LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIENCES
INTERIM TRIPS TO HOI AN (CHINA BEACH), SAPA, & MAI CHAU, VIETNAM
An integral part of the Concordia education are the annual interim trips students are required to take starting in middle school and continuing to high school. This year, our middle school students had a choice of either traveling to Sapa in Northern Vietnam for trekking or going to Mai Chau, South West of Hanoi towards the Laos border for rock climbing and adventure cycling.
Concordia high school students traveled to Hoi An, in central Vietnam along China Beach, for a combination of a service trip to build homes there and a marine biology
class that had them searching for animal life below the ocean’s surface.
Throughout the years, teachers get to witness some major spiritual and emotional growth during interim as each student is challenged on a variety of levels. For some, the experience of being away from family for an extended period of time may be new. Others find that the service elements of the trip expose them to people they may not ever have met in their own walk of life and are humbled by the generosity of those more in need than themselves. Still other students simply find that the physical challenges that interim trips might present to be a test of their mental and bodily strength.

I was super exhausted. From the moment I woke up, my arms were sore, my legs were tired, my back hurt, and my eyelids were heavy. I really didn’t want to go work. What I remember though, is challenging myself to help others. This trip was one of the most meaningful and fun trips I’ve ever been to. -Chris Byun (Grade 9 student on Hoi An Interim)

The activity I enjoyed the most among all was the hike. Those astonishing sceneries seemed incredible to me, and I especially liked how the fog made the place look mysterious. As I overlooked the whole village from the top, breathed in fresh air, I really felt like a fairy flying over the pure white clouds. In brief, diverted from my expectation, it was so

A drizzly hike through the plains,ended us up at this homestay.
We didn’t know that the french fries would be good,or that the cool campfire would get us warm and in a good mood,this homestay exceeded the expectations of all.
We couldn’t see the stars at night,
but we slept tight,knowing that our friends were right by our side.It didn’t matter if we didn’t take a shower,the stay at this homestay for a day felt only like 3 hours.
This homestay was the coolest part of the interim trip,and I’ll never forget it,to help me remember the trip,I’mma keep this pic.

relaxing instead of feeling sore after such a long distance hike. The only defect was the bad weather, which the rain made us feel even colder besides the low temperature. However, this was an impressive trip with my teachers and classmates, and I believe that all of us did not only have fun but also learned more about Vietnam.

Reading at Concordia is important, which is why we dedicate at least one hour of every school day to literacy, but when we really get excited is when we dedicate an entire to week to the celebration of reading and all the wonderful adventures we get to celebrate
through books.
Even teachers got in on the book character fun- here is Ms. Seibel dressed as “Pete the Cat”
Drop Everything And Read
(DEAR) time for all students!
The book character parade is always a highlight of book week. Here is Mrs.
Wood’s Grade 1 class all dressed up as their favorite book characters.
Concordia parents got to get in on the book fun with a special day of the week where they were invited to come read with their kids.
Mystery readers visited the classrooms to share their favorite books. Can you guess this mystery reader?

Former Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Pulitzer Prize nominee, Jeff Baily, visited the Concordia Middle and High School to share his story on becoming a professional writing. Students had the chance to ask him questions to help guide their own writing process and learn how they might go about following in similar footsteps.
Middle School students celebrated “Pi Day” (3.14) by competing in the Hanoi Math Olympiad.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FIELD DAY- APRIL17Concordia’s annual field day would not be complete without the help of parent volunteers to help run the different games and stations. There is no need to plan anything for the day, just show up and be ready to help. All parents are welcome and we look forward to a great day of outdoor fun on April 17 from 8:30am-noon.
PARENT SUPPORT ORGANIZATION 1,000 BOOK CHALLENGE!The Concordia PSO have launched a 1,000 BOOK CHALLENGE and challenge all Concordia families to donate at least 10 books to the school so that we reach 1,000 donated books by the end of the school year. Parents are encouraged to donate books (both new and gently used) that they would love to read to their children. This can be in your native language or be a way to share your home culture with the Concordia community. Learn more about the 1,000 Book Challenge by emailing parent representative, Dennis Reed, for more information.
