Microsoft Update What is Microsoft Update?

A new Microsoft Website where you can find updates for Microsoft Windows-based operating system software and Windows-based hardware. Updates protect your computer against indentified security risks and address recognized problems.

By turning on Automatic Updates, Microsoft Updates is able to deliver high priority updates (the most important updates) to your computer as they become available and you can decide when and how they are installed.

Microsoft Updates

How does Microsoft Updates work?

When you go to the Microsoft Updates Website, the updating software identifies which version of Windows and other Microsoft products you use and which updates are available to you.

The website displays only the updates that apply to your computer rather than all of the updates published by Microsoft.

Page 7: Computer Maintenance

Microsoft Update What types of updates are available?

High Priority – Critical updates, security updates, service packs, and update rollups. These updates should be installed ASAP and before installing other optional updates.

Software – Optional updates that are non-critical fixes for windows programs, such as Windows Media Player and Windows Journal Viewer 1.5.

Hardware – Optional updates that are non-critical fixes for drivers and other hardware devices, such as video cards, sound cards, scanners, printers and cameras.

Page 8: Computer Maintenance

Microsoft Update What is the difference between Express

and Custom? Express (recommended) – Displays all of the

high priority updates available. You can install the updates with one click of your mouse. This is the most convenient way to keep your computer updated.

Custom – Displays all updates available for your computer, high priority and optional updates. You can review the list of updates and select the ones you want to install.

Automatic Updates Overview You can set up your computer to automatically

download and install updates without having to manually check the website.

Windows regularly checks for updates that can help protect and update your computer.

The updates are available through the Microsoft (or Windows) Update Website and include the high priority updates such as security updates, critical updates, or service packs.

Page 26: Computer Maintenance

LSTA Training Technology Trainers Grant

Automatic Updates Overview If you would rather download and install

the updates yourself, you have the option of setting up Automatic Updates to notify you whenever any new high-priority updates are available for your computer.

Page 27: Computer Maintenance

LSTA Training Technology Trainers Grant

Why use scheduled updates? Convenience – No need to remember to visit the

Website or choose which updates are the most important.

Reliability – Updates are downloaded behind the scenes whenever you are connected to the Internet. The downloads usually don’t interfere with your work, although you may have to accept EULAs and/or restart your computer occasionally.

Up-to-date software – You set the schedule; therefore Windows is routinely checking for and installing the high priority updates that your computer needs.

In summary, by using automatic updates you can quickly and easily keep your computer updated without worrying about it.

Accessing Automatic Updates

Recommend using first choice – Automatic.

Schedule a good time for the updates to occur, may take some time.

Three other choices. Benefits and

drawbacks of using Automatic (IE 7.0).

Page 31: Computer Maintenance

Our Recommendations Use Automatic to “Automatically download

recommended updates for my computer and install them at:” the most convenient time for your library.

Check the Microsoft Update Website occasionally for additional, non-critical updates.

Symantec AntiVirus Recommendations

Page 34: Computer Maintenance

LSTA Training Technology Trainers Grant

Antivirus Recommendations Make sure your computer runs anti-virus

software. If not, buy and install it immediately. Software must be updated regularly as new

viruses appear daily. Configure the programs to automatically download updates, making it easy to stay protected.

STLS recommends that all member library computers use Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition.

Symantec is an effective and highly regarded anti-virus software application.

Page 35: Computer Maintenance

LSTA Training Technology Trainers Grant

Symantec Anti-Virus SoftwareRecommendations: Auto Protect always running. Daily quick scan. Single weekly scheduled full scan. Always scan floppy disks and USB storage

devices when first used, especially if the disk is shared.

If frequently attacked add a full scan at start-up or a daily scheduled full scan.

Page 36: Computer Maintenance

LSTA Training Technology Trainers Grant

Symantec AntiVirus Installation directions on STLS Website. Default scheduled scans. Important to make sure the computer is on

and connected to the Internet in order to enable the delivery of updated virus definitions.

Page 37: Computer Maintenance

LSTA Training Technology Trainers Grant

Symantec AntiVirusMay need to update before the

scheduled time when:

Someone in the system, or someone who regularly emails you, becomes infected.

Suspect you may be infected but virus scan is not detecting anything.

Hear a new (legitimate) virus is attacking.

Live Update When a virus or security risk is identified a

signature of that risk is stored in a definitions file. The definitions file contains the necessary information to detect, eliminate, and repair the effects of the virus or security risk.

Symantec makes updated virus definitions available on an ongoing basis for delivery using LiveUpdate.
