Concept artist to Client
Background
When a concept artist designs a prop for the client, the concept
artist needs to know the background of
the prop.
Who used it?
What is the condition of the prop? Old, New, Worn out
Setting?
For instance the drop pod portrayed is from a futuristic
setting/world and the military of this world use
the drop pods to land troops in strategic locations on the
battlefield.
Reference
Now it is the concept artists job to get reference of what the
pod may look like.
Thumbnails
Now the artist starts the building portion.
This may consist of:
Sketches
Silhouettes
Some artist may even use 3d tools.

Environments
Background
With environments the client will give the concept artist a
brief stating the background and conditions
of the environment. In this case the environment is a pre-war
abandoned greenhouse built with art
deco architecture. The story is that the current military is
dropping caregiver drop pod to help defend
the local populous from incoming attacks.
These environment pieces help the art director see how the
visuals of the level may look like.
This also helps the environment artist see how to place assets
within the level.
-
This is one of the upper level walkways that the player can
explore. This is a blocked out portion of the
level that is used to help give the Environment artist an idea
of what this portion of the level would look
like. This also depicts what likely assets that will need to be
made and how they will be used in the
environment.

Architecture /Environments assets Concepts
Architectural asset concept art allows the Modelers and
Environment artist to see what the model
would look like and how it may be placed within the
environment.
-
Metal textures
The concept artist will provide multiple versions of a piece so
that the Art Director can choose which is
best to stay consistent with the rest of the level.
These concepts can also be used as guidelines by the texture
artist.
