creates opportunity

RIGOROUS ACADEMIC PROGRAMSDenisse benefited from being part of thehonors program and credits CUC facultywith thoroughly preparing her for therigors of medical school—and withhelping to hone her empathy skills. “I wantto make my patients feel the way myprofessors made me feel,” says Denisse.“My professors’ care and attention left alasting impression. They were amazing rolemodels who really cared and listened towhat I had to say and would help me inany way.”

Now a pediatric resident at Loma LindaUniversity Children’s Hospital in California,Denisse’s research focus is inflammatorybowel disease (IBD) in children. Inspiredby the experience of her younger sister,Denisse hopes to enhance understandingof the disease and improve the quality oflife of children suffering from IBD. Denissealso plans to pursue a master’s degree inpublic health focusing on maternal childmedicine, examining how a mother’ssocioeconomic, health and educationalstatus affects her children’s health.

Impacting change

Though service has always been a core part of the student experience at Concordia UniversityChicago, with the appointment of a full-time directorof the program, the scope of service learningimpacting each student’s experience has expanded. “Service learning is tied to the content of the class,

and it helps students realize these issues aren’t justtopics in a textbook that they read and talk about inclass,” says Professor Alannah Ari Hernandez, directorof academic service learning. “Students get to seefirsthand up close. It makes the theoretical aspectsthey are learning in class more concrete.” We match our students’ talents with community

needs to potentially change and improve the lives of others. Here are just two ways CUC students are making an impact:n Some Concordia students work as mentors in after-school mentoring sessions with Youth OutreachServices, serving Chicago’s West Side and west suburban communities. n Members of Concordia’s non-partisan conservationorganization met with local and state politicians and lobbied for the Electronic Products Recycling & Reuse Act, or E-Scrap bill, to set up a government-run recycling program for electronics that containmercury, lead and other environmental toxins.

Concordia–Chicago is big enough to offer lots of

opportunities, but small enough that you have

genuine access to those opportunities. Our campus

community is just the right size for you to develop

leadership skills and for involvement.

Clubs and organizations include athletics, academics,

service, the environment, politics, religion and more.

Leading or participating in a campus club or

organization is a way students can serve the

community and often have an impact beyond

campus. Students involved in activities expand their

networks of friends, enrich campus life and add

valuable experiences and leadership positions to their

their organization, set goals to accomplish their

vision, and both inspire and lead others to join in

achieving those goals.
