Harrison County 4-H’ers Show at Ak-Sar-Ben Expo
Remember that 4-H has a state program development
fee of $30 for each 4-H’er. Harrison County Extension
will pay $15 of that fee (from apple pie/muffin auction
monies) leaving $15 due from each 4-H’er.
There are some scholarships available, but you must
call the office for more information. Clover Kids, Discov-
ering 4-H’ers, and first year members do not pay the
$30 fee.
A Drum Roll for the Clover Award The Clover Award goes to the outgoing County 4-H Council members. The Council worked well together carrying out many activities and had many good times. It was a pleasure for me to work with this talented group of individuals.
I hope each of them has many memories about their council experiences and that they keep working to pro-mote 4-H. Thank you to the 2016-2017 County 4-H Council for an active, fun-filled year! Outgoing members include: Austin Adair, Kaitlynn Barksdale, Emma Dahir, Brianna Darnell, Samantha Harman, Shelby Kurth, Bailey Scha-ben, Owen Smith and Faith Spencer.
Five Harrison County 4-H members participated in the an-
nual Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Stock Show held September 28 through
October 1 at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds,
Fonner Park, Grand Island. Harrison County 4-H
members exhibited in breeding beef, market beef,
feeder calf, and market broiler contests.
Grant Brix, Logan, Magnolia Hillbillies 4-H
Club, showed a breeding heifer and received a
blue ribbon. He also received a blue ribbon for
breeding beef showmanship. Mason Shearer,
Mondamin, Loess Hills Lancers 4-H Club showed
a market beef and received a blue ribbon. Brylee
Sherer, Pisgah, Loess Hills Lancers 4-H Club re-

market broilers, a blue ribbon for her market
beef, a blue ribbon for a feeder calf and a blue in

Animal Science Round-Up
Don’t forget that all 4-H mem-bers in grades 4-12 are required to be FSQA certified if they are show-ing/selling beef, sheep, swine, poultry, dairy, goats, or rabbits at the fair. Members who are in grades 4-6 must attend a FSQA workshop each year to be certified. Certifica-tions for workshops expire each year. Members who are in grades 7-12 may attend a training or take a test. The ‘intermediate’ test for stu-dents in grades 7-9 must be
passed with a 70%. Members who pass the ‘intermediate’ test are certified until they reach grade 10. Members who are in grades 10-12 must take the ‘advanced’ test. If they pass with a 70% they are cer-tified until they are turn 20. FSQA requirements must be completed prior to July 1. 4-Her’s also need to be aware of the COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) requirements. For de-tailed information on this, go to http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/livestock .
If you are interested in attending Animal Science
Round-Up, June 26-28, you will need to apply to at-
tend by March 1. They only take a limited number of
people for each species. Species available are beef,
poultry, sheep and swine. If you want more infor-
mation, call the Extension Office at 712-644-2105.
4-Her’s also need to be aware
of the COOL (Country of Origin
Labeling) requirements.

Livestock Project Worksheets Available
Meat animal and breeding animal project record forms are available at the office. If you want to use these forms in
your record keeping, stop in and get what you need, or give us a call.
Remember that Harrison County 4-H re-enrollments are now done online. More infor-mation on how to proceed is available at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/4honline-information-families-and-leaders . The actual 4H Online website is located at https://iowa.4honline.com/ . You and your parents will also complete the medical infor-mation and the youth code of conduct on-line. Remember that we cannot activate your re-enrollment until we have your medical information release and the youth code of conduct completed online (or with completed, signed paper copies on file at the Extension Office). If you do not have a family email account, you will need to contact the Extension Office for as-sistance. 4-H’ers should be re-enrolled in the 4hOnline system by December 1 (particularly those en-rolled in the beef project). If you are not enrolled by then, your weigh-in information can-not be processed. Please pay particular attention to birthdates and grades when completing your forms. If you give us incorrect data, you may miss out on information pertaining to your age group or grade, because the computer often uses your grade for sorting. If your family is in the system, but has a new 4-H family member joining this year, that youth may be added online, however, new, first-time 4-H families will need to enroll with a paper form for their first year and Extension office staff will enter the information online. New 4-H’ers can continue to enroll until May 1 and be eligible to exhibit at county fair. Remember that there is a state 4-H program development fee of $30 for each 4-H'er in grades 4 through 12. Check with your club to see how they are handling this fee. Harrison County Extension will pay $15 of that fee (from apple pie/muffin auction monies) leaving $15 due from each 4-H'er. There are some additional scholarships available. Call the office for more information. Clover Kids (K through 2nd grade) and Discovering 4-H’ers (3rd grade) do not pay the $30 fee. First time 4-H members do not pay the fee their first year, either. 4-H’ers with an active military parent also do not need to pay the fee.
Questions? Call the Extension Office at 712-644-2105 or stop in and talk to us.

Increase Community Service in Your Club
Good citizenship in practice is
understanding, appreciating, and
doing things that make life better for
others in your community. Here are
some ideas for helping your commu-
nity.
Recognize veterans in your
community.
• Trim a Christmas tree with mit-
tens and stocking hats and do-
nate them to local schools,
homeless shelters, or a clothing
pantry.
Rake leaves, shovel snow, clean
gutters, or wash windows for a
senior citizen.
Do art projects with people in
nursing homes (finger paint,
sponge paint, make snow-
flakes, design cards).
For the food pantry—contribute
the needed items of laundry
soup, personal care items, and
paper products. Volunteer to
help sort and stack items in
your local food pantry.

Senior 4-H’ers State Recognition Opportunities Now is the time to start applying for State 4-H Awards, National 4-H Conference, National 4-H Congress and State 4-H Council. There are many opportunities for 4-H'ers beyond the county level. You can apply for the following state and national events. State 4-H Council - 10th & 11th graders can apply for State 4-H Council. This group plans the State 4-H Conference, helps with the Iowa State Fair, and acts as ambas-sadors for 4-H at various events around the state. National 4-H Congress - 10th & 11th graders can win a trip to Atlanta, Georgia. You will study issues that are important to youth and learn more about making contributions to your community. National 4-H Conference - 9th-11th graders can apply for a trip to Wash-
ington, D.C., where you will meet with 4-H'ers from all over the United States, and help set policies for the national 4-H program. State Project Awards - 9th-12th graders can apply for this award,
which is a $100 savings bond. Pick one or two project areas and tell what you have done and what you have learned, and how you have grown as a 4-H'er. The application form for all of these awards consists of two pages of questions and two additional pages of
support material, which can be a story, photos, records, etc. Or you can do a five minute audiotape or videotape. There will also be a per-sonal interview on March 24 in Ames, so you can talk about the great experiences you've had in

Organizational leaders and project leaders also need to enroll or re-enroll each year for 4-H. You are not covered by the group insurance until you are re-enrolled. packet from the Extension Office with details and forms. Also, please inform the office if there are changes in leader-ship during the year so that we can make sure the proper leader gets information on upcoming events and opportunities.
