Welcome to the FHSAA Regional Championshipsfor Class A Region 4

On behalf of the School Board of Westminster Academy, and Headmaster and AthleticDirector Dr. Leo Orsino, the Track and Field family of Westminster Academy welcomesyou to this regional championship day.

The two major purposes of regional track meets are these: to qualify the top fourindividual athletes in each event, and the top four relay teams in each relay race in thisregional meet, on into state championship meet; and to crown a regional team champion.

We are pleased that FHSAA has chosen Westminster Academy as meet host for thisprestigious post-season event. We recognize the responsibility granted to us to produceand fair and exciting competition.

All Coaches and Athletes are reminded of thefollowing important information:

Running event athletes are to report to the clerk for check-in and verificationof heat and lane assignment. Distance race runners will receive hipnumbers. All races will be clerked from the southwest end of the track,behind the start line for the hurdles and 100 meters. Athletes are to report tothe clerk at the second call but not later than final call for your event.Athletes not reporting before the heat is released to the starter will not bepermitted entry into the race.

Athletes scratching from or missing an event or a race are not permitted toparticipate in any event for the remainder of the meet today, or to advance

on in the FHSAA series. Athletes may not drop an event withoutwithdrawing from the remainder of the meet. Athletes wishing not tocomplete an assigned event should not false start or skip an event, butinstead take a legal start or attempt, but just not finish the event.

Horizontal event (SP, DT, LJ, TJ) competitors will take three preliminaryevents, after which the top eight performers will be permitted three moreattempts, with all six attempts counting for the championship.

We will be enforcing FHSAA regulations in todays meet. Special mentionis being made here of a few of these rules -- no jewelry is permitted in anycompetition, with the exception of a wrist watch; uniform shirts are to betucked in; uniforms of relay personnel and individual event personnel are tobe identical; good sportsmanship is expected of winners and non-winnersalike; athletes in more than one event at a time must juggle time betweenevents check with your event judges. Athletes are not to bring cell phonesor Ipods or other possible disturbance or distraction devices inside the fenceto the clerking or competitive areas.

Results will be posted on the rest-room breezeway walls as quickly aspossible. FHSAA Ribbons will be placed into envelopes for each team, andbe available at the conclusion of the meet. Results will be forwarded toflrunners and FHSAA by late morning.

Flight AssignmentsAthletes in Long J ump, Triple J ump, ShotPut, and Discus getthree attempts each, then the top eight advance to three moreattempts in the finals, with all six attempts counting.

Athletes in High J ump and Pole Vault compete in onecontinuous flight, HJ advancing by 2 inches, PV by 6 inches,

until the winner completes their final attempts.

The top four earn advancement to the State ChampionshipMeet. The top eight places earn points and are awardedribbons by the FHSAA.

Timing and Scoring the Westminster Way

Westminster Academy uses technologies from companies leading the world in timing andscoring systems Lynx System Developers, Hy-tek Ltd., and DirectAthletics.com

Central to the Finishlynx timing system are two digital color cameras with auto-capture features,networked by Ethernet to a master timing computer. The timing sequence is initiated by a pressure sensorlocated on the end of the starters gun cable. The firing of the gun sends a signal by radio waves to thecomputer, which implants the computers real-time clock time (to 1/10000 of a second) into the eventloaded into the computer. It also initiates a wireless signal to the timing display clock at the finish line andon the track scoreboard. The cameras scan the finish area, and when they sense the presence of movementat the finish line each camera begins taking 800 images per second, with each image composed of only anarrow strip of the finish line only millimeters wide. These continuous images are stored in the computerand displayed on the monitor, looking much like a normal picture of the finish line area. Each line imagepixel has timing codes associated with it, so locating the line at which the runners torso appears on the

finish line also indicates the precise time of finish. The picture also assists the timing operator inreading in which lane the runner is finishing. The pictures are highly detailed and not difficult tointerpret, so there are no more arguments about which runner beat another, or whose stopwatch andfingers to trust.

The process actually begins with the Hy-tek computer. The Hy-tek Professional Version scoring programcontains the identification of athletes, the heat and lane assignments for the whole meet, along with theprocess for scoring places and points. In most meets, this information has been downloaded fromDirectAthletics.com, where coaches have entered their athletes online. This Hy-tek scoring program is thesource for the set-up of each race, and our Hy-tek operator passes this set-up through the network to ourtiming computer.

The timing computer and its operator receive and store the images of the finish line (the picture). Assoon as a race is concluded, that operator begins interpreting the picture, assigning times and identifyingcompetitors. These results are fed in live time to the track scoring scoreboard. When the operator hasfinished interpreting that race, he saves the result back to the Hy-tek computer where it all started in thefirst place.

The Hy-tek operator then tells the Hy-tek program to find the times from the new Finishlynx file. Hy-tekcross references times to runners ID numbers or lane assignments, the operator either lists the results(from a prelim race) or scores a running final or field event, and prints out the results for announcing,posting, and the sorting of awards.

Two other interesting and valuable items include the Gill wind gauge and the Electro-Numerics lap timedisplay clock. The wind gauge takes wind readings during jumps and sprint races, to verify if significantperformances are hindered or enhanced by wind. The laps clock is started automatically through thetiming system, and provides cumulative times to runners, officials, and fans. Both of these devices havebeen made wireless in their operations through Serial Lynx devices from the Finish Lynx corporation.

The newest item utilized for timing and scoring is the Micrograph display board, placed on a table out onthe infield. It is linked wirelessly to the scoring computer, displaying starting lineups and timing results toour guests. This display is owned by Coach Key (Servant Spirit Timing Services) and lent to WA.

Training MondaysWest Campus in Lauderdale Lakes

Each Monday afternoon in August 2013

First repetition at 4:30 p.m. sharp

flat one mile loop around the lake ( no hill )

using perimeter loop (behind hills trail) (part of 8K college trail) start line and finish line near the cross at lakeside display clocks at start and finish line coaches will record your own athletes' start/finishes times only, no place record or competition, no "results/scores"

Each Gender begins a mile rep at 12 minute intervals

First Girls Rep 4:30 p.m.First Boys Rep at the 6 minute markSecond Girls Rep at the 12 minute markSecond Boys Rep at the 18 minute marketc. through four reps each gender

Participation Fee: $30 per school per week, $100 max for 4 weeks

Open to the Public (adult or youth Road Racers) at $10 per person/week.
