Competition RoutinesThe Competitions Routines for this years O-Ringen contains an important change due to SOFT’s new competition rules: In the Super elite, Elite and the H/D-classes 18 and older (Regular-, Long- and Short classes), the competitor does not receive his/her map until the start moment. For all others (i.e Direct registration, Recreation-, Open-, U-, Beginners and Introductory, as well as H/D-classes 16 and younger) as before, that the map is received one minute prior to start. Read more under “Start”. As in 2001 and 2002 separate control definitions will only be provided in the Elite classes. For all other classes the definition is printed on the map as well as a number code next to the control number respectively. Please note that the finishing line, including the finish punching units are approximately 15 metres prior to the speaker platform, i.e. out in front of the finishing area. Do not run past the finish punch units! In two of the finishing chutes there will also be an extra track at the end, so that the competitors affected by this have time to get used to this before the last stage, when we have to separate those with chasing start and those without. Read more about this under “Finishing”. Just like last year, Direct registration-, Recreation-, Open-, U-, Beginners and Introductory classes have free starting time, so called punching start. For those competing in any of these classes it means that their starting time for stages 1-4 are not allotted. They go to the starting area whenever they want to and there start at the next available minute. Read more under “Start”. For Direct registration-, U-, Beginners-, and Introductory free starting time will be applied on stage 5 too, while Recreation-, and Open classes will have a chasing start. For HD10 allotted start is applied all days.

Under the headline “Short facts about your class”, there is a schedule where you can find your class and see what is applicable for your start method, control definition-, map at start, scale etc. Sportident’s system for electronically timekeeping and punching is used this year too. The SI-card steers our behaviour in many different situations, computerised, it is actually the small plastic parts that are moving around the tracks. It is therefore important to remember to take the correct SI-card with you and to treat the card with respect and consideration so that you, without any problem, can devote your time to the problem solving in the woods. You may be disqualified if you treat the SI-card in the wrong way. More information regarding the running bibs is to be found under “Rules for SI-cards”.

StartOn your way to start: Make sure you have the correct SI-card with you! The SI-card number is on the card and on your number tag. On the way to start you will come to a place where you are to clear your SI-card by placing it in the hole of a clearing station. After having the card in the station for a few seconds, the station should blink and/or beep. This indicates that the card’s memory now is cleared and that there is room for all the controls on the course.

Stages 1-4

2-minute line:Classes with allocated times: When your “approach time” is shown, you are to go into your classes’ box to be checked off and to test punch your SI-card. When you are checked off, your start time is also checked.

Classes with free starting time: When you think it is time to start, you go to the line in front of your start box. When being first in line, and the clock changes to a new minute for the next “Approach time”, you go into your box to be checked off and to test punch your SI-card. The time which you test punch is registered on your card, in case you should forget to “start punch”. All classes: At check-off, an official checks that you have the correct SI-card. If you have the wrong card, you are not allowed to run the card you have and must instead rent one of the organiser’s cards. Test punching indicates that the card is correctly cleared by the station blinking and/or beeping. If the card has not been correctly cleared, the organisers have a reserve clearing station. The test-punching also registers that you have started; this is needed in order to check, at the end of the competition, that you have returned. After you have been checked off and have test punched you go to the 1-minute line.

1-minute line:Elite classes and the H/D18 and older classes (regular, Long and Short classes): After the beep for a new minute, you go to the map holder for your class and get prepared to take your map. At the next long beep – the start signal – you take your map and head off to the starting point.

Other classes (direct registration, recreation-, open, u-, beginners- and introductory-, as well as H/D 16 and younger): At the beep signal for a new minute you go to the map holder for your class, take the correct map and continue to the start line where you wait for the starting signal. At the starting signal you pass the starting line and head off to the starting point.

Starting lineClasses with free starting time: When you have passed the starting line you should relatively quickly punch in at one of the starting units. You are not allowed to wait behind the start line or wait to start punch. If you have not punched within 15 seconds after the beep, or forget to start a punch, your starting time is counted from card-check time. And you will lose time.

Stage 5

Chasing startAt stage 5 all classes have chasing start, with the exception of HD10 (allocated on all days) as well as Introductory (Inskolning), U-classes, beginners (Nybörjare) and direct registration (free start on all days).

Note that Recreation and open classes have chasing start even though they have free starts on days 1-4. Chasing start means that the competitor with the best total time starts first. Others in the class start as long after the leader as they are behind in total time. Competitors who are more than 90 minutes behind the leader in the Elite classes or more than 120 minutes behind in other classes, or do not have a total result, start at 15 second intervals after 90 or 120 minutes respectively. The first 15 in each class with a chasing start have number tags with their class and placing number after 4-days. Each and oneself collect these tags at the start area. Other competitors use their ordinary number tag. Approximately 3 minutes prior to you start time, you will be called to be checked off and test your SI-card. After that you advance. When your start time (hour, minute and second) comes up on the display, you will be sent off to pick up your map and proceed to the starting point.

Late startRunners who arrive late to start are to call for help from starting personnel at the side of the class chutes. Delayed start is allowed up until 30 minutes after the starting list time. Last regular starting time is 14.00 hrs. For classes with free starting time, delayed start is allowed up until 14.30 hrs, then with a time penalty of 30 minutes.

Wrong/lost cardAlways check prior to start that you have your SI-card with you and that the card number is the same as the printed card number on your number tag. If you arrive at start with wrong or without the SI-card, you will have to rent a card at the start and will be charges according to rules for “running cards”. This procedure will take a while and you will have to risk losing your starting time. Rented cards are to be handed back at the finish and paid for at the stage’s Competition Office.

The participants’ responsibility at the start– To arrive at the correct time with a cleared SI-card and the correct number tag.– Not to start with the wrong card but, if this is the case, have already acquired a rented SI-card from the Start personnel.

– To take a map from the correct holder and check that the correct class is printed on the map. Unfortunately, several competitors are disqualified each year due to not having checked this.

Punching at the controlsWhen you punch at the controls, you must check that the station blinks and/or beeps. Be especially observant if another runner is punching at a station near you, so that you are not mistaking his signals as a receipt of you punching. For safety, you can always punch again. Only the first accepted punch would be stored on the card. If repeated punching does not give a response, use the reserve manual punch attached to the control stand. Punching with a reserve punch is to be done in the reserve squares R1, R2, R3. After finish you then have to go through the red exit to have your reserve punch checked by an official. If, when punching at a control, you discover that you have missed a previous one, you must go back to the missed control and then all the remaining according to the map – including the one you have already punched out of order. Lost SI-card means disqualification, even if you have punched with a reserve punch at the controls after losing the SI-card.

The participants’ responsibilities when punching the controls– To punch at the correct controls in the correct order– To wait for blink and/or beep from punching– To, if there is no blink or beep, use the punch in a reserve square– To transport the SI-card from start to finish even if punching in reserve squares have occurred.

FinishFinish area and finish punchingThe finish area consists of ten chutes. Your chute is part of your course and the other chutes are forbidden area. Running in the wrong chute may lead to disqualification. For the classes in chute “Expressen ” and “Kling Glace” that do not have a chasing start at stage 5, there is an extra chute between the “Expressen” and “Kling Glace” chutes on all stages. This chute is to be used by runners who do not have a chasing start at stage 5 during all stages. Look at the outline of the finish area besides this text. There are finish judges at stage 5 for the classes that have a chasing start. Their task is to decide the order in which finish punching is to be carried out. Note! The finish line and the finish stations are approximately 15 metres prior to the speaker tower. After the finish, continue forward. The reading stations are under the speaker tower and there your SI-card will be read into the computer system.
