Herman Miller’s UK manufacturing capability is centred around two facilities Wood Mill, based in Bath which produces all wood based products & the screens & chair assembly plant which is based in Chippenham Wiltshire.

The Wood Mill is 57,500 square foot facility & produces all worktops, wooden screens & modesty panels. The bulk of units produced are melamine based but the facilities also has capability for producing high quality veneer based products. All units are produce from base board material that are delivered in direct from the supplier to site, where a small stock holding is held to support our 10 day program. This facility has capacity to produce over 3,000 on a single shift operation & has the flexibility to go to a second shift if volume requires, at very short notice. The site uses a wide range of CNC programmed machine centres, that cut & finish product to a high standard of quality.

The Seating & Screen assembly production areas are located within our 75,000 square foot Distribution facility. The screen area produce the wide range& size of screens that Herman Miller have in their product offering from floor through to desk up. The screens are made from a wide variety of materials wood, metal etc & are finished either with fabric or solid veneer facing. Due to the wide range of the product offering, assembled processes & systems employed are very flexible to meet the mix of demand.

All seats (Aeron, Mirra Celle and Sayl ) are assembled on one assembly line that is located close to the warehouse that stores the component parts. The line employes ‘mixed model one piece flow’ manufacturing principles, seats are produced in line with the mixed requirements of customer demand, not in batches. Based on a single shift operation the line has capacity up to 3,000 seats per week.

All site have ISO 9001 & 14001 accreditation & this is the base of our internal quality & environmental systems.

Through the use of HMPS (Herman Miller Production

System), based on the Toyota Production System (Lean Manufacturing principles) we are continually improving & developing new methods & systems to improve our manufacturing capabilities & quality of service to our customers. We have adopted this system from Toyota and have a unique relationship with them as we are the only Office Furniture Company who Toyota work with and they support our learning and development. We use different tools to highlight and solve problems within HMPS . We usually start by mapping a particular area by doing a material and information diagram and by doing this we can identify problems related to Health and Safety, Reliability , Quality and Cost. We develop our people by training, coaching in the tools and philosophies of HMPS

Sayl Chair

People at their best live unframed, going beyond expectations to surprise and delight us. With SAYL, we set out to design and build a chair family that gives form to that spirit. Inspired by the principles of suspension bridges, the frameless back of the SAYL work chair encourages a full range of movement while the suspension back material keeps you cool—all with an extremely small environmental impact. It is everything a Herman Miller chair should be.

avoid danger and inconvenience to employees. Requirements of other trades and deliveries are to be part of this planning phase.

Installation of FurnitureCrews will be managed day to day by a site supervisor(s) and the Herman Miller Project Manager can be in attendance for the installation period. This will be determined by the level of difficulty and site problems experienced.

Punch List and RectificationThe Herman Miller project manager will attend site at the appropriate time to sign off each phase / project. He will agree a punch list with the relevant client representative and publish the time scale and arrangements for rectification work.

Post occupation and supportAt an agreed time, say 1 month after user occupation the HM project or account manager would visit the site with our client and agree any modifications / remedial work which may be required in the light of user experience of the work area. Again a time scale and plan will be published by the HM project manager should any actions be required.

Arrangements for key replacement and other minor routine maintenance will be put in place. Contact names and numbers will be supplied for post completion Customer Support.

We have an established global dealer network in all major business centres throughout EMEA. Dealers and associated projects would be assisted by and overseen by our UK project managers. This approach ensures consistency from a specification and installation point of view.

Order Processing and Delivery PlanningWhen the purchase order is received Herman Miller Customer Support will enter the order to the production and distribution control system. The planned daily deliveries to site will be used to define the way that the order is phased through production. This planning process takes account of distribution requirements as well as the offload and access constraints of the building. The install sequence on site will define the daily delivery plan to minimise congestion on site.

Programme Visibility / CommunicationA Microsoft Project Gantt Chart will be produced by the Herman Miller project manager to show timescales and dependencies for the delivery of each project / phase. Ahead of the installation date as soon as the site is advanced enough to allow, Herman Miller will visit the site to check as built critical dimensions. Should this require a change in the furniture layout revised drawings and time scale / cost implications will be reported.Installation crews will be appointed and made aware of any site rules / constraints specific to the site. Installers trained and experienced in the installation of the chosen product will be selected.

Delivery to floor planning will be in conjunction with the appropriate client contact. Timings will be planned to ensure availability of lifts and to

Herman Miller’s design protocolOur commitment to corporate sustainabilitynaturally includes minimising the environmental impact of each of our products. Our Design for the Environment team (DfE) applies environmentally sensitive design standards to both new and existing Herman Miller products, utilizing the McDonough-Braungart Cradle-to-Cradle Protocol.

Cradle-to-Cradle goes beyond regulatorycompliance to thoroughly evaluate newproduct designs in three key areas:

• Material Chemistry and Safety of Inputs—What chemicals are in the materials we specify, and are they the safest available?

• Disassembly—Can we take products apart atthe end of their useful life, to recycle theirmaterials?

Herman Miller’s environmental advocacy is long-standing and comprehensive. Since the 1950s, we have been, in the words of founder D.J. De Pree, ‘stewards of the environment.’ Today over 400 employees play a direct role in the work of 9 different environmental groups engaged in efforts from improving air quality and reducing waste to green energy.

Material contentAbak desking components are constructed from steel, wood, aluminum, plastic, and textile.

Abak desking is up to 61 percent recyclable atthe end of its useful life.

Abak is comprised of 43 percent recycled materials. This figure breaks down to 12 percent post-consumer and 31 percent pre-consumer recycled content.
