What Great Athletic Directors DoWhat Great Athletic Directors DoWhat Great Athletic Directors DoWhat Great Athletic Directors DoWhat Great Athletic Directors DoDifferentlyDifferentlyDifferentlyDifferentlyDifferently

By Ken Purcell, Denton Independent District, Texas

1. Coaches must be a role model in both academics andathletics. In Texas coaches must be certified

2. Kids do not love the sport like we do!

3. Kids do not care how much you know until they know howmuch you care.

4. You get one chance to make a first impressionFirst day - dress appropriately, be on time, and speak withauthority. 95% of the CEO’s in this country have athleticsin their background

5. You and your team will seldom exceed your ownexpectations, so set them high. Don’t program kids forfailure

6. Coaches can be campus leaders

7. No negative situation deters us or our program.Adversity causes some men to break and others to breakrecords.

8. We “respond” to situations instead of “react.”

9. People cannot tell any difference in our actions orapproaches to our players, parents or fans by the fact thatour teams. Are winning or losing.

10. Athletics is a “microcosm” of real life.

11. We coach co-curricular activities and not extra-curricularactivities.

12. We praise the “performer” and criticize the “performance.”

13. We are “professional educators and “professional coaches.”

14. Athletics teaches valuable lifetime skills and disciplinethat are not taught in the academic classrooms.

15. Coaches must be role models. Do not live in the future.Be happy today.

Many thanks to Derek Maki for sharing this information fromsome of the workshops he attended.

Do YDo YDo YDo YDo You Get It?ou Get It?ou Get It?ou Get It?ou Get It?Dr. David Hoch, CMAA

At the national conference, I twice had the opportunity to speakwith Tim Flannery, Assistant Director at the National Federation, about membership in the NFHS Coaches Association. Notsurprisingly, there is a huge correlation between coaches’memberships and their athletic directors’ certification andinvolvement in their state association.

When athletic directors “get it,” it is more likely that their coacheswill be members. What do we mean by getting it? There areseveral factors.

Athletic directors who earn their CAA or CMAA certificationunderstand the value of national certification as a professional. Also, in order to earn both athletic administrative certifications,an athletic director has to take several Leadership TrainingCourses. Not only do athletic directors earn their certification, they also learn valuable things which can help to improve theirprogram.

Another important item is the involvement of the athleticdirector. Those athletic administrators who are involved, attendthe conferences and serve in some capacity on the state or nationallevel, are much more likely to have coaches who are members ofthe NF Coaches Association.

These correlations are pretty much common sense. Informed, involved and committed athletic directors usually, sure thereare some exceptions, have coaches who are members. They getit.

It is important for your coaches to be members of the NF CoachesAssociation. Professionalism and increased knowledge meansfewer problems for athletic directors and benefits for our student-athletes and programs.

Of course, in Maryland we have a huge advantage. Our coachescan join through the Maryland State Coaches Association whichhas a dual membership agreement with the NFHS CoachesAssociation. Instead of a membership fee of $30, our coachescan join for only $16.

Stating that you understand and are supportive of the conceptof membership for your coaches is easy. Talk is cheap. Areyour coaches members? If not, why not? Do you get it?

For more information or a membership application [email protected].

What’What’What’What’What’s New with NFHS Coachings New with NFHS Coachings New with NFHS Coachings New with NFHS Coachings New with NFHS CoachingEducation & Certification?Education & Certification?Education & Certification?Education & Certification?Education & Certification?

When fans attend a contest, they often purchase a program toidentify the players. It’s next to impossible to know who is whowithout the list of numbers and names. In like fashion, theNFHS Coaching Education and Certification programs areconstantly introducing new aspects. Here’s your updated programfor both NFHS efforts.

Now athletic directors can pay for a group of their coaches withthe Bulk Online Course Purchase option. The step-by-stepinstructions are listed on the website www.NFHSlearn.com. Thisis one site which you will want to continually check to keeppace with all of the new developments.

To use a purchase order for your coaches, you will need aminimum of 5 total courses which you are going to purchase.Once your purchase order is approved, you will receive “licenses”for your coaches in order for them to register for the courses. There is also a feature that you can use a credit card to purchaselicenses for your coaches and this could mean a quicker turnaround.

One of the nice features of this approach of paying for the coursesis that athletic directors can check the progress of their coacheswith the course. Obviously, you can provide a little reminder ifa coach isn’t doing much after registering for the course.

Also, did you know that your cheerleading coaches can take theAACCA Spirit Safety Certification Course as well online? Thiscourse was developed with the AACCA, a non-profit educationalassociation which provides safety certification and training forcoaches. Please pass this information along to your cheercoaches and encourage them to take the course.

Take a minute in your busy schedule to visit the NFHS CoachingEducation & Certification Website! After doing so, you will bein a better position to recommend it to your coaching staff andto encourage (…or pay for) them to take a course. Betterprepared, professional coaches benefit our athletes and programsand cause us fewer problems.
