Completely Hollywood (Abridged) By Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor Additional material by Dominic Conti Directed by Gené Fouché Cast: Matt Lee, Jack Evans, James McGarvery September 6 -29, 2013 Maryland Ensemble Theatre 31 W Patrick St. Frederick MD “A hilarious and speedy take on Hollywood’s highs and lows.” BBC From the scribes who brought you previous abridged works on Shakespeare, America and the Bible (all produced by MET) comes a seriously silly show biz satire. Giving Hollywood more than just a nip and a tuck, Completely Hollywood (abridged) cuts through the celluloid to condense the 186 greatest films in Hollywood’s over 100-year history into a complete compilation of classic cinematic clichés. marylandensemble.org

Welcome to the MET!Whether this is your first time, or you are a regular, it is our hope to bring an exciting, visceral experience that will enlighten, entertain, educate, and excite you!As always, we offer a wide range of experiences. We start with hilarious antics created by those Reduced Shakespeare guys and directed by one of MET’s founders Gené Fouché. Next, Hood College’s theatre professor, Joe Brady (who directed It’s a Wonderful Life) explores the classic and still very funny comedy The Importance of Being Earnest. The holidays bring us the return of the Frederick tradition of A Christmas Carol at the Weinberg and at the Carroll Arts center in Westminster, and the reprisal of David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries featuring longtime ensemble member Rona Mensah and directed by Rep Stage’s

new artistic director, Suzanne Beal. The last half of the season promises to grab you! Towson University theatre professor Peter Wray (Blue Window, Biker Macbeth, American Buffalo, etc) directs the Edward Albee gem Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Next, it’s my turn! Playwright Martin McDonough has taken Hollywood by storm with his wickedly funny work (In Bruge, Seven Psycopaths) after crafting some of the funniest, grittiest Irish plays out there (Beauty Queen of Lenaine, The Cripple of Inishmaan). The Lieutenant of Inishmore was the play that our ensemble was most passionate about producing, and promises to be a “bloody good show!”We round out our 16th season with a play by Sarah Ruhl (Dead Man’s Cell Phone) that is comic, deep, touching, and quite educational! Longtime METster Julie Herber directs In the Next Room (or the Vibrator Play) which rounds out our season. In addition, the MET promises to be a venue or cutting edge comedy (The Comedy Pigs, Laugh Station, etc) and a place for the entire family to explore theatre with the shows of the Fun Company. Thank you so much for joining us on the ride that is Maryland Ensemble Theatre!

Meet the Cast and Crew

The play will be performed with one 15 minute intermission.

direCtor’s notesIt used to be that every other commercial that appeared on television was for some type of car. I can’t help but notice that the primary product advertised lately is film. It’s true. “Hollywood is taking over the world!”

I quote movies constantly! Most of the time, I’ve forgotten the original context, or even from which films they came, but these gems of wisdom remain tucked away, ready for use for a perfect occasion. In fact, I would venture to say that most of you at some point this evening will be inspired to quote your favorite lines. We

can’t help it. Great movie lines become earworms.

Several years ago I directed The Complete Shakespeare (abridged), produced by MET. This was followed by The Complete Bible (abridged) and The Complete History of America (abridged). The high energy, fast-paced humor found in these plays appeals to me. I love a great sight gag! Mix physical humor with my love of the movies and this became the obvious show for me to take on this season.

Whether you recognize the over 190 films in our show or not, it’s hard to be completely uninfluenced by the silver screen. Film has become a primary source of our social and cultural history.

“Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.”
