Elements of Computer System:-

A computer system consists of two major elements: Hardware and Software.

Hardware is the collection of all the parts you can physically touch.

Software, on the other hand, is not something you can touch. Software is a set of instructions for a computer to perform specific operations.

Objectives

Role of hardware.

Describe hardware components, and explain each component.

Features of networking

CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT (CPU)

1. Arithmetic Logic Unit- [ALU] = ALU performs arithmetic logical operations.

2. Control Unit- [cu] = CU extracts instructions from memory and decodes and

executes them, calling the ALU when necessary.

RAM

RAM is a semiconductor that stores charges with

transistors and capacitors.

Dynamic RAM (DRAM) -

Most popular type of electronic memory in the PC

world.

Static RAM (SRAM)- very expensive does not have to

be refreshed.

PAN

A personal area network (PAN) is the interconnection of

information technology devices within the range of an

individual person, typically within a range of 10 meters

LAN

A local area network (LAN) is a computer network that

interconnects computers within a limited area such as a

home, school, computer laboratory, or office building, using

network media.

MAN

A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a network that

interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic

area or region larger than that covered by even a large local

area network (LAN) but smaller than the area covered by a

wide area network (WAN).

Page 14: Computer hardware and networking

WAN

A wide area network (WAN) is a network that covers a broad

area (i.e., any telecommunications network that links across

metropolitan, regional, national or international boundaries)

using leased telecommunication lines.
