COOKING PIZZA FACES WITH MS. ABINADER AND MS. OANH AFTER SCHOOL

Learning is not only fun- it can be tasty! Ms. Abinader and Ms. Oanh’s have taken to the kitchen to teach recipes from their home countries- one week a Western recipe, like the great pizzas you see pictured here, and another week a tantalizing Vietnamese recipe. The greatest thing about taking a cooking class? The homework is completely edible!

CONCORDIA HANOI HIGH SCHOOL ELECTS ITS FIRST EVER MODEL UNITED NATIONS REPRESENTATIVES

Concordia Hanoi will send its very first high school delegation to this year’s Model United Nations forum, hosted by our Concordia Shanghai sister. Model United Nations (also often called Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda.

The participants role-play as diplomats representing a country or NGO in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.

As Middle Schoolers, Concordia Hanoi students have had a chance to runt heir own mock MUN groups at school and many similar issues that get debated at this student-led leadership group are ones that regularly are discussed as part of the Concordia Social Studies curriculum. The philosophy of Concordia is not only that our students would possess the critical thinking skills of how to tackle real-life issues but they can see themselves in roles that as adults, they would eventually be in a position to make sure real-life changes that affect our world for the better.Pic: The Concordia Hanoi representatives this year are (left to right) Top row: Tonhi Nguyen, HP Gailey, Will Breeden; Bottom row: Moeka Yoshinari, Hyewon Cho

LEARNING CAN BE...DELICIOUS!

GRADES 3-5 CAME TOGETHER FOR A GREAT DAY OF SPORT

Over 17 teams of third, fourth and fifth graders from schools all over Hanoi came together on the Concordia football fields to have a wonderfully fun-filled day of soccer. Teams were grouped according to their homeroom class and played a mixture of boys and girls with their regular classroom teacher as their coach.

Since Hanoi does not yet boast an elementary school soccer league for the schools, this was a way to get students excited about the sport at a very young age and for those who have never played the game, introduce the rules of soccer and help them to learn to play in a fun way.

The all-day event was represented by teams from Concordia Hanoi, UNIS, St. Paul’s, Wellspring, BVIS Royal City, and Olympia schools. All teams enjoyed a great picnic lunch on the fields and Donkey Bakery was even able to cater a nice brown bag lunch for the event.

A HUGE thank you to Family Medical Practice fro providing the first aid station for the day!

Pics (from top to bottom): Group picture of all the schools that participated in soccer day; Mr. Horvath’s class cheers from the sideline; Jonathan in Grade 4 takes it all the way to the goal; Woojun gives a casual and cool “peace” sign to spectators; Good game high-fives are exchanged after every game; Family Medical Practice helped to take care of all the scrapes and buieses- thank you!

FUN IN MRS. HORVATH’S RECEPTION CLASS

“I don’t know why but I’ve had spiders on my mind all day!” says Min Jae.

Nick learns about bacteria and germs

with the help of a microscope.

Khanh and Ji-Hoo read in pairs and enjoy sharing their favorite books.

Teegan and Jeremy talk about their favorite books and read to each other.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR? Mrs. Gail Horvath, Reception Teacher

“Well, we are pretty excited this year as a class and it is hard to imagine a better group of kids. We have so many new students this semester and our Reception class is quite unique too. Out of our thirteen wonderful students, there are only two girls, but that doesn’t seem to stop any of the great fun and learning that is happening.”

Taking time for a ‘Chinese lunch,’ as the boys called it. “Everyone has to wear these hats and can only speak in Mandarin that we learned in our foreign language class!”
