COMPUTER TECHNOLOGYINTRO NOTES – Warning! This will be
on a test!
What is a Computer?
A computer is an electronic device that:1. Accepts input2. Processes data3. Stores data4. Produces Output
What are the types of computers?
SOFTWARE vs HARDWAREA SET OF INSTRUCTIONS, A
PROGRAM
SOFTWARE Microsoft Office Suite▪ Word▪ Excel▪ Access▪ PowerPoint▪ Publisher▪ Outlook
Windows Movie Maker
EQUIPMENT
HARDWARE Input Devices▪ Keyboard▪ Microphone▪ Scanner
Output Devices▪ Printer▪ Screen/Monitor▪ Fax▪ Speakers
Binary Language
A computer uses a binary language to work Binary means “2”
Series of ON and OFF switches 1 and 0 in binary code
The more switches you have, the more combinations of ON and OFF you can make
Bit
Smallest unit of a computer program
This is the series of 1’s and 0’s
“Bit” stands for binary digits
Turn the circuits on and off
Nibble- A group of 4 bits
Byte
2 nibbles or 8 bites= 1 Byte
A basic unit of instruction
A character in the alphabet, a space, a number, symbols, etc.
If you press a key on the keyboard, it is translated into a byte
How does it work?
The smallest unit of storage is a Bit. It takes 8 bites to equal 1 Byte.
Information is stored in BYTES – a basic unit of instruction. Every character in the alphabet, a space, a number, symbols—every time you press a key on the keyboard, you create a BYTE!
STORAGE SPACE
Bite – smallest unit of storage
BYTE – a unit (one letter, number, etc.)
KILOBYTE – 1000 bytes
MEGABYTE – 1,000,000 (one million) bytes
GIGABYTE – 1,000,000,000 (one billion) bytes
TERABYTE – 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion) bytes
PROGRAM
A set of computer instructions that is read by the computer to do tasks
A FILE and a PROGRAM are not the same thing!
NETWORK
LAN – Local Area Network – within a building WAN – Wide Area Network – between buildings Share information, programs, printers across the
network
ERGONOMICS Describes computer
environment Comfort level of user Room temperature Chair comfort Wall texture Lighting Window Coverings Monitor and keyboard
tilting
PASSWORD
A secret code that only the user knows to get into his/her files
Do not share this password with anyone, as it breaks down the security system
CLOUD
Cloud computing lets users utilize services without having to purchase hardware or install software since it is all web-based
"The cloud" refers to services and technologies that allow computing to take place over the internet in real time.
Common cloud technologies Gmail FacebookSkype.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Can include: Facebook Instagram Twitter
refers to the set of web-based and mobile technologies that are used for communication and interaction
VIRUS
A computer program someone writes to be a trouble-maker or to cause damage
Usually attached to an innocently named file or email and when the file is opened, it causes the virus to drop into the computer system.
If introduced on a network, consequences can be devastating
Cookies
Good for business because they target people that like their type of sites and have an increased chance of making a sales
Good for customer since they see sites of interest
Bad for customer since they lose part of their privacy and cookies take up room on the hard drive and could slow down the computer’s speed
Internet programs that keep track of what type of sites you have visited and then sell that information to companies of the same type of sites …
Jobs and Wozniak PC’s were invented in 1977 by Steve Jobs and
Steve Wozniak—19 years old! Steve Jobs also invented the iPod!

Wang Word Processor—only word processing! But no more problems with “typos”! Note the very small screen.Courtesy of the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History in Washington, D. C.
Impact of Jobs and Woz
Founded Apple, Inc.
Name came from an apple orchard commune in Oregon that Steve Jobs belonged to with his girlfriend
“Apple” comes before “Atari” in the phonebook
Impact of Jobs and Woz
First to mass market PC- you didn’t have to put it together
Went for the school market
The new generation would grow up with PCs and use them in business

Still impacts us today…
Bill Gates
Bill Gates began programming when he was 13 years old founded Microsoft in 1975 with his childhood friend, Paul Allen

Went to Harvard Dropped out his Junior year
Vision that computers would be a valuable BUSINESS tool
Easier to work with compared to Jobs
ETHICS
“Old fashioned” morals and values still apply Document your sources Do not use the computer to take or steal or use
information without express permission
Basic Computer Sense
SAVE YOUR WORK OFTEN!!
Back up your files and keep them in a separate location
Use Antivirus software
No food or drink allowed in computer lab or near computers
