First Computer

• Invented by Konrad Zuse in 1936

• Named Z1 computer

“Debug”

• In 1878 Thomas Edison coined the term “bug” and “debugging” when working with his inventions

Internet Facts

• The Internet began in 1969 by ARPA

• It was designed for research, education, and government organizations.

Babbage’s Analytical Engine

• A mechanical digital computer which, viewed with the benefit of a century and a half's hindsight, anticipated virtually every aspect of present-day computers.

Tabulating Machine

• It was invented for or their ability to count combined facts. These machines reduced a ten-year job to three months

ENIAC

• The first general-purpose electronic computer.

• Built at The Moore School of Electrical Engineering, now part of the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Program

• An organized list of instructions that, when executed causes the computer to behave in a predetermined manner.

Benefits of using a Transistor over Vacuum Tubes

• Smaller size

• Lower cost

• Lower possible operating voltages

• Operation without a warm up period

Microcomputer

• Intel’s founder, Robert Noyce, chartered Ted Hoff’s Applications Research Department in 1969, to find new applications for silicon technology.

Binary System

• Bit-A binary digit is called a bit. Usually expressed as 0 and 1 the two numbers of the binary numbering system. A bit is the smallest unit of information a computer can use.

• Byte-A group of 8 bits are in a byte. With 8 bits there exists 256 possible denary combinations. Large numbers of bytes can be expressed by kilobyte and megabyte.
