Binary Language

A computer uses a binary language to work Binary means “2”

Series of ON and OFF switches 1 and 0 in binary code

The more switches you have, the more combinations of ON and OFF you can make

Page 8: COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

Bit

Smallest unit of a computer program

This is the series of 1’s and 0’s

“Bit” stands for binary digits

Turn the circuits on and off

Nibble- A group of 4 bits

Page 9: COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

Byte

2 nibbles or 8 bites= 1 Byte

A basic unit of instruction

A character in the alphabet, a space, a number, symbols, etc.

If you press a key on the keyboard, it is translated into a byte

Page 10: COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

How does it work?

The smallest unit of storage is a Bit. It takes 8 bites to equal 1 Byte.

Information is stored in BYTES – a basic unit of instruction. Every character in the alphabet, a space, a number, symbols—every time you press a key on the keyboard, you create a BYTE!

Page 11: COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

STORAGE SPACE

Bite – smallest unit of storage

BYTE – a unit (one letter, number, etc.)

KILOBYTE – 1000 bytes

MEGABYTE – 1,000,000 (one million) bytes

GIGABYTE – 1,000,000,000 (one billion) bytes

TERABYTE – 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion) bytes

Page 12: COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

PROGRAM

A set of computer instructions that is read by the computer to do tasks

A FILE and a PROGRAM are not the same thing!

Page 13: COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

NETWORK

LAN – Local Area Network – within a building WAN – Wide Area Network – between buildings Share information, programs, printers across the

network

PASSWORD

A secret code that only the user knows to get into his/her files

Do not share this password with anyone, as it breaks down the security system

VIRUS

A computer program someone writes to be a trouble-maker or to cause damage

Usually attached to an innocently named file or email and when the file is opened, it causes the virus to drop into the computer system.

If introduced on a network, consequences can be devastating
