Riding the Street Waves

• Skateboarding had reached its first peak in the early 60’s.

• began to mass-produce the first true surfing-inspired skateboards

• Over fifty million skateboards were sold within a three year period

• the first skateboard contest was held in Hermosa Beach, CA in 1963.

• 1965 a slew of so-called safety experts pronounced skateboarding unsafe - urging stores not to sell them, and parents not to buy them.

JFK Assassination

• Assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963.

• Lee Harvey Oswald was the prime suspect, and was arrested at a movie theater.

• Oswald was then shot by Jack Ruby.

• Che was a revolutionist. He traveled all around Latin America. He also traveled to China, North Korea and the Soviet Union promoting a revolution. He fought for what he thought was right. His main enemy was the government. He helped Fidel Castro with the Cuban Revolution. He was a very important man during the 50s and during the 60s.

• Che Guevara called himself a Marxist-Leninist which is a communist ideological stream that emerged as the mainstream tendency amongst the Communist parties.

• He belong to the Party of the Cuban Socialist Revolution, and the National Liberation Army in Bolivia.

• On October 9, 1967 Che was executed by a Bolivian sergeant. The president of Bolivia ordered him to be killed.

• Che’s life and legacy still are here to this day. People view him as a hero because he fought for freedom.

Dag Hammarskjöld

• Was a Swedish diplomat, author, and the second Secretary-General of the Unite Nations

• only person to have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously

• John F. Kennedy called Hammarskjöld “the greatest statesman of our century”

• He was flying to negotiate a cease-fire on September 17th. When his DC-6B airliner crashed near Zambia.

• Hammarskjöld remains the only U.N. Secretary-General to die in office

• This was the second model of the Thresher

• Laid down:28 May 1958

• Launched:9 July 1960

• Started Posting Overhaul Trials accompanied by the USS Skylark the rescue sub.

• They were 190 miles apart. Then over phone The Skylark heard minor difficulties coming from the Thresher.

• Later they found the Thresher sunk at the bottom of the ocean with everyone dead.

• The watts riot began on August 11, 1965 in Los Angeles in the Watts neighborhood. It all started when the Los Angeles Police pulled over Marquette Frye and his bother. A group of people gathered around the scene. Then a struggle began once Frye’s mother came to the scene. The police arrested all three family members using their batons. Doing that angered the crowd. After the police left a big riot started resulting in 34 people dead, 1,100 injured and caused an estimated $100 million dollars damage.

• He was the 2nd person and 1st American to travel into Space.

• Before liftoff Alan said what is now called the “Shepards Prayer”

• On July 20th, 1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, two of the three men of the Apollo 11 team, became the first people to land and walk on the moon.

• Over 500 million viewers tuned in to watch the live broadcast.

• Six hours after landing Armstrong spoke his famous line “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.

• As with many historical events, many people believe the landing was an elaborate hoax.

Man to ever walk on the moon

He took his first steps on the

Moon on July 21st 1969.

His first words were.

• A dispute between America, The Soviet Union, and Cuba during the Cold War.

• Americans feared the expansion of communism and rumors of the Soviet Union developing Atomic weapons.

• Cuban was seen as the closest threat involving missiles.

• The crisis lasted two weeks, beginning on October 14th and ending on October 28th 1962 after an agreement was reached to dismantle all of Cuba’s missile bases.

•The Peace Corps. Was established on March 1st, 1961 in order to help promote world peace.

• It was established on the ground it would be a completely volunteer run, non-profit organization.

• It is believed that the Peace Corps would not have been founded as early as it was if not for JFK suggesting the establishment of such an organization during his 1960 presidential campaign.

• The smilies reach their peak in the 60’s. You could find them on almost anything.

• The Flintstones first aired on September 30th 1960. It was one of the best comedies of that time.

• Barbie Doll became the craze of the 60’s. Little girls would do anything to get their hands on the new Barbie dolls. Then they branched out and made Barbie Dream Houses and everything………

• First Produced in 1963 by Stan Weston, G.I. Joe was marketed for those who weren’t really into Barbie Dolls.

• A new line of G.I. Joe characters in a WWII theme was introduced on February 2, 1964

• In 1965 a black G.I. Joe character was introduced.

• Talking figures were introduced in 1967.

• The Famous Dance show reach its peak in the 60’s.

• Held in Bethel, NY from August 15 to August 18, 1969, Woodstock was a 3 day festival all about peace, love, and music

• Over 500,000 people attended, 300,000 more than expected.

• Though it was a peaceful gathering, there were two reported deaths.

• A total of two births and four miscarriages were also reported .

• The Beatles was one of the most famous bands in the sixties. John, Paul, George and Ringo were the band members. They were originally called The Quarry Men.

• They started in Liverpool England in 1957• August 18, 1960 they got the name the Beatles.• Beatlemania arrives in the U.S.A. on February 7, 1964• Their top 3 songs are; 3) I am the Walrus 2)

• Their music was a huge part of this time period. Everyone knew them and their music.

• Started in London, England in 1962. • The band members are Mick Jagger, Keith

Richards, Charlie Watts , and Ronnie Wood. • They became famous in the United states around

1964. They released lots of singles in the U.S and they were very popular.

• Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi.

• He got his big break on October 16, 1954 when he signed a contract to do fifty- two Saturday night appearances.

• On January 10, 1956 Elvis recorded a number of songs and among those there was his first big hit. Heartbreak Hotel. And since then he became more and more popular.

• He did more than just make songs. He also was an actor in a bunch of movies with paramount Pictures.

• He was a big part of the American Culture because he was not only a huge rock -n- roll music star he was also a movie star. He was a role model to most people.

• Formed in 1961, The Beach Boys helped solidify the SoCal lifestyle and fueled the sudden boom in surfing.

• Between 1962 and 1965 they recorded sixteen hit singles including "Be True to Your School," "Fun, Fun, Fun," and "I Get Around“.

• Surfing hadn’t been very popular prior to the 1960’s.

• It’s popularity increased with the help of The Beach Boys.

• Movies such as Gidget helped to increase the sports recognition.

Jim Brown • Arguably the best running back ever, was also named by The Sporting

News as the best running back ever.

• Retired as the NFL record holder for single-season(1,863) and career rushing(12,312) yards.

• As well as all time leader in rushing touchdowns(106), total touchdowns(126), and all purpose yards(15,549).

• Only rusher in NFL history to average over 100 yards a game for career.

• He did all this despite not playing past the age of 29.

• JOE NAMATH ONE OF THE BEST QB’s to ever touch the gridiron. He had a deadly arm and one of the greatest work ethics ever. He wouldn’t accept losing and would do all he can to prevent it.

Ernie Davis• Excellent collegiate career at Syracuse University, succeeding Jim Brown.

• MVP of ’60 Cotton Bowl, and ’61 Liberty Bowl.

• First black player to win the Heisman Trophy.

• First black player to be drafted first in the NFL draft.

• Never played a NFL game because he was diagnosed with leukemia and died at the age of 23.

• His jersey was retired by the Cleveland Browns, number 45.

• Psycho was possibly the scariest movie of its time. It was released on August 25th 1960. It had one of the scariest scenes ever which frightened people to not even take showers.

• One of the best horror movies ever for its combination of an amazing plot and amazing camera angles. It was released on June 12th 1968
