The impact of climate change on SEES’ water resources is a critical issue for society, economy and ecology.

Challenge

The European Environmental Agency (EEA) suggests regional and local projects and studies in order to assess extent of climate change and impact on water resources.

The main water supply problems are related to the significant change of groundwater quantity and quality, which have been observed in the last decades as an effect of land use practices, and are related to climate change.

to safeguard water availability and safety for a sustainable water supply for citizens in different European regions for several decades in the future under the influence of climate change, also provoking land use changes

to develop methodsin order to predict direct or indirect land use change impacts on water supply

to develop measures in order to adapt to those impactsand to support sustainable water supply management

to identify and apply an adequate model in order to quantify climate change on catchment scale

to analyse water balance alterations resulting from climate change and future land use demands

to evaluate anthropogenic (land uses) and natural impacts (climate change) on water supply availability and safety

to develop appropriate technical measures and propose legislative adaptationsto mitigate possible negative effects of climate and land use changes on water supply management

comprehensive and comprehensible handbook of management measures, aiming to support water suppliers, spatial planners and development agencies in coping with impacts of climate change on public water supply, based on scientific findings, tested on catchment scale

it will help executive governmental institutions and policy decision makers for adaptation to future water demand and supply

develop a water supply management system regarding optimisation of water extraction and land use regulations under climate change scenarios for water suppliers in South East Europe

share experience in South East Europe region, raise awareness in the wider public and promote a common approach towards sustainable transnational water management

promote project achievements and propose measures to water suppliers, local authorities and other selected target groups
