Introduction
Configuring and Monitoring EMC Celerra (SNMP) Technical Note
Introduction
Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) is an
end-to-end service-management product that is part of Microsoft
System Center Solutions for Dynamic Data Centers. It works
seamlessly with Microsoft software and applications, helping
organizations increase efficiency while enabling greater control of
the IT environment.
EMC® Celerra® offers powerful, multiprotocol network storage
through its unified storage platforms. Celerra unified storage
systems deliver a single-box block and file solution that offers a
centralized point of management for distributed environments, and
enables dynamic growth, sharing, and cost-effective management of
its multiprotocol file system in addition to providing
multiprotocol block access. Its simultaneous support for Network
File System (NFS) and Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocols
enables Windows and Linux/UNIX clients to share files
simultaneously from the same multiprotocol file system. Celerra
unified storage systems offer native Fibre Channel for
high-bandwidth or latency-sensitive applications and iSCSI for
Tier-2 block applications.
By using SCOM’s Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
support, IT organizations can monitor Celerra systems directly from
SCOM. This document shows you how to monitor Celerra uptime and
events by using SCOM.
Audience
IT organizations that want to leverage the end-to-end service
management of SCOM for proactive operating systems platform,
applications, and service level monitoring can use this document to
follow the detailed procedures on how to monitor Celerra platforms
by using SCOM.

Configuring and Monitoring EMC Celerra (SNMP) Technical Note
SNMP services in SCOM server The first thing to do is verify
whether Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) services are
installed, and then enable the SNMP services in the SCOM
server.
Verify and install SNMP services To install and verify the SNMP
services on the SCOM server:
1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel > Add or Remove
Programs.
Figure 3 Install SNMP services - Start menu
The Add or Remove Programs window opens.
2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components as shown in Figure 4 on
page 6.

Monitor the availability of Celerra with SCOM
Configuring and Monitoring EMC Celerra (SNMP) Technical Note
Install SNMP version hotfix By default, SCOM 2007 can only
monitor network devices that support Simple Network Management
Protocol version 2 (SNMPv2). Because Celerra systems running EMC
Celerra Network Server version 5.6 or earlier support only SNMPv1,
a SCOM hotfix (KB939364) needs to be applied for SCOM to discover
and monitor Celerra.
1. Download the hotfix from the Microsoft website:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939364.
2. Click Hotfix Download Available View and request hotfix
downloads.

Enable SNMP in Celerra Celerra must be SNMP enabled to be
monitored by SCOM. By default, the Control Station is SNMP
disabled. To enable SNMP in Celerra, select Celerra > (Celerra
name) > Security > Network Services, and then right-click the
SNMP services from the Network Services table for the Control
Station.
You do not need to restart Celerra to enable/disable SNMP in the
Control Station, but you need to restart Celerra to enable/disable
SNMP in the Data Movers. Figure 28 on page 20 shows the
enable/disable of SNMP on Celerra.

enter a range of addresses or a single address to search a specific
device. If it is a single address, ensure that you type the same
network address in both the Start and End boxes.
In the Community string box, type public. The Community string
is public by default because it has been specified in the
management server.
Select SNMP v1 from the Version list box. This is because
Celerra supports only SNMP v1 till DART 5.6.
By default, the Discovery Interval is 2 minutes. You can
increase or decrease it based on your requirement.
Click Discover.

More on Alerts In the context of an event notification, the rich
set of Celerra features is monitored at the granular level of what
is known as a “Facility” in the Celerra Manager GUI. The Celerra
Manager GUI provides an interface to select the appropriate
individual facility to monitor based on the severity level —
Critical, Error, Warning, or Info. After an event is triggered, one
or more of the following actions occur — call home, send e-mail, or
SNMP trap. Figure 50 on page 39 shows the available facilities.

Configuring and Monitoring EMC Celerra (SNMP) Technical Note
Appendix: Checklists for troubleshooting
Use the following checklists for each of the given
scenarios.
If Celerra is not discovered: Check if SNMP is enabled from
Celerra Manager. If SNMP is
not enabled, enable it in the Control Station by going to
Celerra Manager > Security, click the Network Service tab, and
then right-click the Control Station and enable it.
Check if the network address range for Celerra is correct. If
not, specify the exact network IP in the Start and End text
boxes.
Check if the SNMP version is specified correctly. Because
Celerra supports only version 1, select SNMP v1. Otherwise, install
the hotfix utility to change it to version 1.
Check if the community string is public. If not, specify the
community string as public only.
If the SNMP services are not enabled on the SCOM server: Check
if the SNMP and SNMP Trap services are running. If
not, right-click the services and restart them. If you are
unable to view the SNMP services, install them
from Add/Remove Windows Components.
