30% OF QUALIFICATION

• 60 Marks – Non exam assessment, internally assessed and

externally moderated by EDUQAS/WJEC

• This component synthesises knowledge and understanding of

the media theoretical framework gained throughout their

course by requiring learners to apply their knowledge and

understanding of the media synoptically to practical production.

BRIEF 2: MAGAZINES• a) Print

• Create a front cover, contents page and double page feature article

a new specialist magazine in a genre (or sub-genre) of your choice.

• You should create a product for an independent publisher (e.g.

publishing, TCO London etc) targeting an audience of 18-34 year olds

with a specific interest in your chosen genre of magazine.

• Length: 4 pages.

BRIEF 3: FILM MARKETING**• a) Print

• Create a DVD or Blu-ray front and back cover, a ‘teaser’ poster, and a

main theatrical release poster for a new film in a genre of your choice.

• You may choose to produce marketing materials for a hybrid or sub-

genre of film.

• You should create a product for a major film company (e.g. Warner

Bros. or Universal) targeting a mainstream audience of 16-25 year-

• Length: 4 pages (note: the front and back cover count as one page

each).

MARKS AVAILABLE:

• The total marks available is 60.

– 10 Marks for statement of aims and intentions.

– 20 Marks for creating a media product that meets the

requirements of the brief. Including suitability for the chosen form,

genre, industry, context and target audience.

– 30 Marks for creating a media product that uses media language

to communicate meaning and construct representations.

ORIGINAL/ NON ORIGINAL MATERIAL

• You are required to create ORIGINAL content for your

production.

• The use of existing Brands or Products is NOT permitted.

• Images, footage, text must all be original – created by YOU.

INDEPENDENT WORK

• You must complete an INDIVIDUAL media production.

• You may however use unassessed participants as follows:

– To appear in media products, actors, models etc.

– To operate equipment, such as lighting or sound recording

equipment, under the direction of the assessed learner.

– All non-assessed participants must be credited on the cover sheet.

RESEARCH - FRIDAYMagazines have to use an independent publisher, and film can

use a major film company.

Therefore…

• Research media company websites as they often provide

information about the organisation and its values and about

audience demographics, viewing figures etc.

• Explore Press/media packs provide useful background

information about individual films.

• Audience information such as viewing figures or readership can

be helpful as can reviews and user comments, to identify actual

audience responses about a product.

RESEARCH - FRIDAY• Plan how the media production will reflect its industry context.

• Consider production processes, distribution and marketing,

scheduling/positioning, regulatory issues etc.

• How will the product reflect the values of the organisation?

FRIDAY –CREATE A PITCH• What is your chosen brief? Include information about the

audience age and institution?

• What is your chosen genre?

• Who will be your institution and why?

• What existing products inspire you and why?

• How will you appeal to your audience?

• What will be the content of your magazine? (No existing brands to be used)

• What will be the synopsis for your film?

• What will be colour scheme?

• What fonts might you use?

• Create a layout for your products (its ok to change this)

• Plan for use of media language

• Plan for construction of representations

• Plan for how the media production will reflect the industry context

• Plan for how the media production will appeal to and engage the target audience

• Consider your photography:

• What model/s will you use?

• What will they wear for each photo? – there should be costume changes.

• What will be their facial expression, pose, body language?

• What will their hair and make up look like?

• Where will you take your photos?

• Do you have any inspirational photos, products?

• Record all of your details, and getting consent for your model and permission to use your location.

• Plan to take your photos ASAP!

• How will your photos support your genre and appeal to your

audience?

• 8 for magazine,

• 9 for film (3 different locations, 3 different characters which

represent 1 or more social groups – age, gender, ethnicity, class,

sexuality, regional identity, disability)

• Upload your pitch to your blog

MONDAY• Audience research:

• Share your ideas with a select group and gather their feedback.

• This feedback could be written, filmed or audio recorded.

TUESDAY - AUDIENCE

• Consider methods to position/appeal to target audience:

• Codes and conventions of media language and representation

• Mode of address - direct/indirect/formal/informal?

• Content and messages/ideology

• Create an audience profile for 2 potential audience members:

1. An image of them

2. Their age, gender, hobbies & interest

3. Why would they be interested in your product?

4. Include audience category methods here also.

Carefully position the audience:Who are they and how are you appealing to/engaging them?
