Welcome Message
It is my sincere pleasure to welcome all participants to the International
Tokyo Joint Conference. As the local host and a keynote speaker for the
conference, I am excited to help facilitate an atmosphere in which robust
discussions on various topics can flourish. One of the hallmarks of the
conference is its ability to bring together academics and researchers from a
variety of disciplines where each of our unique perspectives can provide
new insights. What new light might an economist shed on your research?
Can a sociologist help you draw a new conclusion from your data set? What
can other participants suggest for your future research directions? It is our
goal to create a collaborative environment throughout the conference.
As the setting for International Tokyo Joint Conference, Tokyo, Japan is an
ideal choice as one of the most exciting, vibrant and ever-developing cities
in Asia. In preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games,
Tokyo is already seeing many transformations across the huge metropolis,
which is home to an estimated 36 million people, or 25% of Japan’s
population. We hope you’ll have time to explore some of the fascinating
neighborhoods of Tokyo: the high street of Omotesando with its brand shops
and pricey cafes; Harajuku with its eclectic mix of fashion and young
crowds (try a crepe from one of the many street stalls there!); Shibuya with
one of the world’s busiest pedestrian intersections; Yoyogi Park or Shinjuku
Gyoen for a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of the sprawling
metropolis. No matter what you do, Tokyo will certainly offer you an
unforgettable experience.
Finally, I look forward to meeting you all in Tokyo and hope that together,
we can make the International Tokyo Joint Conference a successful, fruitful
experience for everyone.
Best regards,
Jeffrey Trambley, local host and keynote speaker

Towards High Definition Air Quality Analysis and Prediction
Dr. Hanmin Jung
Head, Dept. of Convergence Technology Research
Planning
Chief Researcher
Korea Institute of Science and Technology
Information(KISTI)
Daejeon, Korea
Abstract
As the air quality of Korea becomes serious, Korea government has started
national strategic project to reduce particulate matters, especially for PM10
and PM2.5. However, current air condition in densely populated cities with
many skyscrapers cannot be easily analyzed as the number of national air
quality measurement networks is not sufficient to precisely recognize and
monitor different spatial characteristics of each district in the cities. Thus,
we are starting an IT convergence project to measure micro leveled air
quality in a big city with millions population. The major research parts
include development and performance evaluation of air quality sensors,
combinational air quality measurement by car/static/drone sensor
networks, air quality stream big data preparation and processing, and air
quality analysis and prediction based on machine learning like deep learning.
As the first stage of this project, we are developing TuPiX, which is a big
multidimensional array processing platform for providing operational and
analytical libraries, and designing a stream big machine data preparation,
which performs

gathering/time-synchronizing/normalizing/transferring/integrating data.
We hope this project continues to develop a tangible service which enables
to provide behavioral guideline for citizens and makes spreading effects to
other air quality studies. In this talk, I will discover and share various issues
on this project.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics: Towards the
Creation of a Lasting Educational Legacy
Dr. Jeffrey Trambley
Associate Professor, Musashino Gakuin University
and Graduate School, Faculty of International
Communication
Adjunct Professor, Showa Women's University,
Department of English Communication Swizerland
Abstract
With the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC’s) selection of Tokyo as the
host city for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Tokyo embarked on
the long process of making its bid proposals into reality. Though still four
years away, preparations for Tokyo 2020 have already been marred by
several missteps, including a scrapped Olympic stadium design, an Olympic
emblem copyright infringement scandal, and more recently the resignation
of Tokyo’s mayor under accusations of misappropriation of political funds.
Against this negative backdrop, in this keynote speech, I hope to highlight
the more positive side of the preparations underway in the host city,
specifically those in the educational context. Pierre de Coubertin, the founder
of the modern Olympic Games, strongly believed in the educational benefits
that the Olympics could promote and it is therefore the responsibility of host
cities to implement educational programs to achieve this end. How can the
Page 26
26
educational sector support Tokyo, and moreover Japan, to capitalize on the
opportunities presented by hosting this international mega event? What can
be learned from previous host city experiences? Focusing on the unique role
education fulfills, I will show how education could be one of the integral keys
to making Tokyo 2020 a success that extends outside of the sports venues in
which the Games are held and become a transformative catalyst for change
that can extend far into the future for Japan.
Brief Introduction of Dr. Jeffrey Trambley
Jeffrey Trambley is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of International
Communication of Musashino Gakuin University in Japan and at the
institution’s graduate school program. Originally from Minnesota in the USA,
he began his EFL career teaching in the Czech Republic at the secondary
school level. In Japan since 1997, he first spent 2 years as an Assistant
English Teacher (AET) for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science
and Technology of Japan on the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching)
Programme in Fukushima Prefecture before moving to Tokyo to complete a
Master’s degree at the Tokyo College of Music.
He has taught at universities in the Tokyo area since 2002. His research
interests span a variety of disciplines including EFL reading assessment
methods, student motivation, gender bias in testing, and ICT usage. Currently,
his primary research is focused on Olympic Education (OE) and the role of
higher education in the Olympic Movement. He hopes his research will
ensure that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics will provide lasting
educational benefits extending far beyond 2020. He has presented at
conferences in the USA, Europe, and throughout Asia.
Additionally, he writes and edits for official Japanese Ministry of Education
approved English language textbooks with Kyoiku Publishing, one of Japan’s
major publishers for secondary level English textbooks, and his English
phrasebook for Japanese learners was published a second time in March of
2016 under the title Everyday Native Speaker English Conversation: 3100
Real Phrases (ネイティブ日常英会話 リアルフレーズ 3100) with Shinsei
Publishing. Besides university teaching, research and writing, he remains
active as a musician lending his musical skills to concert performances both
as a baritone soloist and choral conductor.
