after first wearing dental braces, andafter each appointment when the bracesare adjusted. In younger children

discomfort and pain, especially wheneating, can seriously affect their appetite.Eating soft foods can help by avoiding

additional pressure on teeth. Theorthodontist may also prescribe a painreliever to ease the pain of dental braces.

Also, at the beginning of orthodontictreatment, scratches and bruises may

appear on the mucosa, generallycaused by a fixed device. In such cases, orthodontic protective wax is employed.Such complaints are temporary and

tend to arise over the first 5-7 days afterbeginning treatment. Later, the mucosaadapts to the braces and the abrasions

    disappear.

Dental hygiene problemswhen wearingbraces, the areas of the teeth and gumsclose or under arch wires and brackets aredifficult to clean. If teeth are not cleanedcarefully, food particles are trapped inthese areas. This allows the accumulation ofdental plaque increasing the risk of toothdecay and gum disease. It is important to

maintain proper oral hygiene by brushingand flossing thoroughly when wearingbraces to prevent dental health problems.

sometimes mild tooth discoloration orstains may be noticed on teeth areas

adjacent to brackets. After removingthe dental braces teeth color in areaspreviously covered by the braces may

not look the same with the rest of thetooth. Possible treatments includetooth whitening, tooth bonding anddental veneers.

This complication is caused by long-term bad oral hygiene. White patchesappear around the brackets. The

enamel beneath the brackets remainsundamaged. A coating built up on thesurface of the enamel causesdemineralisation. This occurs due toharmful bacteria which break downleftover food around the brackets intoacids. The acids eat into the enamelresulting in demineralisation.

This is a stage preceding toothdecay.

If this complication arises andrepeated instruction on oral hygieneand visits to a dental hygienist haveno effect, the doctor reserves the

right to premature termination oftreatment. The priority is a healthy setof teeth and only afterwards astraight set.

    Insufficient oral hygiene can lead

    to gum infection. This infection

can complicate treatment bymeaning slowertooth movementand so treatment is slowed and

sometimes leads to irreversibledamage to the teeths supportingtissues.

in some cases, teeth may feel loose evenafter the orthodontic treatment iscompleted. During this process of movingteeth to their correct position, the bone in

the compressed side of the tooth isgradually resorbed, while on the other sidenew bone is created to fill the gap created

by the movement of the tooth. Teethmoved during orthodontic treatment willfeel loose until the new jaw bone around

the tooth roots is fully created.

Some patients have a tendency to

the occurrence of resorption. Inpractice this means that the teethsroots get shorter. This complicationhowever does not shorten the lifespanof teeth.

Every orthodontic treatment has atendency to relapse, i.e. the teethreturn to their original position. We

prevent this by using retention devicesand retainers. Retention devices arelaboratory products made to fit yourteeth exactly.

Retainers are wires which are stuck tothe back surface of patients teeth tomaintain their position. This phase is

    very important for orthodontic
