This module was designed to give you knowledge and demonstrate an
understanding of concepts and principles in setting up computer servers. It gives you a
clear picture on how to able to set up computer servers based on acceptable standards and
hardware.
In order for you to finish this module successfully you have to understand clearly
and follow the directions correctly.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. create user folder in accordance with Network operating system features;
2. configure user access level based on NOS features;
3. established network access level
4. perform security check in accordance with established network access policies/end-
user requirements;
Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer. Use a separate sheet of paper for your
answers.
1. Which of the following best describes Network Operating System?
a. It supports file sharing among workstations
b. It manages workstations in the network
c. It provides printer sharing
d. All of the above
2. The following are examples of Network operating systems except____
a. Windows Server c. Mac OS X Server
b. Linux d. Windows 7
3. It is a type of network operating systems that share resources among computer connected to the network without central control is called____________.
a. Peer to peer network c. Mac OS Server
b. Client-server network d. Windows Server
4. It is a type of network operating systems that requires regular updates and maintenance is called ____________.
a. Peer to peer network c. Mac OS Server
b. Client-server network d. Windows Server
5. One of the advantage of peer to peer network is the ease of set-up. How you would describe it?
a. New technology can be integrated into the system
b. Server is necessary to complete the set-up
c. Less hardware is needed
d. All of the above
Lesson
1 Network operating systems (NOS)
features
Before we move on, let’s see if you can still remember your past lessons when you were in
Grade Nine (9).
Arrange the jumbled words to identify what is being described in the sentence. Use a
separate sheet of paper to write your answer.
1. I T N G A R O E P M E S S Y T- the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals.
2. D O S W N I W E E R V S- is a series of enterprise-class server operating
systems designed to share services with multiple users and provide extensive administrative control of data storage, applications and corporate networks. the ability to handle the business
3. R E M O C U P T W R O N T E K – is a set of computers connected together for the purpose of sharing resources.
4. R E V S R E – a computer or computer program which manages access to a centralized resource or service in a network.
Encircle the ten (10) important words related to our lesson. Hint: words

SERVER SECURITY RESOURCES
NETWORK CENTRALIZE HARDWARE
A network operating system
(NOS) is an operating system designed for
the sole purpose of supporting
workstations, database sharing, and
application sharing and file and printer
access sharing among multiple
computers in a network.
Examples of Network Operating Systems:
Types of Network Operating Systems
1. Peer-to-peer network (P2P) operating system users are allowed to share resources and files located on their computers and access shared resources from others.
2. Client-server network operating systems allow networks to centralize functions and applications in
one or more dedicated file servers. The server is the center of the system, allowing access to resources and instituting security.
Advantages and Disadvantages
ADVANTAGES
• Centralized servers are more stable.
• Security is provided through the server.
• New technology and hardware can be easily integrated into the system.
• Hardware and the operating system can be specialized, with a focus on performance.
• Servers are able to be accessed remotely from different locations and types of systems.
• Ease of setup
• Less hardware needed, no server need be acquired
DISADVANTAGES
• Buying and running a server raises
costs.
• Dependence on a central location for operation.
• Requires regular maintenance and updates.
• No central location for storage
• Less security than the client–server model
Directions: Complete the table. Compare and contrast Client-server computer from peer to peer network.
Client-server network vs. Peer to peer network
Similarities Differences
Directions: Express what you have learned in this lesson by completing the sentences
below.

B. No server is required in peer to peer network C. Network Operating System is not useful D. All of the above
2. Windows server, Mac Os X and Linux are examples of______? A. Network Operating System C. Printer Sharing B. Operating System D. File Server
3. What is the best way to describe Client-server network? A. No central location for storage B. Central server are stable C. Less secured D. Printer sharing is not allowed
4. All of the choices are advantages of Peer to peer network except_____? A. No central Storage C. Less hardware needed B. Ease to set-up D. No server is required
5. An operating system which can be used to support workstations in order share resources? A. NOS C. OS X Server B. P2P D. Linux
