Defining the Possible
Forward Thinking
Welcome to Cat® Electronics Caterpillar Inc. is more than big, heavy
equipment — and much more than yellow
iron. Our products have evolved from simple
mechanical workhorses to sophisticated,
electronically controlled work-site solutions.
At the heart of this transformation is Cat®
Electronics. We “Define the Possible” for our
customers every day with our industry-leading
components, software, and electronic and
electrical systems.
Proven Experience
For more than 25 years, Cat Electronics has been
providing real-world electronic and electrical
solutions for the markets Caterpillar serves.
From on-highway to mining, construction to
electric power, marine to agriculture, Cat
Electronics offers value-added electronic
solutions that stand up to the world’s harshest
environments. With annual shipments of more
than 300,000 controls, 14-million components
and 20-billion lines of production software,
Caterpillar is not just an iron company, Caterpillar
is a world-class electronics company.
This broad experience and understanding of
heavy-duty application environments — like
severe vibration, shock, extreme operating
temperature ranges, thermal cycle, thermal
shock, humidity, corrosion and excessive
dust — has resulted in several hundred U.S.
and foreign patents in components, software
features and algorithms.

Electronics
This SAE J1939 Data Link system is composed of electronicallycontrolled analog gauges that combine the accuracy anddependability of electronics with the simplicity and visual clarityof conventional analog gauges. The system is designed for “plugand play” installation on various applications in many harshenvironments including building, construction, agricultural, and marine.
The Gauge Controller receives, translates, and resends the J1939information via a local data link to the appropriate gauge whileproviding a single interface to the data link for the gauge system. The user can mount the controller on the rear of any 3˝ gaugeor in a separate location if the panel location does not allowspace for the gauge controller and harnessing to be attached.

Operators want their machines to look, feel, drive, andride more like their personal vehicles. The Caterpillar lineof Handles, Joysticks, and Shifters has been developedusing highly reliable electronic components to satisfythat operator requirement.
The product line is comprised of the following:
Column Mounted Shifters have a five-million cycle lifeexpectancy and 2-million cycle speed capability. The reliableelectronic shifters and shuttles for transmission directionand speed input are data link ready and exhibit excellentenvironmental performance.
The Prophet Handle and Electronic Joystick are modularlydesigned allowing for application customization whileminimizing development time, cost, and tooling. Bothproducts have a long life expectancy. The handle andjoystick are ruggedly designed making them more reliablethan other commercially available products and theserviceable modules reduce customer costs.

Today, operators demand well-lit work areas using highlyreliable lights for safety and performance. The CaterpillarLighting product line satisfies these user requirementsby offering the following:
High Intensity Discharge (HID) Gas Lights are used forexterior flood lighting. The color of the light is closer tosunlight than traditional halogen thus providing an increasein operator safety. The HID light is more efficient as it canproduce the equivalent of several halogen lights of thesame wattage. The gas tube in HID lights has a lifeexpectancy of 2000 to 6000 hours.
LED Indicator and Signal Lights are designed implementingLED technology instead of traditionally used incandescentlighting. The LED technology extends the life of the lightand emits brilliant color against EMI/RFI. The LED lightalso is very cost effective as there is no risk of a filamentbreaking in high vibration conditions. LED signal lightsare now available in amber, red, or blue for off-highwayand construction equipment. Life expectancy has beenextended to approximately 25,000 hours, a greater than25X improvement over traditional incandescent technology. The light is designed with the lens sonic welded to thehousing for 100% sealing.
Rotating Beacons are the newest in the Caterpillar lightingfamily. The rotating beacon is a warning beacon that useselectronics to emit light using a gas tube. As with ourother lights, the rotating beacon is designed to withstandhigh vibration conditions.
Shock Resistant Head/Flood Lights are designed forgeneral flood lighting. The lens and halogen burner areshock mounted for long-life in high vibration applicationsand can be mounted either vertically or suspended. Anotheroperator benefit to the shock resistant light is that no toolsare required to service the halogen burner.

Information technologies from Cat Electronics
are powerful enough to transform the way users
manage their operations. Our communication
solutions provide both single and two-way
communication links. Operators can remotely
control, monitor, or program the engine in
much the same way that an operator does
from the panel inside the vehicle.
The Gateway product line allows the operator
to connect the on-board machine or engine
standard data link with off-board data networks.
The Pocket Tec device is an easy-to-install
and easy-access information product that
plugs into your Palm hand-held organizer to
read and capture engine data in real time.
Data can be saved and downloaded to your

The Customer Communication Module (CCM)
provides a means to remotely control and
monitor single or multiple packaged generator
sets (PGS) at a common site. By accessing the
CCM from a personal computer or other RS-232C
device, each PGS can be remotely started and
stopped, and engine and generator parameters
can be monitored on a “real time” basis.
Converts proprietary Cat data link to anindustry standard RS-232C serial data link
Up to eight-packaged generator sets can belinked at a common site
Software provided with the CCM canbe used for all control and monitoring functions available on the EMCPII andEMCPII+ control panels
Allows communication with a remote customer PC via direct connection or Hayes compatible modem

The Customer Communications Module (CCM) III
provides a remote two-way communication link
between the electronic controller (Generator Set
Control/GSC or Electronic Control Module/ECM) and
a host device (Personal Computer or a Programmable
Logic Controller). The operator of the host device is
able to remotely control, monitor, or program the
engine equipped with electronic engine control in much

The Gateway Explorer connects the on-board
machine or engine standard data link with off-
board data networks. The Gateway provides
the capability to communicate quickly and
seamlessly with systems using serial ports,
data link networks, or ethernet. Gateway
Explorer enables network access to information
and operating parameters. Explorer provides
the capability to access and communicate
with Caterpillar controllers and includes
numerous interfaces and protocols that enable
communications between dissimilar devices
and extend network capabilities to mobile
and stationary equipment.
Allows for custom and personal designflexibility and configuration of a product
Allows user to display and analyze vital engineperformance and health information fromany system quickly and accurately
Provides an on-board web server and dataprotocol translator for embedded controllers
View status and parameters using a webbrowser to display the current ECMconfiguration and much more
View status and parameters using customcentralized site software to monitor engines or machines
Use as a communication adapter to connect to ET; check operating conditions to display parameter status (temperatures, pressures, etc.) simultaneously, view andclear active and logged diagnostics
Offers a network enabler for Caterpillarengine/machine controls to interface withother control or display equipment
