSHIP – AGAPE! Bring a lawn chair and should the weather be in-clement we will meet in Hayes Hall (St. Cecilia Church) – so we are on - rain or shine! Most of us lead busy lives which does not give us much time to spend together. We are always running and barely have time to say “hello.” What a great opportunity next Sunday to actually spend some time talking with one another. I know I’m looking forward to it and I hope you are too! A gathering such as this makes our two parishes stronger and brings with it many benefits which build up the body of Christ. I’m going to be looking for YOU! God bless you,

Fr. Zig

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA, Priest and Doctor of the Church June 13 — Patron of the Poor

St. Anthony, called “St. Anthony of Padua” on account of his long residence in that city, was a native of Lisbon in Por-tugal, where he was born in 1195, receiving the name of Ferdinand at his Baptism. At. An early age his parents placed him in the community of the canons of the Cathedral of Lisbon, by whom he was educated. At fifteen he entered the Order of Regular Cannons of St. Augustine near Lisbon. After two years he was sent to the convent of the Holy Cross of the same Order at Coimbra. He had lived in this house eight years, intent on his studies, when the relics of five Franciscan martyrs were brought from Morocco to Portugal. This event inspired him to follow in the footsteps of these heroes of the Faith. When his became known his brethren offered extreme opposition, but he finally obtained the consent of the prior and passed over to the Franciscan Order. After some time he obtained leave to go to Africa to preach to the Moors, but a severe illness obliged him to return to Spain. However, the vessel was driven to Sicily by contrary winds , and the desire to see St. Francis took him to Assisi, where a general chapter of the Or-der was in progress. At first, he was entirely ignored in the Order, and he purposely kept himself in obscurity; but Providence soon re-vealed to the Franciscans what a treasure they had acquired and St. Anthony was made professor of theology, which subject he later taught successively at Bologna, Toulouse, Montpellier and Padua. He gave me teach to devote himself to preaching, for he was an accomplished orator, being at the same time filled with zeal for souls. In this work he traveled through France, Spain, and Italy. He was invested with several important dignities in his Order and labored hard to preserve monastic discipline, boldly opposing the famous General Elias, who sought to introduce relaxations. He died June 13, 1231, and was canonized the following year by Pope Gregory IX. PRAYER: Almighty, ever-living God, You gave Your people the extraordinary preacher St. Anthony and made him an intercessor in difficulties. By his aid grant that we may live a truly Christian life and experience Your help in all adversities. Amen Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey
