Congratulations, Anna Krips! Our Employee of the Month

Anna Krips, Residential Aide in Carriage house, is actively involved with the care of the individuals and the day to day operations of the homes. Anna demonstrates a high level of compassion to the clients and is able to manage any challenges that might occur. She is very flexible when reassigned to a different location and always maintains a positive attitude.

During team meetings, she offers input, suggestions and solutions to ensure that all protocols and practices are followed consistently. She is the first to take the lead

on solving a problem or implementing any new practices to support the residents in the best way possible. She welcomes new hires with open arms and a positive demeanor. Anna is described as a calm, knowledgeable employee and has earned the respect of her peers. They seek advice and guidance from Anna when confronted with difficult situations and they appreciate her feedback.

We are truly thankful to Anna for the dedicated service to the individuals and to the organization.

She is a past Rotary President and current Board Member of the Newtown Square Rotary. Recognition for Service to the Community

Autumn is a time we celebrate transitions, from the changing leaves to the cooler weather. While many of us are prepared for these changes, it is important to pay particular attention to the children and adults entrusted to our care at Melmark.

Many may not think of putting on a light jacket before heading into the morning chill while some may overdress for the cooler weather and get too warm during the day. It is up to each staff member to make sure children and adults are prepared for the fluctuating temperatures marking this time of year.

In addition to the changing weather, we are experiencing other transitions at Melmark. With Dr. Donovan’s announcement surrounding her retirement plans, Melmark’s Board of Directors is

interviewing candidates for Melmark’s next CEO. I am proud to work alongside Dr. Donovan, serving as Melmark’s Interim Deputy CEO, during the transition and while the board works tirelessly to find the perfect person for the job. As you have read in communications from the board, Dr. Donovan will remain on as President through December 31, 2016.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to continue doing your best each day to support the people we are privileged to serve. I greatly appreciate the dedication you bring to your work each day, as you put the care of the children and adults at Melmark at the very top of your priority list. I am dedicated to providing the positive, supportive influence each of you needs to carry out your responsibilities to the very best of your abilities.

The Joybells Perform at 2015 World Meeting of FamiliesOn Sunday, September 27, The Joybells of Melmark made their debut on the world’s stage, performing during The World Meeting of Families’ celebration along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. The Joybells opened Sunday’s celebrations leading up to the Papal Mass. Millions of people watched from the crowded parkway as The Joybells performed “Holy, Holy, Holy” and “Joyful, Joyful” on the main stage at Eakins Oval. Millions more saw the performance on live television and recorded broadcasts around the world.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the musicians who are part of The Joybells. They practiced for months before the performance and shared in our entire community’s excitement during the days leading up to the event. Mel-mark Director of Adult Day Programs, Liza Jones, shared in the joy surrounding the opportunity. “I am just so proud of The Joybells,” said Jones. “They are a true testament to the fact that every single person has a talent to share with the world. The World Meeting of Families’ theme this year is ‘Love Is Our Mission’, and I cannot imagine a better way to demonstrate our mission at Melmark than through the love each Joybells member puts into their musical abilities. During their performance, The Joybells taught the world that love and oppor-tunity are all anyone needs to make a difference in this world.”

Heritage FestivalOn Friday, September 18, we celebrated the diversity that makes Melmark such an amazing place to work and live. Melmark’s Annual International Heritage Day Festival featured a parade, in which staff and clients carried flags from their native countries. The festival also included a complimentary buffet lunch of international foods served by members of Melmark’s Leadership Team, as well as games and activities.

Jackie Turner, Director of Children’s 6400 Residential, has provided over ten years of dedicated service to Melmark. Jackie began working as direct care staff in Miller house and quickly worked her way up to Lead Staff, Program Manager, Residential Behavior Analyst, Assistant Director and up to her current role. Jackie has a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge that she uses to mentor the managers of the houses she oversees. The managers always feel supported by her and feel that she is “in their corner” regardless of the situation.

Jackie spends many extra hours to ensure her program has all of the necessary resources in place to be successful. There is no job too big or too small for her, and she always takes a close look at every suggestion or decision to make sure it is in the best interest of the program. Not only does Jackie dedicate herself to her staff, she also goes above and beyond for the individuals and families served in the homes. She will pitch in any way she can and is always a phone call away.

Regardless of the changes that occur around her, Jackie is the model for consistency and has earned the respect of her colleagues, staff and Leadership team members. We truly appreciate everything Jackie does and congratulate her on this tremendous achievement.

While our main focus is always on our client’s successes, it is important not to overlook the staff success stories that make Melmark a unique place to work. This month, we’d like to share Beth Briggs-Varallo’s story.

Beth joined the Melmark team in 2009 as a classroom teacher. Known to her colleagues, students and their families as a reliable and caring resource, Beth im-mediately stood out as a leader, not only in her classroom, but within the entire Education Department. She was promoted to a senior teacher role, in which she mentored newly hired teachers for an entire school year. In this position, Beth also helped her mentees prepare Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) as well as teaching plans. Her support helped ensure success for both staff and students at Melmark. Beth was recognized as Melmark’s Supervisor of the Year during her tenure as a Senior Teacher.

In 2015, Beth earned a promotion to a curriculum coordinator position at Melmark. In this role, Beth oversees staff in both academic and residential settings. She also develops Individualized Service Plans (ISPs) and serves as an IEP representative for Melmark, making key decisions on technology needs in the classroom, finding answers to funding questions and guiding her colleagues through the often difficult to navigate ID support system.

Beth’s future goals include continuing to advance her career at Melmark and building upon her already solideducational background, which includes a Masters in Education. Melmark is extremely fortunate to have Beth on its team, and we are happy to support her continued success and growth in the field of special education and Applied Behavior Analysis.

Ditch the Workout, Join the Party!Melmark is offering a series of ten-week Zumba classes. These classes are great for everyone, from beginner to expert, and require no prior experience or coordination.

What: Zumba! is a fun, Latin-inspired dance fitness workout.

Michael Donovan Manager of Operations and Strategic Initiatives

Advocacy CornerOn Wednesday, September 23, the Moving Agencies Toward Excellence (MAX) Association hosted Deputy Secretary of the Office of Developmental Programs, Nancy Thaler. Ms. Thaler was appointed to that role by Secretary of Human Services, Ted Dallas, in June. It is her second go-round in this position (which was called OMR at that time). Her first term in the role was from 1993-2003. She has since been working in Washington, D.C., first at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, then as Executive Director of National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disability Services.

Ms. Thaler returns to the job with renewed energy with the goal of repairing a broken system. She spoke about the numerous challenges that face the Commonwealth and shared her ideas with the group, a collection of professionals from various providers like Melmark.

As Chair of the MAX Advocacy and Policy Committee (MAP), I had the opportunity to organize our questions for Ms. Thaler ahead of the meeting. A different MAP committee member asked her about a variety of topics including redundancy of oversight in our system (adding administrative burden to providers), the lack of availability of medication administrator certification courses, and a forum for feedback from families about the implementation of the Community Final Rule.

She was gracious and generous with her time. While some may disagree with her on specific issues, there is widespread respect for her efforts at both the state and federal level on behalf of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Losers R Winners Weight Loss Challenge Thanks for those that participated in The Losers R Winners Weight Loss Challenge!

We had 62 participants, and 36 people met their goal (58%). The most weight lost was 10.2 pounds, and the average weight lost was 6.8 lbs. The 36 people who met their goal earned 50 healthy lifestyle points. Points can be used for a discount on next year’s insurance premiums:

We are excited to have launched another Walking Works Challenge, which began Sunday, August 16 and runs through Saturday, November 14th. This is a 12-week challenge to see how many miles teams (four to eight people per team) can walk by the end of the program.

This is another opportunity to earn Healthy Lifestyle Tracker points, which can add up to savings on next year’s health insurance premium! In addition to earning points, there will be prizes for the team with the highest average miles walked over the 12-week challenge and a prize for the person with the overall highest total number of miles walked. Currently there are 77 employees participating in Walking Works.

Employees who participated in the Losers R Winners Weight Loss Challenge! can also earn 35 healthy lifestyle points if they get a flu shot.

Melmark will be starting a recreational basketball league this fall on Thursday evenings from 4:00 – 6:00 PM in the Gym!

Teams will consist of three staff on each team, and games will be played on a three versus three basis. Games will take place in half hour intervals.

Interested employees must form a team of three staff members and submit their team registration and exercise release forms to the HR Office by October 9th.

Game schedules will be distributed to league participants on October 16th, and the basketball league will officially begin on Thursday, October 22nd.

Campaign Passes $11 million in Pledges and GiftsMany people see autumn as a time of renewal and reorganization, a time when one can make resolutions to reenergize, move forward and set and meet new goals. Happily, the beginning of fall has prompted a surge of new commitments to Promises to Keep…The Campaign for Melmark. Thanks to a number of very generous gifts and pledges received in the first week in September, we are thrilled to report that we have exceeded $11 million to support the various initiatives of the Campaign. Also, we have almost $7.8 million in fulfillment of commitments and are waiting on over $10 million in requests pending. It is our hope that as we move further into the fall, we will see a renewed commitment from many of our constituents, first, to be open to learn more about the Campaign’s initiatives and, second, to consider ways to partner with Melmark in this great venture.

Among the donors to the Campaign, the most generous are our families who have provided over 62% of our total commitments. This makes perfect sense as it is the parents, siblings, grandparents and other extended family members who are the most vested in Melmark’s future. That said, it will take everyone’s interest and support to bring us to our goal. In the coming months the Advancement Office will be meeting with many of our families to report progress on the projects underway and the details of those planned.

The Promises to Keep Campaign represents one of the most important initiatives Melmark has embarked on in its nearly 50 years. The Campaign’s complete success in reaching or exceeding the $20 million goal is our only option. The children and adults we serve deserve it.

With new parking areas open, the construction focus on Melmark’s campus turns to curbing and road surfaces. Crews will be installing curbing in the following areas in the coming weeks:

This is a reminder that our Fall Clean Up Days are scheduled for:

On clean up days, supervisors should oversee and assist with the following:1. Discarding items which are no longer used and which have no value2. Gathering items which are no longer used but could be donated (outgrown clothing, unused toys, etc)3. Identifying and gathering items for which off site storage is appropriate (furniture and other larger items

which are in good repair but are no longer needed in the home or work location)

Items which are no longer needed in homes or work locations should be gathered and labeled into three categories:

1. Trash2. Donations3. Off site storage

Items should be left on front lawns of the homes (or in front area of work unit/dept.) by as early as possible but no later than 3:00 p.m. on the dates listed above.

In addition, supervisors should ensure the following• All storage space is clean and organized. • Items should be neatly stacked, folded, etc. Loose items should be stored in bins or other appropriate

storage containers. • All stored items can be easily reached and accessed. • All client possessions must be separated by individual.• Nothing should be stored in utility closets or in front of fire sprinklers, electrical panels or other building

safety equipment or utilities. • Nothing should be stored within 18 inches of the ceiling.

This includes storage in closets. • All means of egress including stairs, hallways and pathways

to exits, as outlined in building evacuation plans, must be clear. There should not be chairs, boxes, carts or other items stored in these areas.

Fall Cleanup Days

Thanks to our partnership with Art-Reach, adults in Melmark’s Day Programs recently had the opportunity to visit the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA). They enjoyed privately guided tours through exhibits where they saw unique artwork on display. Art-Reach enriches lives by connecting under served audiences with cul-tural experiences so that they may enjoy and benefit from the power of the arts.

Thanks to Brandon, Patrick and Tee for presenting a beautiful piece of art to Melmark’s vocational program. The three made this artwork together at In-Sync and Social meetings over the course of four weeks. In-Sync and Social is a social skills program that encourages teamwork and teaches valuable social nuances to children, adolescents and adults.

Helping the Homeless

Talk about giving back to the community! Tee and Patrick are holding a donation drive for the Safe Harbor Shelter of Chester County. Please help out those in need with any NEW clothing, cleaning supplies, household items or unopened, non-perishable food items.

Safe Harbor is a non-profit charitable organization that provides shelter, food and access to support services for homeless single men and homeless single women in Chester County.

The collection lasts through the end of October. Please see the next page for a full list of items to donate.

Tee’s Halloween Popcorn BallsPopcorn Balls are the perfect Halloween treat! You won’t believe how easy it is to make popcorn balls using melted marshmallows, popcorn and any candy of your choice. Be sure to press the balls together firmly, so that they won’t fall apart

Ingredients

• Vegetable cooking spray• 3 tablespoons vegetable oil• l/3 cup popcorn kernels• 3 tablespoons butter• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract• 6 cups (12-ounces) mini marshmallows• 6 fun-size caramel peanut chocolate bars (such as Snickers), cut into l/4-inch pieces• 3 (3-inch) chocolate chip cookies, crumbled• 1/3 cup chopped salted almonds,• 1/2 cup orange and black chocolate candies (such as M and Ms)

Directions

• Spray the inside of a large mixing bowl with vegetable cooking spray, and lightly spray a baking sheet. Set aside.

• In a 3 quart or larger, heavy-bottomed pan, heat the oil and popcorn over medium-high heat.• Cover the pan and shake gently. Cook until all the kernels have popped, about 3 minutes. Place the popcorn

in the prepared bowl.• In a medium saucepan, heat the butter over low heat. Add the vanilla extract and marshmallows.• Stir constantly until the marshmallows have melted and the mixture is smooth, about 5 minutes.• Pour the melted marshmallow mixture over the popcorn. Using a spatula, sprayed with cooking spray, stir un-

til the popcorn is coated. Spread the mixture over the prepared baking sheet.

• Sprinkle with the chocolate bar pieces, cookies, almonds and chocolate candies.

• Using a spatula, gently press the toppings into the popcorn.

• Allow the mixture to dry for 1 hour.• Break into 2-inch pieces and store airtight in a

plastic container.• Serving Suggestion: Place in small plastic bags and

seal with colored ribbon.
