In computing, an input device is any peripheral (piece of computerhardware equipment) used to provide data and control signals to

an information processing system such as a computer or otherinformation appliance. Input devices are electromechanicaldevices that are used to provide data to a computer for storingand further processing, if necessary. They act an interfacebetween the computer and the use. The basic task of an input

device is to take the input from the user, translate it into themachine readable form and then present it to the processingunite devices provide for execution. In fact, the input devicesprovide a means of communication between the computer and

    the outer world.

Pointing devices are the input devices that are generally used for moving the cursorto a particular location to point an object on the screen. With the help ofpointing devices, we can easily select the icons, menus, windows etc. on the

    graphical User Interface (GUI).

Some of the commonly used pointing devices are:

    Mouse

    Trackball

    Light pen

    Joystick

    Touch screen

Mouse is a small hand-held pointing device that basically controls thetwo-dimensional movement of the cursor on the displayed screen.

    Mouse are generally two types:

    Mechanical mouse

    Optical mouse

    12/37

A mechanical mouse consists of three buttons: left button, rightbutton and scroll button. Inside the plastic coating of the mouse, there is a ball, which is rolled over a flat surface corresponding to

which the cursor moves on the display screen.

    13/37

An optical mouse is a pointing input device in which the reflectedlight determines the movement of the cursor on the displayedscreen. The upper portion of the optical mouse is similar to that of

the mechanical mouse. The lower portion of the optical mouseconsists of having light.

Trackball is a pointing device that basically consists of a socketcontaining the ball, which can be rolled manually to move thecursor on the screen. The socket also contains sensors, which

detect the movement of the ball.

Light pen is an electro-optical pointing device that is used forselecting the objects on the display screen with the help of a lightsensitive pen. It is generally connected to the Visual Display Unit(VDU) of the computer system. Using a light pen, we can directlydraw the objects on the screen by holding it in our hand.

Scanning devices are the input devices that canelectronically capture text and images, and convert them

into computer readable form. The basic task of a scanningdevice is to convert an image or the textual data intodigital data, i.e., in the form of boxes, where each boxrepresents either zero or one. The resultant matrix is

known as bit map and is displayed on the screen.

    SCANNING DEVICES:

    19/37

Hand-held scanners are the scanning devices that are generallyused for digitizing the images into bit map, which is a matrix of O's

and l's. The size of these scanners is small and the price is relativelyless as compared to the other three types of scanners.

Optical recognition devices are used for recognizing thecharacters optically. The optical recognition devices

basically make use of optical scanner for inputting data.Unlike keyboards, the optical recognition devices do notenter the data by pressing the keys. Therefore, thesedevices help the user in saving a lot of time as entering

data through a keyboard is a time consuming task. Thefollowing are some of the commonly used opticalrecognition devices.

    24/37

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) devices scan a particulardocument by recognizing its individual characters and convertingit into the editable form. These devices distinguish the dark areaon the document from the light areas for recognizing thecharacters.
