We’d rather notdo it ourselvesIF you are planning yourChristmas get-together forfamily and friends and areworrying over the finer de-tails, you are certainly notalone.
Throughout the country anestimated 42 million festiveget-togethers are beingplanned – with some bravesouls planning to invite up to30 people.
While we love the thought ofgetting together to share theChristmas experience, partyplanning can be very stressfuland it can take up to 24 hoursto arrange an event.
Research conducted on be-half of Jacob’s Creek Blanc deBlancs, revealed that we spenda combined total of nine mil-lion hours cleaning and tidyingour homes, preparing food anddrink and getting ourselvesglammed up when hosting aget-together.
Just under a third of women(31%) take a whole day to getready, while nearly one in five(19%) take more than one dayto do all their Christmas party
preparations.More than two-thirds (67%)
of women say they find plan-ning parties stressful.
Getting ready and lookingglamorous (48%) is top of ourworry list when planning tothrow a party, followed bychoosing the entertainment(47%), fretting about peopleturning up (45%), getting ourhomes spick and span (28%),having enough time to preparethe food and drink (28%) andcoming up with an enticingmenu (28%).
When asked what wouldmake their get-togethers morespecial, more than half of wo-men (57%) said having waiterson hand to serve drinks to theirguests would be the ultimatetreat, followed by entertain-ment (54%) and having a newoutfit to dazzle in (48%). And tohelp take the stress out of host-ing a party, women would mostlike someone to help get theirhouse clean and sparkling forwhen their guests arrive(40%), followed by a helpinghand from a chef (35%).
E at, drink and be merry isthe enduring theme ofChristmas – but some-
times making sure that every-one else has a great time canstop you from enjoying this spe-cial time.
Deciding to celebrate with a partyfor family and friends, or even in-viting everyone for Christmaslunch, can seem like a great idea –but as the festive season draws nightrying to make everything perfectcan leave you feeling very stressedout.
That’s why a lot of people decideto put their celebrations in thehands of the experts.
And in this region we are blessedwith a variety of hotels, pubs andrestaurants all offering fabulousChristmas packages.
Whether you are planning a partyfor workmates, a celebratory mealor even Christmas lunch – there is ahuge selection of venues to choosefrom.
If you decide to eat out beforeChristmas, choose the date, pickthe restaurant and book as early asyou can. You don’t want to bedisappointed by finding that the
date you wanted is booked to ca-pacity.
When it comes to choosing a ven-ue forChristmasDaydecidewheth-er you want to eat at a hotel or arestuarant, take a look at themenus beforehand and see what ison offer. Some people may not wanta traditional Christmas lunch ofturkey and all the trimmings so seewhat the alternatives are. Ask ifthey cater for children and if ve-getarian options are available.
There is a lot to consider – but fora lot of people enjoying Christmaslunch in a restaurant adds to thefestive experience.
Decide whether it is a busy at-mosphere you are after, or a moreintimate, cosy setting.
Many restaurants now provideentertainment to keep youngstersabsorbed while they are waiting fortheir meals to arrive. This gives theadults the opportunity to relax andlook forward to a stress-free meal. And once the meal is over andeveryone is sitting back relaxing, there is an added bonus – no wash-ing up! You can simply go home andenjoy the rest of this special dayafter this perfect Christmas treat.

The perfect party? It’sall in the planningE veryone has a different
idea about what makesthe perfect Christmas
celebration. For some it is a chance to catch
up with friends over a quiet mealin a rural restaurant. For others itis a wild party with blaring musicand an all-night bar.
So, if you have volunteered to bethis year’s party organiser, how canyou possibly get the balance right?
Before you fly into a blind panic, take a deep breath and make surethat this year you make the festiveseason as stress-free as possible.
The key to a chilled out Christ-mas is organisation. You can neverstart planning too early and this iscertainly true when it comes toorganising going out over the fest-ive period. Whether you are plan-ning a huge family reunion or anintimate gathering of close familyand friends, it is best to start assoon as possible, as all the goodvenues tend to get booked upearly.
First of all, have a think aboutwhat kind of event you are plan-
ning. Know your audience andmake sure that the party is ap-propriate to the people attending.Your idea of a great night outmight be a wild night of clubbingbut if you are meant to be cateringfor Great Aunt Maud thensomething a little more sedatemight be a better idea.
Next, do your research. Checkout as many potential venues asyou can and where possible, visitthem in person to get a feel for theatmosphere and the service. See ifthey offer any deals for people whowant to stay over.
Discuss party arrangementswith the venue of your choice andmake sure that it is clear what isbeing provided. Is the venueproviding food? If so, for howmany people? Is there any en-tertainment on offer? How shouldthe evening be paid for? These areall important details you need toget ironed out so you can make aninformed choice.
Finally, having organised theparty in plenty of time, you can sitback, relax and look forward to anevening to remember!
PLAN AHEAD:Planning is thekey to the idealChristmas party.

Don’t leave anythingto chance at partytime
T he most seemingly effortless celeb-ration is usually the one that has beenplanned with military precision.
So if you have an event to prepare for don’t leaveanything to chance – you have to think of everydetail to ensure the celebration runs smoothly.
Buy yourself a clipboard, make a list and don’t beafraid to ask for help. People are usually thrilled tobe asked to get involved.
Do give yourself enough time to plan the partyproperly – booking a venue as early as possible isthe best idea.
Do stick to your budget and remember that unlessyou are generously paying for the whole eventyourself, you have to take into account otherpeople’s budgets too.
Do ask around before booking anything to gaugewhat people really want to do. You might reallyfancy a curry for a change but everyone else mightbe expecting something more traditional.
You might want to plan around a theme or askpeople to turn up in fancy dress.
Do take a camera to preserve the evening forposterity and to make sure you get to take max-imum credit for the event’s success.
Don’t leave it too late to let everyone know thearrangements for the event and to help things runeven more smoothly, it might be worth helpingpeople out with travel to and from the event.
Ordering a mini-bus or taxis to and from the eventwill prevent people from being tempted to drink anddrive. You want everyone to remember the eveningfor all the right reasons.
LIFE’S little luxuries don’t come aroundtoo often but we all like to be spoilt andpampered once in a while.

But you can get all this – and more – so
much closer to home.Rowton Hall Spa, just outside Chester, is
an experience definitely recommended.Apart from luxurious treatment rooms

Hair to take you fromdesk to dance floorT he party season is upon us
and revamping your tressesis the easiest way to trans-
form a look, when you have a fiveminute makeover window on yourhands.
This season, glamorous up-dos arewhere it’s at. From chic buns anddishevelled top knots to slicked-backtwists, there’s a style to suit everyone.
“Up hair adds an element of glamour,”says celebrity hairdresser Mark Hill.
And the good news for hair stylingphobics is it doesn’t need to look ‘done’to dazzle.
“There’s no over-structure to the looksthis year so it really doesn’t matter if itappears messy,” explains Hill. “Themore undone, the better it looks, as longas it isn’t actually falling down!”
Whether you work an up or down look, there’s a styling saviour to take you fromhair hell to party perfect.
Youdon’tneed thedexterityofEdwardScissorhands to perfect an up-do.
Feign hairdressing prowess by puttingyour hair up and add a glamorous twistto your party ensemble.
Heads will turn, especially if you usu-ally wear your hair loose.
“It’s all about dishevelled chignons forthe party season,” Hill says.
“The emphasis is shabby chic with lots
of hair dropping out, especially aroundthe hairline.”
“You basically take a high ponytail onthe crown of the head, twist the hairround, and let it splay open, securingwith grips.”
“We often rub a balloon over the top ofthe head afterwards to get that mussed-up look.”
If you don’t want to waste preciousparty time dawdling with grips andclips, add Christmas cheer to dull, greasy locks with instant quick fixes.
Make your head the centre of attentionwithout the shampoo ad hair, via state-ment accessories.
“Hair bands are a great party ac-cessory and work if your hair isshort or long,” advises hair colourexpert, Lisa Shepherd.
“Create an evening look byback-combing your crown area andsitting the band just in front.”
The back-comb technique is key toreviving lifeless hair. Try refreshing abland ponytail by back-combing yourfringe, or front section if you’re fringe-less, and pinning it back into a coolquiff.
If the wash-and-go technique has welland truly escaped you due to a hectic
party schedule, work with the greaserather than against it.
Shepherd says: “Disguise grease witha glossy shiny gel and slick your hairback, tucking it behind your ears – this isperfect for those with a bob.”
If you regularly have to jazz up dull9-5 office hair in record time, then NickMalenko from Royston Blythe at TheDorchester recommends dedicating adesk drawer to ready-to-roll hair tools.
Here are his hairstyle saviour must-haves:
“The absolute essential product forany occasion is dry shampoo,” Malenkosays. “It not only refreshes and hidesgrease but also gives great root lift, bodyand oomph.
“Curling tongs or straighteners arehelpful tools for a quickie do. Cordless
are not necessarily as effective asplug-in electrical products, but
ideal for a quick refresh ortoadda flickorcurlat the
end of a ponytail,” headvises.

Winning gifts forthose tricky teensC hristmas is fast ap-
proaching and if youhave a teenage child
(or niece or grandson) you’reprobably already rackingyour brains about what toget.
A tricky task for any festiveshopper, picking a ‘trendy’ or‘cool’ gift is never easy. And it onlytakes one false turn in the shop-ping aisle to get it wrong. So if youdon’t want to be forever re-membered for that lavender giftset or dodgy-patterned hat, thinkbefore you buy!
Thankfully there is a great se-lection of gifts in the shops thisChristmas and for teen girls you’llbe spoilt for choice. Most girls lovea new pair of fluffy slippers andpyjamas as well as jewellery andDVDs. Or perhaps your daughter’sa budding beauty queen? If so,she’ll no doubt love a make-up setor funky new hair dryer.
A fancy box of chocolates (guar-anteed to make them feel moregrown-up) is always a winner and
forolder teensa trendynewhand-bag, mobile phone, perfume giftset, mp3 cover or even a vintage-style cupcake making kit will winyou instant kudos.
Likewise, there is a great se-lection of gifts for teenage boystoo. The usual deodorant sets, hats, scarves, socks and latest CDsmake great stocking fillers. Andfor gadget lovers you can’t beat aremote controlled car or racing‘granny’ set for Christmas Dayentertainment.
Alternatively, if you can affordto push the boat out, why nottreat them to a state-of-the-artmp3 player, stylish speaker sys-temorgamesconsole?For sports-mad lads you could even get theirfavourite football team’s shirt orsome mini-goal posts to practicetheir penalties in the backgarden?
Whatever you choose, you’re sure to raise a fewsmiles and make surethat the magic of Christ-mas will never go – nomatter how old they are.

“It might sound like a horrible task, but making a budget plan is actuallyquite easy,” says Hagger. “Just decidewhat you’re going to buy, make a listand stick to it.
“Don’t be tempted by those goodies onoffer, that sale rack you’re walking pastor the tasty little treats at the check-out.And don’t try to keep up with theneighbours, either. You’ll only end upspending too much.”
Ask yourself how big the turkey reallyneeds to be. You just need enough tofeed the family and friends around yourChristmas table, with a little left over forsandwiches on Boxing Day.

It’s worth keeping an eye out forspecial offers and stocking up as andwhen you see the deals.
Go shopping with a friend for thingslike big tins of chocolates. They’re oftenon ‘buy one get one free’ offers so you
can split the cost and share the savings. It’s a good idea to buy wine in bulk aswell. Lots of supermarkets offer extradiscount if you buy six bottles.
You can also print off discount foodvouchers. Just log on to the websitewww.myvouchercodes.co.uk to saveextra money – and don’t be afraid to askanyone joining you for lunch to be incharge of one part of the meal. They’llenjoy feeling like they’ve helped.
For older children, splash out on aboard game. It’ll keep the whole familyentertained on Christmas Day.
And if that Christmas card list is mak-ing you feel guilty, send e-cards instead. It’s more eco-friendly and you’ll savemoney on cards and stamps. Or,alternatively, you could get the childreninvolved in making some.
It’s also worth taking advantage of thethree-for-two deals on offer in manyshops. The larger stores have anenormous range suitable for the wholefamily – you’ll be amazed how thesavings can add up.
“Speak to friends and relatives andagree a limit as to how much you’regoing to spend on each other and eachother’s children,” says Hagger.
“If you have a big family, maybe onlybuy for the children – adults aren’tgoing to mind when money’s tight.
“You can save even more by makingyour own presents – and friends andfamily will love the personal touch.”
Try knitting a scarf, cook or bakesomething delicious and tie it up with abeautiful bow, or ask one of the childrento paint a masterpiece and have itframed.
Be economic with energy. You may have splashed out on festive
outdoor lights – but you don’t need toleave them on all night. Just a couple ofhours in the evening will do, to geteveryone in the mood.
Inside, replace regular lights with en-ergy saving ones. LED lights use lessenergy than conventional Christmasones.
Try not to let your heating bill blow thebudget: “Turn your thermostat down byone degree,” Hagger suggests. “It maynot sound like much but could cut yourheating bills by up to 10%.”
It’s the most expensive time of year, which can reallydampen those festive spirits. Follow these expert tips toenjoy a credit crunch-friendly Christmas
