As most of you have heard by now, Ancestry.com stopped selling Family Tree Maker as of December 31st, 2015. Ancestry will continue to support current own-ers of Family Tree Maker at least through January 1, 2017. During this time, all features of the software, including TreeSync™, will continue to work, and Member Services will be available to assist with user questions. They will also address major software bugs that may occur, as well as compatibility updates.
For those using Family Tree Maker that attend our Workshops, please give us feedback about continuing our Family Tree Maker Workshops. At our Workshop meeting coming up on February 20, we will discuss options for changing to other software. For our Tech Talk, Lori Collins will demonstrate RootsMagic and Vern Tomkins will demonstrate options for using Legacy Family Tree. This might help those wanting to change to see both programs. We will then break into our work-shops for more information on these programs. For those using Reunion for Mac, Nancy Ratay will help those wanting to make the transition to this Program. As always, The Master Genealogists continues to draw interest even though it was a discontinued program from last year.
Starting in February, we will have a DNA discussion group during our workshops. If you are planning to have a DNA test or have already been tested, bring your laptop or information and share what you have found. This will give those in the group a chance to see Family Tree DNA, Ancestry DNA and 23andMe. This group will also help prep those attending our March 5th Seminar with Cece Moore, the Genetic Genealogist.
I am looking forward to our next meetings with Gary Ratay demonstrating Adobe Photoshop Elements. I have been using Version 9, and there are some great changes in the Version 14 Edition. They keep making it easier! We will also have a drawing for Version 14 at our next meeting.

The Colorado Genealogical Society and the CGS/Computer Interest Group are excited to present CeCe Moore are our speaker at the joint CGS and CIG Spring Seminar, Saturday, March 5, 2016. The seminar will be held in the Lower Level Conference Room at the Denver Public Library, 10 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy., Denver.
As an experienced media consultant, CeCe has appeared on CBS This Morning, 20/20, and The Doctors. Currently, she is working as the genetic genealogy consultant for two PBS television shows, “Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.” and “The Genealogy Roadshow”. She serves as the lead “Ancestry Advis-er” to 23andMe and is the Co-Director of the Global Adoptee Ge-nealogy Project. She is also the Adoption Search Angel on the DNA Detectives Facebook page, and is the International Society of Genetic Genealogy’s Regional Coordinator for Southern Cali-fornia. She is frequently consulted by and quoted in the press with regard to the emerging personal genomics industry.

Many of you were aware of the imminent closing of the church we met at for ten years, Christ the King Lutheran Church in Southwest Denver.
Here is what’s going on:
Originally, when I let the societies know of this possi-bility in June 2015, I said that we were in the discus-sion stage and the actual closing date (if any) was up in the air. I continued that if we did close, it prob-ably wouldn’t be until sometime late in 2016. It was decided, however, by CIG and CGS to immediately find another meeting location. (This action did not mean the church was immediately closing.) With prompting from the Denver Public Library, it was de-cided to move the meetings downtown to their cen-tral location starting in Sept. 2015, which meant both meetings would be on a Saturday.
A recommendation by the Christ the King church council was made in November 2015 for closing the church with a vote to take place on January 31, 2016. As this date approaches, a few positive changes have been made at the church. We have opened a community center that is sparking a lot of interest in the neighborhood. Therefore, the vote on the closing of the church has been moved back until June 2016. If closing is the final decision, it will take six months to complete the closure. As far as I know, I will still work here through the closure. If we vote to stay open, I will continue to work here as long as it is a full-time job.
Yes, the church is still open, and yes, I still work there. I do miss all of the wonderful meetings we had at the church and being able to provide hospital-
ity to everyone at our past meetings. Lynette Dick
Long-time CIG member, John Blair, died this past November. His service was held at our previous meeting
location at Washington Park United Methodist Church. He was buried at Fairmont Cemetery. John was CIG’s publication chair, selling books at our meetings, for many years. John faithfully attended CIG meetings when we moved to Christ the King, until his health declined.

Photomyne is an app that lets you scan your entire printed photo collection, in just minutes. You can easily scan your photo albums, with-out taking the photos out of the album.
To scan photos, position the camera directly over your album pages or a few photos scat-tered on a table and start taking photos, one after the other. The software intelligently sepa-rates individual prints into a digital equivalent.
There are only three rules for best results: Make sure all four corners fit into the frame, place photos on a clean, uncluttered surface, and hold your device directly over prints, ra-ther than at an angle. When you’re finally done with your masterpiece, just tap on the heart to bring up the share sheet. How Long Is Windows 7 Safe to Use?
On December 21, 2015, a Denver Post reader posed this question to Tamara Chuang, the Post’s Tech Editor:
Q: Will I be able to use Windows 7 safely for the next few years? I have the option to switch to Windows 10, which most likely won’t support my printer and several important programs that I don’t wish to pay to upgrade because they suit my present needs, although they are a few years old. My present setup works well, and I’m afraid I will regret changing, which will require upgrades, etc.
A: Microsoft will support Windows 7 (with Service Pack 1) until January 14, 2020, according to the company’s Windows lifecycle guide. . . . .

Can’t Find System Restore on Windows 10?

Lately, I have been noticing numerous questions being asked about whether Microsoft got rid of System Restore. It is still there, but Microsoft has disabled it, due to the space requirements that it needs. Even though, Microsoft will not answer anyone's questions, this is what has been speculated.
To enable System Restore:
You need to go to your “Control Panel,” and click on “System.” When that comes up, go to “System Pro-tection.” It should say that your protection is off. Select your drive and click “Configure.” Then, turn on “System Protection.” You need to decide how much disk space you want for your restore points. The least amount that you have, the fewer points you will be able to keep. Then, click “Ok.” Your System Restore will then be enabled.
When you need to use your System Restore, go back to “System Protection” panel that you used when you set this up and just click on the “System Restore” button. Also, make sure that you have enough storage on your PC.
Microsoft does have some really good features that can get you up and running without having to take Windows 10 off and then re-install it. Microsoft did install a reset feature that will not wipe out your files.
Using a Wand Scanner, Making it Simple

What do you use to copy data when you do your family research? I have tried using my phone camera, a digital camera and many dimes and quarters in the copy machine. Voila, introducing the wand scanner.
After using different types of scanners, the wand scanner works best for me. I can copy a book page, photos, and documents. Although, it does not stitch larger docu-ments together like the Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner, I have not had a problem. I can scan up to 900 DPI (dots per inch) if needed, but that has not been necessary. I usually scan at the 300 DPI default unless I am scanning a photo and I will reset the scanner to 600-900 DPI.
It is easy to use. Press the button and slide the scanner over the page. If you are going too fast, it will let you know. After scanning the document, push the button again and it is now recorded on an SD card. Take the SD card and insert in your computer and there you go. You can now download the docu-ments for easy viewing. My desktop computer will not take and SD card, so I insert it into my laptop. Some tablets do have a slot for an SD card or you can get an adapter. If I want to transfer the docu-ments to my desktop computer, I will copy the photos on my Laptop to I-cloud or google drive and re-trieve them from my desktop computer. Dropbox works too.
With little said about the Wand Scanner, it might be something to consider. Average price is $49.99 to 99.99 for higher resolution. I use the VuPoint Magic Wand Portable Scanner.

Changes Coming in Family Tree Maker and Ancestry!

Recently, Ancestry.com announced that Family Tree Maker (FTM) will no longer be updated. Ancestry will discontinue being in the software business. Family Tree Maker will be supported by Ancestry.com (and Ed Richard) through 2016.
Several facts:
1. Ancestry is the largest Corporate Genealogy company in the World. Family Tree Maker is the #1 Selling program, and the Ancestry Database contains over 12 Billion indexed Digital Records. There are 2 billion+ International Records world wide, and new records are being added rapidly. Subscrip-tions include FindaGrave, Fold 3, and Newspapers.com.
2. In mid-December, FTM autodownloaded a minor update for FTM 2014. Updates for FTM 2014 are ordinary events which happened every few months since FTM 2014 was issued in September 2013.
3. Ancestry Family Tree App for Android* and Mac continues to be improved. (Ancestry Tree App may be downloaded for free at the "Play Store") The App does not have the publish, map, edit or several other features in FTM.
An FTM tree option is to sync your tree to the ‘’Cloud” at Ancestry.com. My priceless file is saved off my site. The FTM option can be set to automatically Sync the tree (save changes) when the database is closed down.
Ancestry has an excellent Family Tree App, free from Play Store in both Windows and Mac Versions. From the sync files, Ancestry makes your tree available in full, on Android and Mac phones and tab-lets.
Using the App, one can add to or change information in a tree: Add an individual. Take a photo with the App device, attach it to an individual in the Family File. Enter information during an interview or at a re-pository. The change will be on your file the next time you sync your tree on the windows or Apple com-puter.
In Sync, if you use both a laptop and a desktop, make one the master computer for Genealogy. Only one Windows or Apple device can sync (up or down) a tree. Your subscription allows sync files from any computer to the cloud, but the trees need a slightly different name, e.g. JohnDoeDesktop.FTM, and JohnDoeLaptop.FTM. The owner can download the Synced tree to any device, however, downloads take time for files with several thousand individuals. To transfer between computers, export an updated file to a USB drive, and then copy the updated file to the other computer.
Family Tree Maker and the App have many more facts than GED 5.0. FTM users may add facts which will sync and download. Download your file into any computer device with your Ancestry.com name and password.

Synced trees can be public or completely private and have several levels of access - view only, edit, etc. to spe-cific individuals. The downloaded tree will have an extension of .*FTM and can be opened only with FTM. For ex-ample, you can let other people view your tree. Additionally, if you give edit rights to the tree, they can add or mend information. Any person can, without a paid subscription, join Ancestry, view public trees, access some rec-ords free.
Ancestry‘s Android program is updated frequently. The latest App version auto downloads to the Android or Ap-ple. Large files take a while to download, so download while recharging the phone at night and on free WiFi. A recent upgrade to the Ancestry Family Tree app, auto checks Ancestry leafs (hint of a possible match for an indi-vidual). Ancestry’s search engine analyzes each individual in a file.
Clicking the large green leaf at the top of the tree on the App, gives several options for filtering the match. I sug-gest “best match” or “latest”. (There are several name filter options.) The filtered matches will download to the android. There will be pictures, census records, draft registrations, obituaries, death records, petitions for naturali-zation, and “public” trees in the cloud. Matches, by individual, appear in thumbnails. Touch the thumbnail to views full screen. That match, if appropriate after inspection, can be linked to the individual. Then, on the next down sync, the new fact, media, etc. may be located with that individual in FTM on the desktop.
After adding the recently found links from the App, down sync your file with your ”master” computer. Then, use Family Tree Maker’s unique merge capability to selectively merge the pertinent information in the record into your file. For example, if a matched and linked census record is not yet in your file, find that record on Ancestry.com and selectively* merge the individuals and their respective facts into your master file.
*Ancestry and FTM latch together to provide a selective indexed data merge (some census data i.e. occupation, street address, etc. are not currently indexed). Merging a census file with a family with 5 or 6 children is normally a 3 to 5 minute process with no typing.
At the CIG workshop in February, we will demonstrate the FTM-Ancestry link to merge and auto fill the FTM file data file from Ancestry's records.
If you do not have FTM 2014, try to find a copy . There may be some still available at stores. FTM 2014 is NOT available on Amazon.com or Ancestry.com.
My personal prediction: Ancestry will combine Family Tree Maker and the Ancestry App to develop and sell a Family Tree Program for laptop and desktop computers (including MAC OS) and Android and Mac Apps. The new program(s) will be identical or integrated with the App version and have the Publish, analyze, search, place
and map and add data capability of FTM. The new FTM will automatically convert your FTM file. Ed Richard

ReunionTouch

Just a note up front7 please let me know if you are interested in continuing the Reunion workshops before the beginning of February. I need time to prepare to either do Reunion or to switch and help Gary with scanning/digital. We are meeting at the Denver Public Library (see schedule). I would welcome any Mac users who have been using Family Tree Maker for Mac. Please feel free to email topics or ques-tions you would like to see addressed either in a workshop or in an article to [email protected].
As reported in my introduction to Reunion 11, the iPad and iPhone apps have had a major redesign with the upgrade to Reunion 11. Previously there was one separate app for each device that you had to purchase. These have been combined into a dual platform app with much improved syncing capabilities with Reunion 11 on your computer. The new app sells for $14.99, but once you buy it you can download it to all of your devices. If your family shares an Apple account like Gary and I do, your spouse and/or children can also download the app to their devices. There are a lot more options for working with your files directly on your device than before. I also like that (finally) family multi-media is included. Only individual people multi-media used to be available on your device.
The user interface (how it works and looks) for ReunionTouch is basically the same as the previous app. If you’ve used the old app you can slip right in to using this one right away. The most appealing part of the new app is the ability for automatically syncing all devices without having to always do something manually with your devices all together. Now you can sync remotely if you have wifi.
Automatic syncing is managed by the use of Dropbox. You must have a Dropbox account (available for free up to 2G) as well as Reunion 11 running on your computer. You must keep your working master copy of Reunion 11 in your Dropbox for it to sync with devices. There is a video about setting up the Dropbox sync at: http://www.leisterpro.com/doc/video/videoplayer.php?video=R11_RT_sync. You can also check the Help Manual under Mobile Devices and Dropbox Sharing for very explicit directions about the setup. There are also direc-tions for those of you who still keep desktop and laptop copies for setting up the automatic syncing of these as well. Setting this up is best detailed in either of these locations rather than repeating it here.
As noted in my first introduction of Reunion 11, it is possible to share your database with interested relatives so they can see it, but not change it. There are 3 methods listed now on the Reunion FAQ page, http://www.leisterpro.com/reuniontouch/questions/sharewithkids.php. I prefer the first method. It involves having the interested party getting the ReunionTouch app for their device (iPad or iPhone) and you setting up a sharing folder on Dropbox. When you go to your Dropbox account online, click on the rainbow icon/Sharing, and it is pretty easy to follow. You put a copy of your Reunion 11 file into the shared folder. Yes, you have to remember to put an updated copy into that folder periodically. Dropbox then lets you “invite” the relative when you author-ize them for the shared folder with their email address. If the shared file is only a copy of your master file, they cannot change anything accidentally. Your master file resides in the main Dropbox, not in a shared folder.
I periodically make a copy of my master file in Dropbox to my Reunion Files folders as a backup. You can hold down the option key while you drag and drop the file and it copies it rather than moves it.
I feel that this change will greatly help the fact that I only take my iPad with me for research. While you are away, your home computer is probably shut down. When you reestablish your wifi connection and open Reun-ion 11, it should then automatically sync with the changes you made on your research trip. Of course, you had to have a wifi connection with ReunionTouch open sometime while on your trip for syncing to occur. If your trip was out in the boonies at some cemetery with no wifi, be sure to link up the mobile device to wifi and open Re-unionTouch before doing any work on your home computer if you expect it to sync correctly.

Roots Magic 7

Recently, RootsMagic came up with numerous upgrades for RootsMagic 7, RootsMagic 6 and RootsMagic 5.
RootsMagic 7 Updates: WebHints: RootsMagic will search your records and try to match them with FamilySearch and MyHeritage. A light bulb will appear in your database (this has been there for awhile). When you click on the light bulb, a web browser will show up with the records (to see some of the records, you may have to have a subscription) DataClean: NameClean will go through the personal names in your database and will fix the problems. PlaceClean will also go through your database and fix the names of your places. Compare Files: If you happen to have two databases, it will go through both of these and will show issues be-tween the two. It will also share the data between the files. Publish Online: It will publish your Family Tree on MyRootsMagic.com. Database-driven sites with pedigree, individual and family for each one. Will also add your sources, media and notes with it. Can also add password protect. Import Lists: It will also customize all of your lists, whether it is your ToDo list, Place list, Source List, Source Templates and others. Backup and Restore with your Media: When you backup your database, it will also backup your media and even restore it (if needed) QuickGroups: Here you can see if someone in your database belongs
Drag-and-Drop Media: Can now drag-and-drop pictures and files into your media screen
RootsMagic 6 Updates: Problem Alerts: There is an exclamation point in a triangle that warns of some errors that are next to the per-son's name in question. Find and fix errors that are associated with dates, ages and any missing information. Enhanced Timeline View: Will give a timeline of your person's events along with their family, whether it is the spouse, the parents or the children. Will display a graphic timeline of the person's events. Will edit the names and events right from the timeline view.

Using Roles to Manage Multiple Marriages

We often find the need to record information about individuals with more than one marriage. The Master Genealogist (TMG) allows you to create an unlimited number of marriage tags to record these events, so the straightforward approach would seem to be to simply enter a new tag for each additional marriage. But this approach, if you use the standard Sentence Structures, can result in a less than satisfactory account in reports, along the lines of:
She married John Smith 25 Jan 1853 in Johnson City. She married Sam Jones 3 Mar 1861. She married Roger Ward in Rush Creek.
One can modify the Sentence Structures of the individual Marriage Tags manually to avoid this. However an easier solution, in my view, is to create some custom Roles for your Marriage Tag Type. Then, when you encounter a sec-ond or third marriage, you just select the appropriate Role with a mouse click or two. If you are unfamiliar with the use of Roles see Roles Tutorial.
Here is how I modified the standard Marriage Tag to solve this problem. I left the standard Sentence Structures for "Principal," "Witness," "Bride," and "Groom" unchanged. I added the following new Roles, with the Sentence Struc-tures shown:
Note that when you enter two Marriage Tags for the same two Principals, only one of them can be made Primary. As a result, this solution works only with report types that can include non-primary Tags, such as the Journal and other narrative reports. Even then you must not use the "Primary Tags Only" option. The second marriage will not appear in reports that can use only Primary Tags, such as the Indented Descendent Chart, Pedigrees, and box charts.

Use: Enter the bride and groom as Principals, as usual.
When you know that for either (or both) Principals this is a second or later marriage, click on the drop-down arrow to the left of the ID Number of that person in the marriage tag, and select the appropriate Role.
If you have marked one or both Principals as having had more than one marriage, go to the first marriage of that person and change that person's Role to "First."
Once you have changed the Marriage Tag Type to add these roles, you can not only use it for new marriages you enter, but you can also go back to existing Marriage tags and apply the new roles to them as well
Notes: I've used the traditional language of "married first," "married second," etc. You can of course mod-ify these sentences so they appear any way that pleases you.

1.In Family Tree Maker, go to File > Export and change the Output format to GEDCOM 5.5. Click OK and OK again. Click Save.
2. In Legacy Family Tree (download free at www.LegacyFamilyTree.com): Go to File > Import > GEDCOM file *Click the Select button, select the GEDCOM file you created in step 1, and click Open. *Click the Start the Import button.

12 Steps to Genealogical Fitness by Lisa A. Alzo, M.F.A.
Is your genealogy in shape? Now you may think this is a silly question. When we
hear the phrase “in shape” we automatically associate it with our physical health. So,
what could these two concepts—“fitness” and “genealogy”—possibly have in com-
mon?
Like millions of others, one of my New Year’s resolutions for 2016 is to become more physically fit. Another is to become a more dedicated and effective genealogist.
As I approach my physical fitness and genealogical research goals, I observe many similarities.
First of all, just as physical fitness is accomplished by exercising your body, success as a genealo-
gist often requires exercising your mind. Secondly, the preparation for each activity is often paral-
lel. You need to warm up, stretch, sometimes hit the ground running, feel the exhilaration of activi-
ty, and then, cool down. Often, you start off with a bang—you have the best of intentions that ex-
cite you and initially spur you on. With a regular physical workout, you lose a few pounds and
your clothes fit better; with genealogy, you discover a detail about an ancestor. You feel great.
Then, it happens. You hit a brick wall. Your weight loss stalls. You search for further information
on your ancestor, but fail to find that one record that will confirm your assumptions (the court
house did not have the birth or marriage record; the church your ancestor attended burned down
and the records were lost in the fire, etc.). You begin to get discouraged and want to pack it in.
“Is it really worth it, anyway?” Then you make excuses: “I don’t have the time. “It’s too difficultH”
and so on.
Both activities require a great deal of hard work and also have similar obstacles. So I have identified 12 steps to use as a guideline for working on my personal fitness and my family’s genealogy.
Set realistic goals – When starting any new project or endeavor like a diet or exercise regi-
men, or a genealogical quest, it is important to set realistic goals, and develop a workable
timetable. You typically would not try to run 10 miles, or expect to lose 50 lbs. right away.
And, whether you are a novice or a seasoned genealogist, you typically would not set out
to research multiple family lines at once, or plan to write your entire family history in a
month. Rather, you should aim to set shorter, more attainable goals. For example, with
your fitness program you could seek to lose 1-2 lbs. per week, or do at least 20 minutes of
exercise each day; with your genealogy, you might attempt to trace one ancestor as far
back as you can before moving on to another, or thoroughly search one particular online
database, or explore one new print resource per week.

Devise a schedule and stick to it – With our busy lives, most of us have to schedule time
to exercise, and this same discipline should be applied to genealogy. Whether you use
a traditional paper calendar, an online calendar software program, or app, blocking off
time in your daily schedule for your research is often the best way to ensure that you will
actually do it. This time may be in the early morning or late at night while everyone else
in your house is still asleep, or maybe during the time the kids are at soccer practice.
Also, take into consideration your own body’s natural clock—what time of day do you
feel your best to do your most efficient work? Perhaps you are a morning person, or on
the other hand, a night owl, or you prefer to work in the mid-afternoon. Follow your body
clock and reserve some time during your “peak” periods to work on your genealogy.
Some of us are “weekend genealogists,” while others work on our family history on a
daily basis. Either way, the important point is to devise a schedule that suits you and
make an effort to keep your commitment.
Make time for a check-up – While it is important to schedule an annual appointment with
your physician to evaluate or reassess your physical health, it is also a good idea to
make an appointment with yourself to take a “research inventory.” Set aside a day or
two to just peruse over your findings to date. Then make a list of missing information
and devise a strategy or “research plan.”
Trim the fat and toss out the junk – When you begin a weight management program, you
often hear that you must “Clean out your cupboards,” “Toss out junk food,” and replace
your vices with healthier food choices. Apply this approach to genealogy. Do you really
need five copies of Aunt Betty’s passenger list record? What about all those miscellane-
ous slips of paper that contain notes from your library research? Go through your family
history files and purge what you don’t need. Face it, filing is the least interesting part of
family history, but it is an essential component. When possible, try to store data—
information, photos, etc., electronically (with back-ups, of course) to cut the paper clut-
ter. Use binders to store printed information. File and label miscellaneous items that
you might need “somewhere down the road7” Organize your workspace so that you
can maximize your time researching and not pushing papers from one area of your desk
to another.
Diversify your tasks – Engaging in the same type of exercise day after day can often lead
to boredom and frustration. In the same way, genealogical tasks can also seem tedious
and even at times exasperating. Instead, strive to make your search fun and challeng-
ing throughout the year. One way to do this is to use your calendar as a genealogical
research guide. Schedule your tasks around major holidays. For example, work on mili-
tary records research around Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day, research marriage rec-
ords on Valentine’s Day, and so forth. Note birthdays of relatives or ancestors and con-
duct your research about them on those days. -continued on page 18

Count your steps – Fitness tracking devices are all the rage because they help measure the
number of steps taken per day, the distance/time of the workout, the number of calories con-
sumed, heart rate, etc. How do you measure your progress with your family history? If “must
get organized” is a mantra that you mutter over and over again to yourself, you need to find a
way to account for your steps. Try using a research log to help organize your correspondence
and research data. You can download a free blank Excel template from my website at http://
www.lisaalzo.com/articles/2015/Blank_Research_Log.xlsx. Enter your family information into
a computerized genealogy software program such as Legacy Family Tree http://
www.lisaalzo.com/legacyfamilytree, or RootsMagic http://www.rootsmagic.com. If possible, try
to do one small task toward your research every day, even if you can only spare 15 minutes.
For example, in 15 minutes you can perform a quick search using an online database, draft a
quick letter to a relative, scan an old photograph, or note five questions to ask in your next oral
history interview. When you break your research tasks into smaller, more manageable pieces,
the process is not as overwhelming.
Pick up the pace – Sometimes you can become stagnant both in your exercise routine, and your
genealogical research, and even the slightest increase in activity can help to yield additional
results. Perhaps you are struggling with writing that letter to an overseas’ archive, or hesitate
contacting the parish priest of the church your ancestors attended. Stop procrastinating. Fol-
low the Nike slogan and “Just Do It!” Sometimes in both areas, you may have to work harder
to for a desired result in a limited period of time.
Vary your location – When you exercise, instead of walking on your treadmill, take a walk around
your neighborhood. If you always do your research at your computer or desk, find a change of
scenery. Go to the library or park and take your laptop with you, or plan a research trip to your
ancestor’s town and include a visit a cemetery, travel to Ellis Island, the National Archives in
Washington, DC or the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
Find a buddy – Working out and dieting with a partner provides encouragement, inspiration and
support, especially during those times you want to quit. When researching your roots, try to
find a family member to share the research tasks. If you do not have a family member who
shares your passion for genealogy, then find a buddy. Join a local genealogical or historical
society or ethnic-based research group. Network with other researchers at genealogy confer-
ences and seminars. You can also search Facebook for genealogy groups related to your re-

January/February Recipes
Clam Dip
2 ½ packages cream cheese
2 cans of minced clams – strained (saving juice from 1 can) 1 medium-large onion (chopped fine) Real Horseradish - 1 ½ teaspoon
Tabasco Sauce - 2 drops
Worcestershire Sauce – 4 drops
Garlic Powder – 1-2 shakes
Salt and Pepper to Taste
Lemon Juice – 2 teaspoons
Instructions: Get all ingredients ready. Open cream cheese packages and place in a bowl, and let sit so that it can get soft. Using a spoon, cream the cream cheese and then add the remaining ingredients in the order given. The juice of the clams is used to soften the cream cheese, and also after all is mixed, and it seems heavy. After it is finished and before you put a cover on it, add 2-3 teaspoons on top and let it soak in. Put in the fridge for a couple hours. Then, an hour before you need it, place on the counter to soften a little. Use Triscuits, Wheat Thins or whatever cracker you like.
This recipe was from my oldest sister, Bonnie. When I was growing up, we use to tease Bonnie on her cooking skills. She would and could burn water. So, after her Lupus was in remission, she took up cooking as a hobby. In her free time, she would putz in the kitchen and low and behold, she came up with some good recipes. This one is one of my favorites. Even reading it, I get teary eyed. She died right before her 41st birthday.
½ lbs. soft, sweet butter 1 ¾ cups granulated suger ½ cups heavy cream
2 eggs, beaten
½ tsp.vanilla extract 1 Tbsp. Brandy
2 egg yolks, beaten
Colored sugar or nuts
Heat oven to 375 degrees.
Sift together the first three ingredients. Mix until creamy, then add the butter, sugar, cream and eggs. Add the flour mixture; and mix well. Add vanilla and brandy; then chill overnight. On lightly floured surface, roll dough (only half at a time) to about 1/8” thickness. Cut with fancy cutters. Place on cookie sheets 1/2” apart. Brush with yolks and add colored sugars or nuts. Bake for about 20 minutes or until done.
This recipe was my great grandmother’s Christmas Cookie Recipe. Although I do not remember much of my great-grandmother, Susan, I do remember that we use to go and see her at the nursing home. The only one she recognized was me. They figured that I must have reminded her of herself. She died in 1967. I typed this recipe the way that she had written it quite a while ago. You will noticed some of the words that she used, like fancy cutters and colored sugars.
These cookies are really good. I am not sure if there would be any altitude problems, because I have not made them since moving out here, which has almost been 15 years ago. Now, that I have found this recipe again, I am going to make them. We don't need a holiday to make cookies, now do we? You know, I married the cookie monster. No, not really, but Tom really loves cookies.

I love to think about the trips I’ve taken. I found this craft and thought it would a great office or den piece. United States Maps are available at Office Depot for about $13. Make cop-ies of your travel photos and cut into the shape of the each state.
Telling Stories.....this was again the theme at this year’s RootsTech 2016. We research to great lengths to discover our ancestor's sto-ries. Some of the missing links can be found by interviewing our cousins, aunts, and uncles or other family members. But, what about our own stories. Have you passed your stories on to your children or grandchildren? Where can your stories be found?
A site that has interested me is Storyworth. This site is not free. It emails me a weekly question. For instance, "What is your favorite memory of your grandmother?" These answers are then compiled, titled and can be printed in a book or copied into Microsoft Word. I am also fascinated by the stories written by family on Facebook. There is now an app that will take your Facebook photos and posts and print them in a book. This runs $24. It organizes the photos and pages for you. You have the option to edit if you wish. The second program is called JRNL. JRNL.com is an online collabora-tive journal that can help you record, preserve, reflect and publish your family history. You can add stories via web, mobile and even email entries to your journal, making sharing your family stories an even easier part of your everyday activity. Journal entries are backed up securely and can be accessed on all your devices. JRNL makes it simple to preserve your family stories in a hard-bound book with their Publishing platform. The cost is free for online journaling.

HAS YOUR DATA BEEN HACKED?

There is nothing worse than having your computer hacked. A friend of mine was one of the “lucky” ones to have this happen. What started out as a normal day, quickly turned bad. My friend had just purchased a new laptop and was so excited to have a day off to play with it.
She turned on the computer and an alert popped up and said her files had been locked due to some ille-gal activity. This was interesting, since she never had turned it on before this day. As she was trying to wrap her head around this, she noticed that there was a picture of her, (yes her) that was taken with her own webcam. There is a letter demanding that she pay $400. to get her computer back.
Usually hackers will send you an email with an at-tachment or a website URL. They tell you to click on it. Hopefully, you don't. Because once you do, they gotcha. All your data is gone. They will usually give you a deadline as to when you need to have the money. And, like I said, if you don't pay them, unfor-tunately, they will use malicious software to get into your files.
Our government has said that ransomware is up to 165% in the first three months of 2015. This is a scary figure. This is not just about laptops and desktops, but also tablets and smartphones. Even our governments and businesses are included in this percentage.
The best way that we can protect ourselves is to be smart while we are on our laptop or desktop, phone or tablet. Only open an attachment if you know where it came from. If it comes from a company, that we know, then go to their website and down-load whatever they have for you. Keep your security software up to date. Also, keep your antivirus soft-ware and pop up blockers installed and up-to-date.
My friend was the lucky one, because it was brand new, she called the place where she bought it and they told her to bring it back and they gave her a new one and they told her they would deal with the hacker(s). They did and the ones that hacked into her computer are now locked up in the federal peni-tentiary.
WINDOWS AND FILE HISTORY

If you use Windows, did you know that it has a feature called File History. File History can make a backup of your data. Many people believe that File History can only be used as a restore fea-ture. This is not true. Yes, it does restore your data, but it can also make a backup. However, to use this, you are going to have to have an exter-nal hard drive.
This is how to get your File History up and run-ning: First, you need to connect your external hard drive to your computer and then open up Settings from the Start page and go to where it says, “Update and Security”, and then “Backup”. When you get there, go to where it says, “Add a Drive,” which is listed under the Backup. This is where using File History will add your external drive.
To Configure your File History: While you are there, go to “More Options” De-cide how often you want it to run your backup; how long you want to keep your copies; and which files that you want to backup.
To Restore your Files: Open up your Settings and go to “Update and Security”; Select “Backup”, and then “More Op-tions”. Scroll down until you get to “Restore files from current backup.” Your restored files will pop up and then you decide which ones you want to be restored. If you are not sure which one is which, right click on the file and it will show you what is in there.
Windows 10 lets you create a system image backup which will give you a full copy of your operating system. This is not the best way to back up your files, but it will work if you only need/want to restore from previous versions once in a while. Microsoft says that by using the File History way, it will give you more backups of your files, if you ever need to restore your files.

Family Tree Maker Update

Ancestry sold FTM to Mackiev Software. Mackiev is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. The technical de-partment is located in Kiev, Ukraine. Mackiev has converted a number of Windows programs including Print Shop, Mavis Bacon Typing and Family Tree Maker. Their web site indicates sales Worldwide.
As originally announced by Ancestry on March 1, MacKiev offered the FTM 2014 latest version as a download. FTM Version 14 is available with one-month subscription to Ancestry.com US Records for $69.95 @ MacKi-ev.com.
Ancestry.com announced it will provide technical support for FTM through 2016. Ancestry stated that Mackiev will maintain the link and seamless download of Ancestry.com indexed data and a JPEG of the records: U.S. and British Census reports, Vital Records, Obituaries, etc.
Family Tree Maker automatically links your file with Ancestry.com, and continuously updates the links to records in the Ancestry Catalog as it grows. This includes the User Family Files “Member-submitted Files”. These files are those sent to Ancestry.com by users syncing their trees (unless synced as Private or Private and do not search). FTM allows the user to mark read and downloaded data so that the user may reduce hits to new ones.
Today, a Help Agent at Ancestry.com unofficially informed me that Ancestry is working to provide this link and download feature for Roots Magic.
This feature of finding appropriate records, downloading the indexed data directly into the user’s Gen File is unique and extremely useful. I will demonstrate this at our April 16 workshop.
I have increased the time spent to use the many powerful FTM edit features to update my FTM trees and make necessary corrections. We will also cover edit features at the April Workshop.
In addition to the FTM Companion Guide (available on the download disk or in print), there is an excellent Guide for Advanced Users: FTM Beyond The Basics, V. 12, by Tana L. Pedersen. Ms. Pedersen has written the User’s guide since 2007. For heavy users of FTM, I recommend Beyond the Basics which is still available at Ama-zon.com The inventory, however, is dropping daily. Note that this book was written for v. 12 not 14, but the infor-mation is 100% applicable to v.14. Beyond the Basics covers more of the edit and update features than the FTM Companion Guide.

Family Tree Maker Place Data, Entry, Editing and Use

Defining our personal practices deserves considering traditions in genealogy and also how we want to use place data in our end product reports. It is useful to write down our own data entry and editing standards, a personal style guide. Some of my place name style issues follow.
We try to avoid implying data is more certain than it is. Any tentative place entries, useful in searches, needs a caveat. Similarly to a tentative date caveats “about” or “between __ and __”.
Populated place names and political entities and boundaries come and go over time.
- If the place name at time of event has changed enter the old place name in description with a more stable modern place name.
- Place description can also be used to enter street address, names of church, hospital, cemetery, earlier name and date of name change, and other place related data.
- A short place name can be useful in some outputs like charts.
- Latitude and Longitude coordinates can be entered in FTM by finding the place and placing a pin on map or aerial image with your cursor. This discipline helps verify the place.
- Map outputs using the coordinates are currently limited.
- Family Tree Maker has lists of place names and a user can add place names by marking a new name with “ignore error”.
- Place names can be for several overlapping layers, rural town/township, hamlet-village-city and county-
borough-parish, state and country. Names that look different may simply be using different terms, one may cite a village, another a township.
- Names of subdivisions of geographic areas like precinct, election district, ward, zip code, school districts, territory, and treaty areas are temporary and may also have fluid boundaries as settlement develops. Old maps show Pennsylvania border north of the central New York.
Editing Place data
- Edit place names after periods of adding data, like merging census data and images so that people with events at a place are together under the correct place name.
- Use the Resolve Place Name function to find place names not in a basic recognized list or added by a user. Fix any misspellings, incomplete or extraneous terms, and typos, with functions like change name, or replace with the correct name.
- Be cautious about options for changing multiple place names at once: change one or all entries from X to Y; move place name entry to place description; replace one entry with another entry which is correct.
- Find a place on FTM Bing map/image, a mapping program and Google can help.
User options for place names in reports and charts include:
- place name with or without place description
- Long or short place name
- Place name with or without the place description
Consider your desired report-chart-books-database outputs and define your standards and apply these to your data and entry practices. Place names are just one kind of data, you can also establish your own practices for dates, names, events, source citations, etc. Consistent data entry enhances the end products. Genealogy soft-ware vendors should have tools to help organize and edit data. FTM provides tools for finding and editing place data, several were demonstrated at the February workshop.

Roots Magic 7

I am often asked about how to get rid of extra people that have popped up in our databases. If you have made a GEDCOM (like from Ancestry or another family tree) and imported it into your genealogy database, then yes, you would have more people listed in your database.
Here is how to check if you have duplicates:
Go to Tools, click on Merge, and then choose which Merge you want to use. There are four Merges that you can choose from: Smart Merge, Share Merge, Manual Merge, and View ‘Not Duplicates’ List.
The first one is: SMART MERGE. This one will search for duplicates, and then it will give you a score. This score is based on names, birthdates, christening, death, burial and others. It will then automatically merge the records for you.
The second one is: SHARE MERGE. You would use this option if your family also uses RootsMagic. You would make a GEDCOM of your database and then send it to your family. They then would download it into their database, and they could work on what you have. They could make changes, and they can also edit it. They would then send you back the GEDCOM for you to import back into your program. Granted, there would be a lot of duplicates, as you all would have some of the same information. There would also be some new ones or ones that were edited. RootsMagic would go through the list and it already knows which one you started out with because it assigned an ID to it. Then, it would download the ones that you do not have or the ones that had differences.
The third option is: MANUAL MERGE. This option lets you merge your duplicates one at a time.
The fourth option is: VIEW “NOT DUPLICATES” LIST. This option is a list of your pairs that you have listed as not being a duplicate. You can remove the pairs that are not duplicates.

Reunion 11—List—Nav Bar

We can discuss anything you feel you need. If you have a particular problem or function you’d like demonstrated please in-clude that in your email saying you’re coming. My email: [email protected].
In version 11, Reunion has added a button on the Nav Bar called Lists. Why add a special Nav Bar category when the Sidebar is already has lists? There are times that I have wanted to have 2 or more lists accessible while I’m working. I may be searching for something in particular and also want to correct another list or use the sources list while I’m viewing. It can get to be annoy-ing to have to switch back and forth through the various lists on the Sidebar. The Sidebar is used mainly for navigation or searching and gives you minimal details on that list. Just enough to help you find a specific person or item in the list. The List Window which is opened by the Lists icon in the Nav Bar can display a lot more information and help you organize it in any spreadsheet type format you would like. It is also opened in a separate window that you can resize or move where you want it.
In addition there are a few categories that are different in the Sidebar and the Nav Bar Lists. Sidebar allows you to see Multimedia you are using and/or wish to add, a listing of Ages for the displayed people, Bookmarks you have chosen for people you frequently want displayed, Treetops which is a listing of that furthest generation back for each of your lines, Clipboard to show things you’ve deleted, Reminders which displays upcoming events for living people, and Islands which is a listing of groups of people who are not con-nected to the main tree of people. The Lists window menu allows you to see Events, Couples, and Feasibility. Both will show People, Sources, Relatives, Places, Results, Calendar and Contacts.
When you open a List window, your data will come up in a spreadsheet format that can be ma-nipulated with whatever you wish displayed and how you want it displayed and sorted. You can change how many columns you have, change what information is shown in each column, sort on any of the categories, mark cards from the list and search for certain information or groups. The electronic Manual which comes with Reunion is extremely helpful in describing how to do all of these functions. When you have a List window open, click on the ? in the lower left corner and it will open the section of the Manual directly related to List windows in general. It explains how to change the display to show whatever it is you want. If you want information on a specific

Sidebar or List, you should go to the main Apple Menu Bar and click Help>Contents. This opens up the Table of Contents where you can find the link to specific information about a particular list.
Events List The Events List contains a list of events for people in your database. In this listing you will see the Name of a person associated with the event, the type of Event (birth, death, marriage, census, etc.), Date of the event for that person, Age of the person at the time of event, the Place associated with the event and the Memo field associated with the event. Once in the List you can select the gear icon at the bottom to get choices of All, Marked or Unmarked people, what to include in the way of incomplete dates or lack of place listings, and select which events you want listed. You cannot choose the column-categories. You can rearrange the order they occur. You can also select the column to use for sorting.
Couples List This is obviously a listing of the “couples” in your database regardless of marriage sta-tus. Commonly it opens with Family Name, Marriage Date and # of Children. Once you have done some customizing on a list it will probably open up the last used for-mat. I have not yet tried this particular function to see if this is true. This list enables choosing how many columns you want with a variety of choices for column headers. Your column choices generally deal with fields relating to the couple rather than the individual. You can select the Marked icon to help narrow down your list if you have a marked set you wish to see. There was an article on Marking in the March/April 2014 CIG newsletter. That discussion still applies to Reunion 11.
Feasibility, its uses and setup, was covered in the November-December 2015 CIG newsletter. I look forward to hearing from the Reunion users about having an April workshop. Please let me know before the beginning of April.

Our Recipe and Craft Section

OATMEAL-JELLY BARS
This is a very easy recipe that I am surprised that my grandmother actually made. She was one that baked all the time and her recipes were usually long.
Ingredients: 2 cups rolled oats
1 cup flour ¾ cup brown sugar ¼ tsp salt ¾ cup shortening
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix all ingredients together. Take oleo or butter and wipe the sides and the bottom of a 9 x 9 square pan. Then add half of the mixture into the pan. Spread 1 cup of Jelly on top of the mixture. Then add the rest of the mixture.
Bake for 25 – 30 minutes. Cool and cut into bars. Tastes great with a cup of coffee or tea.
S.O.S. When I was growing up my mother would make this for lunch. Now, I make it for my dad and my husband for either lunch or dinner.
Ingredients: Butter 1 stick
Flour Milk
Salt and Pepper (to taste) Dried Beef 3-4 pkgs
Bread or Toast
This is where the recipe gets interesting. It even does now when I make it.
Put 1 stick of butter in a saucepan. Let it melt. Slowly add flour (the amount is up to you), but you will be adding until it looks thick and mucky. Then slowly add milk. Pour until it gets thick. Then add Salt and Pepper. Cut the dried beef up and add to the mix-ture. Let the beef warm for a minute or two. While the beef is warming up, put the bread in the toaster. When the toast is done, place it on a plate and add the dried beef mixture and ENJOY.

Generations Portrait
Do you have several generations in your family? What a nice way to merge their photos. First, take a photo of the two youngest generations. Then, the next generation holding that photo, and so on.
Photo Display
To create a distinctive display of photos, use unexpected flea market finds such as: plates, mirrors, trays, silver platters, soap dishes. Never use original photos. Scan your photos and prints on heavy paper. Scan old photos into your computer, or snap new ones with your digital camera. Print them and cut them out. Mount them using archival glue or double-stick archival tape. These are both available at craft stores. Hang with mounting tape or attach a hanging bracket with epoxy.

Well, it is time for me to step down as President of the Computer
Interest Group. My term ends after four years as your President. It
has been more than a privilege to meet all of you and get together
each month to improve our knowledge of genealogy. It’s been a
challenge to keep up with you all as many members are expert re-
searchers having done this for many years. With 8 ½ years under
my belt I, at times, feel I know very little. But isn’t that how it is with
anything. The more proficient you become, the more you don’t
know.
Yes, I can sit at home and watch webinars and great speakers
while sitting in front of my desktop computer. But there isn’t any-
thing that can replace a group of like-minded people getting togeth-
er to discuss their research and learning something new together.
Advancements always come quicker in a group.
That reminds me of a class I took from the visionary Jean Houston
many years ago. As a group we can expand our knowledge at an
accelerated rate, more so than if we do it alone. Look at all the vol-
unteers gathering data and indexing. Family Search alone had
122,985 contributors in 2015.
I was looking at some old Newsletters. We have one of the nicer
newsletters any genealogy group could hope for with Lynette Dick
as our Editor. Do you know in the last eight years we have had the
following speakers? (The last two years have been joint seminars
with The Colorado Genealogical Society and CIG):
Dick Eastman, Drew Smith, George Morgan, Dan Lynch, Thomas
McEntee, Pamela and Rick Sayre, Cyndi Ingle and CeCe Moore. I
would say the above is a superstar list.
After attending RootsTech for four years now and listening to many
speakers, I am excited about the future of genealogy. I will present
some of my projections at our May 21st meeting. I am looking for-
ward to it. I hope all of you can attend.
I hope to continue as a workshop leader in the future. Until then,
don’t hurt yourself breaking through those brick walls. Those an-
cestors are patiently waiting for you on the other side.

Don’t miss our own Genealogy Roadshow at our mem-bership meetingon May 21st. After researching three fi-nalists, I chose to present the Ancestors of Samantha Ramey. She has an interesting mix going back seven generations. I will explore both her paternal and maternal lines back 6 generations. I will take a look at her Ances-try DNA results and then explore some very interesting ancestors and their stories. With over 60 hours of re-search, I will reveal ancestors that our guest, Samantha Ramey, has not heard of, or even knew existed. Her an-cestry is impressive. How about her 6th great Grandfa-ther George McPherren, born in Ireland in 1786? This is just one of a few we will investigate. I will close the pro-gram with some information I discovered that will be a surprise to all including our guest.

A Genealogical Brain Exercise

How many direct ancestors do you have? Multiplying each generation by two, is very te-dious. Eventually our numbers get muddled. The algebraic formula is 2n = x. "n" is the number of generations back and "x" equals the number of individuals in that generation. For example targeting my 5th great-grandparents. They are 7 generations back. Using the formula, this makes "one hundred twenty-eight" 5th great-grandparents. Let's take it further... How many cumulative ancestors do I have up to that point? Adding up the cu-mulative direct ancestors for 7 generations in my head. "me + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 + 64
+ 128 = 255"
There must be an easier way, and there is! I found a wonderful web site that charts the generations back with the number of individuals in each generation, and the cumulative
According to the chart, we have over 4 trillion 30th great-grandparents who lived roughly
in the 990's. Our cumulative direct ancestors to that point equals 8,589,934,591.
The chart explains it's doubtful we have 30 generations of unique ancestors. There will be numerous repetitions of ancestors appearing throughout our pedigree. So, our totals
will be much less.
I can do this brain exercise with the single digit generations, beyond that, this chart is a wonderful tool. I keep it handy to impress my non genealogical friends. The fact is, we have a mind boggling number of ancestors, especially if we add aunts, uncles and cous-ins. We just don't know them all by name yet. . . . Maybe we are all related to Alexander the Great.

Create a Genealogical Photo Board on Pinterest

For quite some time I have been trying to solve a major problem I have which is what to do with all my old photographs. When I published my first family history a couple of years ago, I only included a few Hysaw family photos. The number I put in the book doesn’t even make a dent in the
many pictures I have. I never had the nerve to actually count them!
I come by this photo archives honestlyK.my Grandaddy Hysaw was a professional photog-rapher who worked for the Signal Corps at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. His son, my uncle, worked there al-so, and my mother worked at Call’s Studio when she was young, learning to tint photos and do oth-
er studio work.
When we were growing up, Grandaddy Hysaw was the official photographer for all events on both sides of our family, the Hysaws, Currells, and Steins, which eventually included a total of 10 children. Grandaddy also was an amateur photographer of the first orderK.he loved to go to the nearby Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge and spend the day with his camera photographing any-thing of interest: rock formations, tree stumps, buffalo, whatever caught his eye. He then processed
the film in his photo lab, which was a small building behind the house at 302 Summit in Lawton.
In addition he made excellent copies of all the old photos he had of his and my grandmoth-
er, Ruth’s, relatives. He sent copies to me and all the other grandkids in his later years.
I have all the photos of my parents and my grandparents. I have Kodachrome, Kodacolor slides and prints, black and white prints, studio portraits and Brownie snapshots. And, that’s just from the Hysaw side. The Hysaws are my mother’s family. My dad’s family includes the Currells, Walkers, and Steins. His relatives also generously shared with me their old photos. In addition I am the curator for my kids’ ancestors too as I have all of the Alexander and Hollis family photos courte-
sy of my ex-husband!
I have treasured these photos with their precious memories and distributed them to all inter-ested parties for the past 35 years. But now, what do I do with them?? I have been thinking in par-ticular about the Hysaw, Hisaw, Highsaw photos. Many people sent me copies of their old photos when I was the editor of the Hisaw Family Newsletter for 13 years. I put the photos in the newslet-ter, but since it was just a Xeroxed publication, the photos in the newsletter were of a poor quality. The newsletter ceased publication in 2000. Should I publish a photo book with those in them? It
seemed like too big a project, and many of the photos weren’t my own. What to do, what to do?
Last summer I was watching a webinar on Legacy Family Tree.com titled “Pinning Your Family Tree” by Thomas MacEntee. As I sat there, he showed his many genealogical sites on Pin-
terest, and I saw the answer to my quandaryK.of course, Pinterest!
I browsed the site, but never actually used it, so I decided I would give it a try. It could not be easier. It is free, extremely easy to use. All you do is set up an account on their site, www.pinterest.com. The first thing you do is hit the red “Join Pinterest” button. I used my e-mail to set up my account, but you can use Facebook and Twitter if you wish. There is no fee, and it is
open to anyone.

Then, start adding pictures. For the first one see the + button in the lower part of the screen. The pic-tures must be available on your computer. Most of my Hysaw pictures I scanned in, then I added to my Pinterest board the ones I wanted. I also went to Google Images and found photos some of which were new to me by Googling the various spellings Hysaw, Hisaw, Highsaw, and Hyso. The images are availa-ble to the public. All I did was find an image, click, and a little “Pin It” sign appears. Then I clicked to add
it to my board.
Many sites, such as Ancestry, are compatible with Pinterest. For example, if I find a Hysaw photo on a public tree or in the Pictures section of Ancestry, I click on it, click the Pin It button, and it’s added to my selected board. For identifying all images, I click on the image when it’s on my board and a little icon of a pencil appears. I click on that, and I put a short description and name of the owner of the picture. I did not contact each owner for permission, but if anyone objected, then I would remove the photo at once. No
one has objected.
Here is an example of a description I used in the caption of one photo: Sarah Jane Simms McCoy, wife of Solomon McCoy, daughter of Zed Sims and Sarah Hisaw Sims, 1843-1913, Fayette, TX.

I located the mailing list that I used when I wrote my book. It contained e-mail addresses of people researching the Hysaw families of whom I used to send out the newsletter. Using my e-mail account, I sent out a group message telling everyone interested they could view all the Hisaw pictures I have. I thought they would be interested since I realized that I am the only who has all pictures from all branches of the various Hisaw families. My Pinterest board is public which I chose when I set it up. Anyone who wishes can view it. I only used photos of people who are deceased, so no one’s privacy was at risk. If the people who are using the board want to be part of my group, they click a button and they get notified
when I add a photo. They can also click on the photo and save it to their computer if they wish.
I did not use any fancy frames or backgrounds which you can do on Pinterest if you wish. I did, however, become interested in other items such as maps, pictures of deeds, emblems of states where the families lived, old buildings associated with the families, images of wars in which they served etc. I found those on my computer and also on Google Images. Nearly any image on the Internet can be saved
to your Pinterest board.
I had so much fun doing this and it could not, as I said, be easier. I plan to create boards for other families and invite relatives to see them also. None will be as large as this Hysaw board because I do not have as many photos from any other families. But, this gives me the satisfaction of knowing I have distrib-
uted these old photos to those who have an interest, and that is my goal.

section type: Hysaw, Hisaw. It will take you there. Try it. I think you will like it!

3. I own an older version of Family Tree Maker. Can I get a discount on an upgrade? Yes! 10. Where will Family Tree Maker be sold?
Currently, the new FTM Mac and Windows editions will be sold through their online store (both down-loads and physical discs will be available) and through other online resellers such as Amazon.com, and the Mac App Store.
11. Will Software MacKiev be supporting Family Search?
Yes. They’ll be implementing Family Search in future versions of Family Tree Maker. Ancestry had actu-ally started implementing Family Search some time ago in both Mac and Windows versions. The folks at Family Search have already reached out to them and they hope to have Family Search in FTM ver-sions by the end of 2016.
12. What about TreeSync? Will we still be able to keep our trees in synch with the tree we have on An-cestry.com?
As Ancestry has announced, you will continue to be able to access your data through TreeSync through December 31, 2016 using current versions of Family Tree Maker. After January 1, 2017, while TreeSync will not be supported by Ancestry for the version you have now, you will still be able to access your trees on Ancestry.com and keep your online tree consistent with the one on FTM through new technologies being developed together by Software MacKiev and Ancestry.
13. Do I need to re-register with Software MacKiev?
No, you do not need to re-register with Software MacKiev for your software to continue working. You might want to sign up for their mailing list to find out about new product introductions and upgrades.
14. Where should FTM users go for technical support?
Software MacKiev now supports all versions of Family Tree Maker for Mac, as well as all users of our new FTM 2014.1 for Windows. Ancestry provides support for all other Windows versions, including the original FTM 2014 release.
15. I am moving to a new computer. Will I need to transfer my FTM copy there before upgrading?
No. If you are a registered user of an older version of Family Tree Maker, you will get a freestanding in-staller for your new computer, so the old version does not need to be present.
16. Will the new Software MacKiev version erase my old one? Will it delete my old trees and files?
If you are updating from FTM 2014 to version 2014.1, you will get an option to replace your old version with the new one (and this is recommended). But in all other cases, including upgrading your Mac 3 ver-sion to 3.1, the installer ignores your older version completely, and in any case none of our installers will not touch any of your saved files.

Reunion 11—List—Nav Bar

I am sorry that we did not get to meet in April. There were a few of you who contacted me via email to express interest. I will be happy to try again at the workshop meeting in June if people are still interested in this.
When Reunion 11 came out, one of the new features that I pointed out in the introduction article was the Islands Sidebar. I have been asked a few times, “Why would I need that?” Some peo-ple may not work the same way I do. I have gotten gedcoms from other researchers. I usually open them independently in their own file. I then work from that to weed out what I do or don’t want before I make an attempt to attach that file to my main file. I don’t know what those people have done, so it would be nice to know if there are the odd people or lines sitting in there that are not attached to the line I want. I certainly don’t want to “add” them to mine if they are not appropriate.
That’s one instance. Then there’s the way I research. I have people I come across that “might” be related or that I want to research more on to decide if they should be attached. I don’t really want a bunch of odd Reunion files with 3 or 4 people in them cluttering up my computer where I can’t locate them or don’t remember what they are. So I have used the Menu Bar> Edit, and clicked on Add Unrelated Per-son. You can choose male, female or unknown. For ex-ample, the direct records between the Revolutionary War and about 1830 are very scarce for northern New Jersey. I am trying to connect my ggg-grandfather, Thomas Hammond to his possible grandfather, Thomas Hammond, Revolutionary War soldier. So I have collect-ed all the Hammonds I could find for the period 1750 and 1830 in Paterson, New Jersey and the surrounding area. Surprisingly, there aren’t that many. They will come up as an island of their own. If I can collect enough indirect evidence, at some point I would have a case study that would link them into my family very eas-ily. If I find that they are not a fit, I can mark them and then delete them in a group.

For whatever reason, you should be interested in at least seeing what Islands says about your database. I have about 16,000 people in my database now (40 years of research plus what I’ve obtained from others). I find myself at times the “central repository” of researchers working on a given line of family. People send me things because I have a web-site online (which Reunion made for me). They give me per-mission to add their work to mine online. I always try to cite them. So the file has gotten rather large. When I first looked at Islands it looked like the listing to the upper right which says I have 61 islands! Notice that the first one is the main one with 16,000+ people in it. When you click on an Island, a listing of the actual people in that island will show up on the bottom of the sidebar below the list (see left). When you see the listing you can click on one of the people who will then show up in your Family View. Or, handily, if you click on the Island then click Tree View in the Nav Bar it will show you all the odd people in a chart and you can see how they are re-lated to each other.
Once you have figured out what or who this island rep-resents, click on it again to get the highlighted name-
change bar, and you can type in a better description of the Island for better recall later. Or you can decide you don’t want them, mark them using the green check-
mark at the bottom of the Sidebar and delete them. Af-ter you have gone through and renamed the lists (example right), you will more easily be able to see what you might need to do with these people.
As with its other features, Reunion has a great Manual to help you through any glitches. Usually I have directed you to the ? in the view to go to the exact section of the Manual. There isn’t one in the Sidebar, and Islands will not detach as a separate window. So to get to this Man-ual, go the the Menu Bar> Help> Contents and click on Islands in the topic “Using Sidebars & Lists.” I should also point out here that under the Help Menu is also a set of Tutorials to get you started using Reunion if that’s where you currently are.
Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones who only has one Island. You don’t have that many people yet, or you have a different work habit. Someday you may still need this function, so it’s nice to know it’s there. Have fun and hope to see you in June!

Roots Magic 7

Hello RootsMagic users and those interested in learning about RootsMagic. I wanted to let you know that since we are starting over from scratch, the articles for RootsMagic will concentrate on what we will work on in our upcoming Workshops. If you can, and do have access to a laptop, tablet or phone that has RootsMagic on it, to bring it to our next Workshop on June 18.
In the meantime, start thinking of what you want your database to be named. Some examples would be like; The Ludwig Family, or Lynette's Family Tree, or whatever you want. Please come with an idea. Also, bring some of your family members that can be added to your Family Tree. We will be adding these to your database.

Issues with Windows 10

Some people have had issues with their Windows 10. Although, they haven't been large issues, they are still annoying, to say the least. One issue that people are having problems with happens when you are doing a Windows update and your com-puter just sits there, like its frozen. Believe it or not, Windows does occasionally send out corrupt files. It happens to the best of companies. Mi-crosoft is not exempt from these issues.
I hope that this has not happened to any one of you, but if it has, there is a fix. Although it is somewhat time consuming, we can fix it without having to take it to the shop and spend a lot of money to have it checked. Here is the fix.
First, click on your Windows key + R. This will open Run. Type in the box: C:\\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, and then OK. You will notice that a folder will pop up on your screen. You need to Delete everything that is inside of this folder. Just make sure that you keep the folder. Once you have finished de-leting everything, you will need to restart your computer, so that the update will start.
Another issue that some people are having is that the computer battery runs out too quickly. Well, let’s face it, there are some computers/laptops/tablets where the battery just seems to run out frequently. You can turn it on and within a couple hours, your battery is down to 15 percent. It seems to happen more frequently with the Win-dows 10 version than the others.
Before you do anything drastic, make sure that your drivers are all up-to-date. Sometimes, they can be part of the problem. If these are all up-to- date, then it could be some of the “New” features that came with Windows 10. For one, “Cortana.” Even though this does not have a big impact on the battery, it does do a little. To fix this, do a sys-tem search for Cortana. When you find it, switch “Let Cortana respond to Hey Cortana to Off.”
Windows update can also drain the battery. It does because it can share the updates you've downloaded with others. To stop this, just click on your Windows key + I. You need to go to Update and Security. While there, go to: “Windows Up-date > Advanced options > Choose how your up-dates are delivered” and then switch it to Off.
I hope these will help you if you ever have an is-sue or would like to preserve your battery.

Our Recipe and Craft Section

Jack-O-Lantern Cookies
While going through my family's recipe books, I was amazed at all of the pieces of paper that were written on, and the recipes that were taken out of magazines and newspapers. This reci-pe of jack-o-lantern cookies caught my eye. The recipe came from a magazine called: This Week Magazine. Dated: 31 October 1954. When I researched this magazine, I found that it was a syndicated Sunday magazine that was included in your newspaper between 1935 and 1969. It was put in 37 different newspapers all over the country. When it went out of business in 1969, and it was the longest-running syndicated newspaper supplement in the United States.
Here is the Recipe:
Filling: 1 cup canned pumpkin ½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup sugar ½ teaspoon ginger ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
Cookies: 2 cups sifted flour 1 egg
1 teaspoon salt ¼ cup molasses
½ teaspoon soda 1 cup rolled oats (quick or old-fashioned, un-cooked) ½ cup brown sugar ¾ cup soft shortening
Mix together pumpkin, sugar, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg for the filling, set aside. Sift flour, salt and soda into a bowl. Add sugar, shortening, egg and molasses; stir until smooth. Blend in rolled oats. Roll out on a lightly floured board to 1/8th inch thickness. Cut into 48 circles using a 2 ½ inch cutter. Place half of the circles on ungreased cooky sheets and place a teaspoon of filling on each, spreading filling lightly in center of cooky. Cut jack-o-
lanterns faces on the other half of circles and lay these over the pumpkin filling, sealing edg-es. From scraps cut pumpkin stems and seal to tops of cookies.
Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes. Yield: 2 dozen cookies.
You will notice how the word “cooky” is spelled. I looked and looked at this recipe and thought that I was seeing things, but it turned out that, this is how “cooky” was spelled. Interesting. I hope you try these, they are quite good. Start checking at 10 minutes.

Interesting Older Household Hints From Milady’s Own Page

Not long ago, I started going through some boxes that had come from my family. There I found a recipe book that came from my Mom's side of the family. I was really impressed with the fact that there were even clippings from newspapers and torn pieces of paper with recipes on it. But, this really caught my eye. Apparently, this woman named Milady (this is her pen name) wrote for a Chi-cago newspaper. I wanted to share these hints with you. Maybe your parents or grandparents or maybe even you have done some of these. These hints were printed in the Chicago Newspaper in 1928.
HOUSEHOLD HINTS
Soak liver in buttermilk for an hour, dip in flour and fry. Try it and see how tasty. (This is interesting because I soak my liver in milk and spices overnight and then fry it up).
The next time you roast a chicken, fasten a sheet of waxed paper with toothpicks to the breast of the chicken. This will prevent burning and drying while it is roasting
Lemon juice added to a piece of tough meat when it begins to boil will make it tender. This will also add a delicious taste to the meat.
Dip bacon in cornmeal before putting on the fire. It will cook and brown better.
Use uncooked oatmeal instead of bread crumbs when making hamburg patties.
When turning a beef roast, use two spoons instead of a fork. The fork is apt to pierce the skin and allow the juices to escape.
If you are planning on serving the roast cold, wrap in damp cheesecloth while it is still hot. It will retain its flavor better.
Before frying sausages, boil them for seven to eight minutes. They will not shrink so much.
The next time you make meatloaf, put in muffin tins. They will not only be more attractive but will bake more quickly.
Put a little vinegar in the fat when frying fish. This will prevent the fish from sticking to the skillet.
Interesting? I have done a few of these and they really do work. Maybe the next time that you cook, give one of these little hints a try.

Facebook “Friend Requests”?
Recently, a timely conversation was started on the CIG Facebook page by our admin-istrator, Linda Hartlaub. It concerns “fake friend requests”. The following is the conver-
sation about this issue:
Linda: “OK folks, we need to talk about something very serious. There is a spoof going around Facebook where scammers are sending out "friend" requests. I have literally had over a hundred requests from men I don't know - all of them "widowers" or "divorced". Men are getting the opposite from women who are widows or divorced. If you click on the "allow" button, you have opened yourself up to someone getting ac-cess to your Facebook account. When you get a friend request, think twice or three or four times before allowing them to be friends. Do you really know this person? And if they are already friends, check with them to see if they are setting up a second Face-book page - most likely their account was hacked. Finally, change your privacy set-
tings so that only friends can see your facebook profile!”
Kelly Glenn: “Follow these steps to LOCK it down so only your friends can see your friends list. Go to your profile. Click Friends below your cover photo. Click at the top of the page and select Edit Privacy from the dropdown menu. Select an audience (ex:
Friends, Public) to choose who you share your friend list with on your profile.”
Linda: “Also to change your privacy settings: On the blue bar at the top of any Face-book page, hover your cursor to the right of the globe (move it around a little bit). You'll find a widget there and the term "Privacy Shortcuts" will appear. Click on that
item on the blue bar and take it from there.”

Hello and Welcome to a new year! I hope that you all had a won-derful summer and had time to work on your Genealogy.
I was born in Illinois, and then moved to Wisconsin when I was 5½. In 1993, my oldest sister passed away. Out of the blue, my other sister started to bug my husband, Tom, and I to move out to Colo-rado. We kept telling her “no.” After some time had passed, we de-cided to come out and check it out. My sister and brother-in-law took us to quite a few places. Of course, these were places that they knew we would love. We still were not sure if we should move or not. In late January 2001, my sister said to me, “You know, you and I are the only two left, and we really don’t know one another (she is five years older).” So, Tom and I talked and decided to move out here in April 2001. Shortly after that, my father also moved to Denver.
Since moving out here, my mother passed away (in Wisconsin) in 2005, my sister passed away in 2012, and my father passed away on June 23 of this year. Besides all of that, my husband has had numerous heart attacks and a stroke. Fortunately for me, he is alive and well.
Many people have asked me, if it was worth it to move out here. I tell them. “Yes.” If we hadn’t moved here, I don’t think that I would have started on my genealogy. I started working on my genealogy after I went to a Family History Fair in Arvada. It amazed me. I was overwhelmed by all the things you could do to find your relatives. After that, I joined CIG. I was just a member when I received a tele-phone call from Sandy Ronayne. Sandy asked me if I wanted to be the Vice President. I thought about it, and then Sandy came to my house and we talked. It’s all history from there. There is one thing that I will always treasure, and that is what my father said. When he would see me on the computer he would say,” Well, I see your working on your dead people stuff.” I would tell him, “Yes I am, but these are your dead people too.”
As you know, technology is always changing. You probably have noticed that when one good genealogy program or gadget comes out, there’s always more to follow. So, you think to yourself, did I make the right purchase, is this going to help me, or will it just con-fuse me? That is why I love this group. We take this new technolo-gy, we look at it, we work with it, we learn all about it, and then we tell others. That’s what makes this group such a great one!

Many are familiar with PBS’s “Genealogy Roadshow. This past
May, I was able to present “CIG’s own Genealogy Road Show.”
This presentation had a profound effect on the family I researched.
They revealed to me later that it was a very emotional experience
for them. From my Facebook posting about the Roadshow, news
spread and interest grew among other family members of Saman-
tha and her mother, Veronica Ramey. The family was able to use
my information at the family reunion they held a few weeks ago in
New Mexico.
Here is some of the information I discovered that the family had
never heard of before my presentation:

PATERNAL GRANDFATHER, DR. DAYNE RAMEY: Intelligence officer for the United States Military. He was a Russian interpreter serving in Alaska. A former college tennis champion, he was an Ophthalmolo-gist practicing in Dallas Texas. He died a mysterious death in 1988.
PATERNAL 6TH
GREAT GRANDFATHER, GEORGE MCPHERRON: Born in 1781 in Bainbridge Ire-
land and immigrated to the US at the age of 18. He was a cooper who is in the trade of making casks,
drums or barrels. He enlisted in the war of 1812 and was a member of the Whig party.
MATERNAL GRANDFATHER DONALD BRUSSEAU: Born 1934 in Cook County, Illinois. Donald’s
Ancestor line was broken as his father was adopted. I was able to reconstruct his lineage through cen-
sus and cemetery records to discover the actual grandparents of Donald Brusseau. The family immi-
grated to Michigan from Canada, just north of Montreal.
PATERNAL 4TH
GREAT GRANDFATHER, CAPTAIN HENRY LAFAYETTE DOGE, 1810-1856: Cap-
tain Dodge was appointed Indian Agent to New Mexico by President Pierce about 1850. He tried to
make peace between the Apaches and Navajo. He was responsible for calming tensions between
the Indians and the Hispanic people of New Mexico. He was burned at the stake November 15,
1856 by the Apaches. The story of Captain Dodge is documented in the Book “Red Shirt, The Life
and Time of Henry Lafayette Dodge.”

GREAT GRANDFATHER, SENATOR HENRY DODGE: Henry Dodge was the fa-
ther of Captain Henry Lafayette Dodge. He was the first Territorial Governor of Wisconsin. When
Wisconsin became a state in 1848, Henry Dodge became the first Senator of that state to the Unit-
ed States Congress. His son Augustus Dodge became the first Senator from Iowa when it became
a state.
President Zachery Taylor asked Henry Dodge to be his running mate as Vice President of the Unit-
ed States. Dodge refused. Zachery Taylor died after one year in office. Had Henry Dodge accepted,
he would have been President of the United States.

It is sad, but true, how these stories get lost and don’t get passed down to the descendants of these great people. I am

Our speaker will be Kellen Cutsforth. His talk will revolve around a little-known benefactor of Buffalo Bill Cody named Evelyn Booth. The talk is not only an entertaining story, but contains relevant research techniques and resources that would be of use to genealogical researchers.
Kellen is an archivist in the Western History and Genealogy Department at the Denver Public Library and is the author of Buffalo Bill, Boozers, Brothels, and Bare-Knuckle Brawlers: An Englishman's Journal of Adventure in America.
Legacy Family Tree

Is your Legacy software up-to-date? Be sure you are using Version 8.0.0.566. Click on File, then file properties to check what ver-sion you are viewing. Update if needed.
Look for a new instruction video on the toolbar. This is a great beginners’ video and also good for the “pro”. I found from the be-ginners’ video that I was entering cemetery information in the incorrect field. Enter the cemetery information by clicking on the “+” next to the burial field, and then entering the cemetery under burial notes.
What is the most important rule for entering locations in Legacy? Enter the location at the time of the event! If the counties changed, enter the county name at the time the event occurred, not the current county name. Legacy software can identify these errors and will prompt you to enter the cor-rect county. This is important when sharing data with others.
Don’t forget to document EVERYTHING with sources when adding information. It takes a little time, but is so necessary.
Don’t forget, you can scan a picture from your personal scanner directly into the me-dia Gallery. This saves a lot of time. It can be done quickly and efficiently.
Make it a point to watch the beginners’ video as mentioned above. It can save you time by preventing mistakes when getting started with Legacy Family Tree.

Fields

With the start of a new CIG year I am happy to note that CIG has changed their format of meetings and workshops which is going to enable me to do both Reun-ion and Scanning. The first software workshop will not be until November, but I plan on being available to answer Reunion questions or present some aspect of the program. Looking forward to seeing Reunion people. For this article, let’s
start off with some basics in Reunion this year. Hopefully I can give beginners some starting points and more advanced users some things you didn’t know about them!
Fields are those boxes you see in the windows that you put your family data in. There are Person Fields: events, facts, notes and flags. These are seen in the Edit window across the top middle. There are different fields for Family: marriage items, events, and notes. There are also Source fields, but they are a special category.
Reunion comes with quite a few pre-set Person fields: 30 Event fields, 24 Fact fields, 4 Note fields and 5 Flag fields. An Event field has 4 parts: type, date, place and memo. A listing of the pre-set types can be found in Preferences>Fields>Person>Events button, or the list will come up if you click on the Add Event Button in the Edit window. Memos on any window are limited to 2,500 characters. Facts fields just have one entry box for any kind of text. They are limited to 255 characters (including spaces). Note fields can have up to 64,000 characters of text making them useful for narrative paragraphs. Flag fields do not have any place for data entry. They are simply there to allow you the capability of sorting or finding certain groups of people. When you checkmark a category it records that with the person.
Family fields include Marriage information which allows a variety of types of unions, or non-unions including Civil Union, Divorce, Common Law, Marriage, Unmarried, Annulment, Domestic Partnership and Separation. These appear as pop-up bars on the Marriage Edit page. You can record the date, place and memo just like the categories for persons. In addition, there are Events just for marriage which could give you places to record Engagements, Divorce Filings, Marriage License dates (which very often are different from the actual marriage date), Separation, Misc. Events, Sealing Spouse (for LDS church), and Residence. You can also add a category like Marriage Banns which were recorded in churches. Family fields also include a Notes field which is useful to transcribe a newspaper article that describes the wedding, or any other unusual notes like whether the father had to give permission.
Most of you will be able to get by with the pre-set categories of fields. But there are always those times when people and events just don’t fit what’s there. What to do? Make a new category. You can do this in the Prefer-ences>Fields. In each category you can click on the button +Add Event (Fact, Note, Flag). It will give you a new box that says New Event which is highlighted. You can type in what you want to call the new event. Then there are some new boxes to fill in which ask for a long abbreviation, the short ones for each part and how you want the narrative form to respond when Reunion writes a report (see right).

Even if you are not interested in making a new field you should look at the Narrative Form (in Preferences, Events only) for each of the different events you are using. Click on the Arrangement pop-up button and see that there are 10 different formats you can choose which are really about the order of wording and the content you want included (see right). Click on each of these choices and take a look at the Sample that shows up a little further on. You will be able to see exactly what the wording on your reports will say. Pick the one you like the best. You can select different ones for each event if desired.
When looking at making a new event, you will find at the end the GEDCOM tag (GEDCOM = GEnea-logical Data COMmunications). Unless you are really into learning gedcom you don’t need to worry too much about what you type in here. I often just repeat the abbreviation I used at the top. Unless you want to be absolutely correct with this Reunion will figure out some way to include it in the gedcom it creates if you choose to include the category. Reunion gives a link to standard GEDCOM tags at: http://wiki-en.genealogy.net/GEDCOM-Tags. The GEDCOM-tag page says, “GEDCOM-standard permits user de-fined field names…they have to begin with an underscore _.” I think this is probably what Reunion does for you when it makes a gedcom. I have gotten gedcoms from others who have used categories Reunion does not have, and Reunion will just make a new category which is labeled *NEW [XYZ], XYZ being what the owner of the gedcom put as the descriptor. I personally would use the new event as something I really needed and not expect it to be transferred to someone else in a gedcom because I really don’t want to get that far into gedcom.
As with any window, list, or view in Reunion you can click on the ? in the corner which will take you directly to the page in the Manual which covers the topic of the window or list. If you are a beginner, go to the Contents page (icon looks like a paper with a list) of the Manual and find Tutorial in the Introduction section. There you will find 12 steps to help get you started. The Manual can also be accessed under Help in the main menu bar.

Scanning and Digital Workshops This Year

CIG is changing its scheduling format this year. The September meeting will not include genealogy software workshops, but will have all the other support tech workshops including Scanning and Digital. This is allowing Nancy to be able to par-ticipate with this workshop. We are actually going to split up for the September
workshop so we can cover more diverse levels of knowledge. Nancy will be presenting Beginning Scanning in September. Then for the second support tech work-shop she will do some intermediate scanning including slides and film negatives. Gary’s theme for the two meetings this year will be “These Old Photos.” He will take a dozen or so old family photos and put them together into a single picture suitable for framing. Why have 12 frames when one will do? He will cover adjusting, sharpening, removing defects, adding captions and more, ending up with a single document that is ready to print or take to Kinkos or other similar photo printers. We hope to see you there!

RootsMagic to Go

Did you know you can take RootsMagic with you wherever you go, and you don’t even have to bring your computer? All you need is a USB flash drive and your RootsMagic program.
When you first install(ed) RootsMagic, you also installed RootsMagic-to-go. You should have an icon on your desktop that says RootsMagic-to-go. When you click on this icon, you will see the above screen.
Notice it says, “Select Your Removable Drive.” This is where you will make sure you have the correct drive. Most of the drives are either (E:) or (F:). Now, you have to install the program on your flash drive. Click on Install RootsMagic to Removable Disk. Another screen will pop up that will let you customize what you would like to install, just click on the “Show Options” button to see what options are there. These are the ones that are listed.
Place Database for Geocoding: This will install the Place Database. It will allow you to geo-code your place names while working in your database.
CountyCheck Database: This will install the County Check Database that is used to verify a county.
On-This-Day Database: This database will show all of the events that are in your database. This could be the births, deaths or other historic events in your database.
My RootsMagic Settings: This will install the settings that you have within your program. Ex-ample of this would be, how you set up the dates, and do you capitalize your Surnames, etc.
My Spell Check Dictionary: this will install the dictionary that you have in your regular pro-gram.
Then, it will ask you about your removable drive. You can leave this option blank, or you can give it a name. It will also ask you if you want to run RootsMagic when you are connected. In other words, it’s asking you if you want to automatically run your RootsMagic-to-go when your USB flash drive is con-nected (this is only when auto-run is enabled).
RootsMagic-to-go will then transfer your data files to your removable disk and to your home computer, when you tell it to. The transfer screen will pop up, and it will show you the files that are available to be downloaded to your flash drive and/or computer. This will keep track of the files that have changed. It will inform you that there are ones to be copied and where they need to go. Your media files will not transfer to your flash drive.
Wouldn’t it be nice to grab your USB flash drive and go to the Library or NARA and all you had to do is plug in your flash drive to the computer and up came your RootsMagic program? At our November Workshop, we will be working on adding Parents, Facts and Events and how to check on Webhints.

Malware

Recently, I came home to a blaring Honk! Honk! Honk! coming out of my computer.
I couldn’t imagine what the heck was happening, and when I sat down and looked at the computer, I could see that a small rectangular window had opened up on the lower corner of my desktop window, and was blasting out the message that my security software was soon expiring, and that my computer Was At Risk! The window was rapidly blinking, the letter X was bloody red, and the honking assailed the senses. There was no denying my at-tention to this message.
The message was correct, my Webroot Security subscription was near expiration.
It was useless trying to close this window. The close-this-window-x wouldn’t work, the sound blast continued, and only the muting of the sound gave relief. The window just would not go away.
So I renewed my Webroot subscription. I thought the window was coming from the Webroot website, and even though it was a loud and obnoxious window, I appreciated Webroot for warning me that my subscription was near expiration.
But even after the renewal took effect, the honking, blinking, and warning window remained.
I finally figured it out: it was malware.
My Webroot Security did nothing to fix it, nor even detect it. So virus scanware is obviously inadequate for the detection of spyware.
I ran Spybot, and sure enough, most thankfully, the window finally disappeared. I had spent far too much time and risked my computer security before I figured out that this was a malware attack. Spybot fixed it instantly.
A similar attack happened to my computer some years ago. Malware attacked Internet Explorer, and completely disabled it. I was helpless. I opened Firefox, which opened, and from there, instituted a scan from Spybot, which totally fixed my problem. Had I not had a different browser to access, I would have been dead in the water. And again, a virus scan gave a clean bill of health to my disabled computer.
So we definitely need to scan our computers with virus-removal software, and malware-removal software. There are different malware programs available, very inexpensively or free. Some are:
Spybot at https://www.safer-networking.org. It’s free, I make a donation.
Malwarebytes at https://www.malwarebytes.org.
The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool is at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/safety/pc-security/malware-removal.aspx. It’s free.
I’m sure there are more possibilities out there. I run these security checks when I’m not working on my computer, so running them is no loss of work time, and definitely worth it. You don’t know about the attacks that get prevent-ed by resident security software, so don’t be complacent and think there are none out there.

How do I download a tree from Ancestry into
Family Tree Maker?
Family Tree Maker has the ability to download your tree directly from Ancestry. You can then import
this tree as a new file, or merge it with the tree you currently have in Family Tree Maker. Please note
that by using this method of downloading a tree, you will be able to transfer all of your media along with
your tree data, unlike a GEDCOM which is data only.
After opening Family Tree Maker:
Click the Plan workspace from the top, and select the New Tree tab.
Select the option Download a tree from Ancestry.
Uncheck the Link to Ancestry box.
A list with the tree(s) you have on Ancestry should now be displayed. Click the Export or Download
button for the tree you want.
The Export button will be available if you have never downloaded your tree from Ancestry. By
clicking it, your family tree will be prepared for downloading. Once the file has been pre-
pared, a Download button will become available.
Download will show for trees you downloaded in the past but haven’t updated on Ances-
try since the last time they were downloaded. Clicking it, the file will be downloaded imme-
diately.
Once the file has been downloaded:
If this is the first file you’ve loaded to Family Tree Maker or if you don’t have a tree currently
open, a Save tree as… window will appear, prompting you to save a file. Enter a file name
if there isn’t one listed and click Save.
If you already have a tree entered into Family Tree Maker and that tree is open, you will re-
ceive a small window asking if you want to import this file as a new tree or merge it with an
existing one.
Your file will now be available in Family Tree Maker.
This file is a copy of the tree you have on Ancestry. Any new information added to this tree
through Family Tree Maker will not be added to your tree on Ancestry.

Our Recipe and Craft Section

I wanted to tell you how this recipe came to be at our house. When my parents were married, my Mother’s Aunt gave her a recipe book that had been in her family for many years. When my Mother passed away in 2005, her cookbooks became mine. The other day, I finally had some time to look at these cookbooks, and there were quite a few that were clipped out of newspa-pers. This one was a question that had been asked from someone and was answered. It is dated July 3, 1946. From the “Pioneer Press” in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The recipe is for Baker’s Icing.
3 ½ cups powdered sugar ½ cup butter 2 egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cream butter with half the powdered sugar. Add other half of sugar slowly to the two beaten egg whites and vanilla. Combine the two mixtures.
This is very good and stays moist for days. I have made this and it is very good, although it does not stay moist for days here in Colorado.

½ cup margarine or butter ½ cup granulated sugar ½ cup brown sugar (firmly packed) ½ tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 cup sifted flour (must be sifted) ¼ tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. baking powder 1/8 tsp. salt 1 cup rolled oats
1 cup Corn Flakes (or can be replaced with rolled oats-then make it 2 cups rolled oats) ½ cup coconut
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Cream the margarine or butter with both sugars (white and brown) and vanilla. Add the egg and mix until smooth. Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt together and then add to mixture. Blend in the oats and cornflakes (if you added these) and the coconut.
Drop by rounded teaspoon on cookie sheet. Bake for 15 minutes. When finished baking, let them cool and then place in a tightly covered container or Ziploc bag.

Our September meeting went well. As one of our Software Work-
shop Leaders, I was really excited that our Special Programs Work-
shops are now scheduled on a different Saturday from our Regular
Workshops. I was able to go to whichever one that I wanted. They
are all very interesting.
We all know that there have been problems with events taking
place at Civic Center Park on Saturdays that make it hard to get
downtown and to park. When I checked on the events for the rest
of the year and for 2017, there was nothing listed. We know that
things do change and we will be keeping more informed of any
event that will interfere with our meetings. We would like your feed-
back to know what you feel is an obstacle to having our meetings
on Saturday afternoons at the library. We will have a questionnaire
at our November meeting. You do not have to put your name on it,
we just would like some information from our members.
The website is finished. Kelly Glenn and I will be talking about it
during our November TechTalk. It’s awesome! Thank Goodness for
Kelly! He knew more about this than I did. Our seminar with CGS is
scheduled for April 8, 2017. Our speaker will be David Allen Lam-
bert. He is the Chief Genealogist at the New England Historic Ge-
nealogical Society. You can read his biography on page 4 of this
newsletter.
I hope to see you at our meeting on Saturday, November 19, 2016,
at 1:30 pm at the Denver Public Library on the 7th Floor Training
Room.

Our 2017 Seminar Speaker, David Allen Lambert
David Allen Lambert will be our 2017 CGS/CIG Spring Seminar
featured speaker. David been on the staff of the New England
Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) since 1993 and is the or-
ganization’s Chief Genealogist. He is an internationally-
recognized speaker on the topics of genealogy and history.
His genealogical expertise includes New England and Atlantic
Canadian records of the 17th through 21st century; military records; DNA research; and Na-
tive American and African American genealogical research in New England. Lambert has
published many articles in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, the New
Hampshire Genealogical Record, Rhode Island Roots, The Mayflower Descendant,
and American Ancestors magazine. He has also published A Guide to Massachusetts Ceme-
teries (NEHGS, 2009).
David is an elected Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston, Mass., and a
life member of the New Hampshire Society of the Cincinnati and the Massachusetts Sons of
the Revolution. He is a member of the Society of Colonial Wars and Sons of the American
Revolution. He is the tribal genealogist for the Massachuset-Punkapoag Indians of Massachu-
setts. He is also a regular guest on The Extreme Genes podcast, hosted by Scott Fisher. The
podcast runs approximately 40-50 minutes and can be heard through the Extreme Genes

Software meetings include Family Tree Maker, Legacy, RootsMagic, and Reunion for Mac. Special Workshops meetings include Scanning, DNA, Digital Imaging, and all types of Internet Research.
We have also scheduled meetings with pro-gram speakers. The next one will be on Satur-day, January 21, 2017, 1:30pm.

A Successful Combined CIG and CGS Program Held in Octo-ber
Our October 15 meeting was combined with CGS. Our speaker was Kellen Cutsforth. Kellen is an ar-
chivist in the Western History and Genealogy Department at the Denver Public Library and is the author of Buffalo Bill, Boozers, Brothels, and Bare-Knuckle Brawlers: An Englishman's Journal of Adventure in America.
His talk will revolved around a little-known ben-efactor of Buffalo Bill Cody named Evelyn Booth. His talk was not only an entertaining story, but contained relevant research tech-niques and resources.
Copies of his book, Buffalo Bill, Boozers, Brothels, and Bare Knuckle Brawlers was available for purchase. This is Kellen’s editing of Evelyn Booth’s Journal.

CIG’s NEW WEBSITE!
Yes, CIG has a new and updated website! This site will make it easier for members to keep informed on upcoming
events and some other great features.
1. Members can renew from the website through PayPal or by a mail-in form. Of course, you can always renew at
our meetings.
2. There is now a “Members Login” page. Each member will have their own login name and password. Members
can renew their membership and update their contact information and email address in this section. You will
have access to speaker and class notes as they become available. If you choose the “Your Profile” tab you
can also enter family surnames. Just click on the “Surnames” tab and you can enter as many as you want.
These will be searchable on google by others searching the same name. It will bring them to our surname
page on our website where they will be able to send you an email through our private server. This would be
somewhat like Ancestry.com where they route the emails to you without you having to give out your email ad-
dress.
3. The “members section” will also have its own gallery or photo page. These are photos for our members only that
we do not want to make available for public viewing.
4. The events page will have all our upcoming events. It will also file all our events present and past which can be
searched through a timeframe selection. Past events will not be visible but can be searched.
5. Newsletters are available back to January of 2008. You can view them or print them. When the current newslet-
ter becomes available the website manager will email you the current issue from the website.
6. Check out the Gallery page for Photos. However, for our member’s privacy, many of the photos can only be

Last issue I covered a little bit about all of the fields. This will be more about the Note Fields.
What’s the difference between the Note Field and the Memo portion of an Event Field? The Note Fields allow up to 64,000 characters per field. Memos only allow 2500 characters which can be useful in some cases, but rather restrictive in others.
Reunion comes with 4 pre-set Note Fields: Medical, Military, Misc. Notes and Research. In addition you can add your own note fields in the Preferences. How you use the Note Fields will depend on your style and organization. It may also depend on the kind of reports you generate and what you want them to present. This article will present some suggestions for Note usage.
First of all, understand that note fields are perhaps the slipperiest of the fields to transfer as is in a gedcom file. When making a gedcom file you may find that the majority of your note fields will all be lumped together into one note field. The gedcom protocols have not been up-dated for a very long time with no intent to do so. What will be the next file translator from pro-gram to program is unknown. That said, there are still many good uses of the note fields to be helpful to you. All of your separate note fields WILL appear as you intend in the ReunionTouch app and any of the reports that Reunion uses, including the web pages.
Medical and Military are very self-explanatory. If you have need of highlighting health con-cerns, Medical is where you would put them. It is then possible to make this field private or sensitive in any reports, or exclude it entirely. Military is an excellent place to report any and all activity of the person involving the military, serving in wars and pension applications.
Misc. Notes and Research can have many meanings. You need to decide just how you will use them for your database and then stick with your guidelines. I use Misc. Notes strictly for writing narrative paragraphs about the person. In other words I write a brief biography of the person. I might also write about how I had to unravel some faulty research or present the evi-dence for a case study of this person where no direct evidence is available. This is a much more formal usage of the Misc. Note field.
I use the Research Field to record what research I’ve done on that person, or to dump data I’ve copied and pasted from an online source. My Research Field tends to be rather messy, and I usually do not include it in a report I send or post online. You can record here the type of evidence you’ve obtained: primary or secondary, direct or indirect, and original or derivative. Or you can make this your research log for this person. There are separate Logs for this as well. continued on page 7

Even though I know that my notes will not translate as I might like in a gedcom, I have still added my own note fields for my own organization. I have found that trying to cram all the cen-suses, wills, land transactions and obituaries for some of my people into one note field is too cumbersome. I understand that if I send a gedcom they will all be lumped together. However, I have had Reunion make my personal website, and it separates out my note fields on the person cards.
Some additional Note Fields I have made for myself include: Census, Land, Obituary, Will and Residences. I often make transcriptions of census information for my major ancestor lines. The Event Field for Census only allows you to record the date and place of the census. There-fore, I have a Census Note Field. I have the other categories for similar reasons. Yes, there are categories for Will, Residence and Land Purchase in the Events category, but again, these only allow for a date, place and small memo notation.
To add a Note Field, go to Preferences, click on Fields, click on Notes. You can then add or delete a note and select default notes. Click Add Note, name it, then pick a short abbreviation for it in the middle. You do not really have to worry about the GEDCOM tag unless you feel like learning more about gedcoms. Reunion’s Manual (click on the ? on this window) has a link to preferred gedcom tags. Most are for events and not for Notes. Some I have just put 4 letters in. When Reunion makes the gedcom, they still just get put into a big note file. There is a lot of good information on all Person and Family Fields in the Manual.

RootsMagic from the Beginning
Part 1

In this article, I want to pay tribute to a very special milestone - RootsMagic’s 30th Birthday! In reality, RootsMagic
(was not named this in the beginning) has not been around for 30 years, but the company that Bruce Busbee
started is 30 years old. Only the company name has changed (like most companies do within their existence).
In early 1980, Bruce wrote a program called QubeCalc. This program was a shareware spreadsheet. It wasn’t just
any spreadsheet; it was a 3D spreadsheet. At the time Bruce was an engineer in California. During this time, he
worked on spreadsheets, not your everyday spreadsheets, but 3D spreadsheets that were used by Boeing and
McDonnell Douglas Airline Companies. But Bruce could not afford these. That is when he decided to write his
own, and that is how QubeCalc came to be.
Bruce was excited. He had a company and a product, but how and where could he sell it. This is when he decided
to make it a shareware program. This strategy was, at the time, going places. You let people use it for free and if
they like it, they pay for it. Great concept, right? Think of this though, he had to download the program over the
phone. Bruce stayed up late every night because the phone rates were cheaper after 11:00pm. The program took
off slowly, and then customers wanted a faster more powerful system. Companies were selling their 3D spread-
sheets for $400 and up. He re-wrote the program, but this one was not a shareware program. He called it
ProQube. He priced it at $249.95, just hoping that he could get more people to buy his program and not the more
expensive ones. Everything was trial by error; and there were many errors (like many companies first starting out.)
He released ProQube Lite which was a shareware program for $25. This one did sell better. Parson’s Technology
was looking for a spreadsheet program to add to their program. They licensed the program to them and they re-
named it ProCalc 3D. This adventure turned Bruce’s company around. Now during this time, you have to remem-
ber, it was still a one-person company. At that time, they were a software development company, and not a pub-
lisher. The royalties that Bruce received far exceeded what he made in a year selling it by themselves.
Bruce soon made it a full-time business, and he and his wife moved to Sandy, Utah (near Salt Lake City). It was
scary for them. They were leaving behind some good jobs, and what if it didn’t work out. The first hurdle came
when he applied for the business name. The state of Utah said that the name FormalWare name was too close to
a tuxedo rental name, so they changed it to FormalSoft. Had it not been for credit cards and the help of parents,
they probably would have failed. But perseverance does pay off. Bruce did have a job during this time. A major
company wanted to buy one of the programs, but also wanted a manual. So a manual was made. Another thing to
remember about the 1980’s, was that computers were a one-program system. If you wanted to go to another pro-
gram, you had to shut down the program you were working on and start the other one.

Which Browser Do You Use and Why?

Have you wondered which browser is better than an-
other? Have you ever compared them? Nowadays,
we have choices. Back in the day, we all used Inter-
net Explorer. When I was researching browsers, it
made me think why and what are my reasons for us-
ing Google Chrome.
The browsers that I looked at were: Firefox 47,
Opera 39, Microsoft Edge, and Google Chrome. The
one that is used most often is Google Chrome. Com-
pared to the others listed here, it is the quickest.
Don’t be surprised, as Microsoft Edge is becoming a
factor and may even surpass Google Chrome. One
thing that Google Chrome has going for it, it has a
massive amount of extensions. Chrome is available
for Windows, iOS, Linux and macOS, and of course
Android, in addition to Chromebooks. This means
that you can synchronize all of your saved tabs, your
passwords and all of your bookmarks. And it’s not
just for your laptop, but for all of your devices.
Depending on what factors that you research, Mi-
crosoft Edge has the best battery life for Windows.
For Mac, it’s the Apple Safari. If you want a browser
that you can customize, then your best bet is Mozilla
Firefox. It’s too bad that Firefox does not offer what
the other major browsers do. It is vulnerable for se-
curity issues, and it is by far the slowest browser on
the market.
One thing that I did find interesting is that Mozilla
Firefox is the only one that is not owned by a major
corporation. They work hard to make their customer
service a top priority. Firefox is working on some new
add-ons.
Browsers change often. They all have their own
“special” features. Probably in a couple of years there will be more to choose from.
Classmates.com

A couple of years ago, I stumbled on a website
called Classmates.com. I was looking for some
friends that I had went to high school with, and I
could not find them anywhere. I decided to
“Google” them, and came up with nothing. But,
one of the sites that came up on Google was
www.classmates.com. I thought I might just as
well look at this since I was having no luck. So, I
put it into my web browser and thought it looked
interesting. I signed up, using the free member-
ship and looked around. I found two of the people
that I was looking for. I was so excited. I told my
dad and he asked me to look up a person for him.
He knew the parents of my friends, plus others
that I did not even know. I read how I could get in
touch with these people. To send a message to
them, you have to pay. The cost for a three-month
subscription is $7.50, and for a twelve-month sub-
scription it is $24. A two-year subscription is $36.
At the time I wrote this article, the rates listed were
at 50% off.
I signed up for three months just to see if I liked it.
And, so far I have had 22 people look at my ac-
count and my picture. I have had two people send
me messages. One was a friend that I knew. His
mom knew my sister. It is interesting to see how
people look now compared when we last saw
them in high school.
When you first are on the website, it will say “Your
High School all in one place.” You will then be
directed to: “I graduated in QQ. (here is where
you click on the state where you graduated high
school), then it will ask you the first letter of the
city you graduated in and then the first letter of the
high school name.” When you have entered all the
information, a screen will load and it will give you
the name, and the address. It will then ask you if
you want to register for free. Take a look. You’ll
never know who you will find or who will find you.

History Research Environment (HRE)
Ar�cle from former “The Master Genealogist TMG” Workshop Leader, Pat Purcell
On September 16, 2016, an announcement was made of an open source project to create a new program called (History Research Environment) HRE. It is the intention that HRE will be compatible with existing The Master Genealogist (TMG) databases.
Over the past year or so a small team of experienced TMG users has been preparing the ground for HRE. A web-site and wiki are now live, and a company (History Research Environment Ltd) has been registered to ensure that they can properly handle project funds and deal with copyright and other legal issues.
HRE is being written from scratch, and will not directly use or copy the program code within the Wholly Genes product TMG. However, it was recognized that in order to ensure compatibility with existing TMG user data, there will necessarily be some similarities between TMG and HRE, including underlying data structures, default sen-tence structures, modes of operation, and potentially, look and feel.
The team is very pleased to be able to say that Wholly Genes (Bob Velke) has kindly granted permission to reuse any aspects of TMG (other than the source code) for which they control the copyright. As HRE will be an entirely new program, permission has not been sought to re-use or de-compile TMG source code. Ownership of copyright in some elements of TMG, including translations and some timelines, remains with the original authors and if there is any benefit in reusing such third-party content, separate arrangements will be made.
The team is most grateful to Bob for his generosity and encouragement in an endeavor to build on his ground-breaking original work in event-driven history research software.
A significant amount of work has already been done on the functionality and design of HRE, and is now ready to open the project to volunteer developers who can help develop HRE into a viable open source product for free public release. In order for this project to succeed, the team will need to attract both funds and volunteers.

Our Recipe and Craft Section

Pumpkin Bars
2-cups all-purpose flour
2-tsp pumpkin pie spice
1-tsp baking powder
½- tsp salt
¼- tsp baking soda
¾-cup (1 ½ sticks) butter, softened
1-cup plus 2-Tbsp packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 ½ cups solid pack pumpkin
1-tsp vanilla
1-cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 13 x 9 in. pan with non-stick cooking spray.
Whisk flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder, salt and baking soda in a medium bowl. Beat butter and
brown sugar in a large bowl with a mixer on medium speed for about 3 minutes or until well blended. Beat
in the egg until blended. Beat in the pumpkin and vanilla (it may look curdled). Gradually add flour mixture
and beat on low speed just until blended. Spread batter evenly in the pan. Bake for about 25 minutes or
until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely.
For added fun, you can cut out fall shapes from either a leaf or pumpkin cookie cutters. In a microwave, melt chocolate chips and place in a pastry bag or a Ziploc bag and snip the corner. Pipe veins in the leaves and lines on the pumpkin.
