    8 COMPASS, Thursday, April 1, 2010

In a world ofcolor on televi-sion, in movietheaters and, ofcourse, on com-puter and cell-phone screens,

you can forget the highdrama and beauty of blackand white images. Two ex-hibitions make that dramaclear.

At Joie de Livres Gal-lery at Salisbury Wines,Merideth McGregor is

showing a small collectionof photographs by EstherBubley, the first woman towin first prize in Photog-raphy magazines annualcontest for best photoof the year. Bubley, whodied in 1998, was one of ahandful of photographers

who worked for the greatillustrated magazines Life, Look and others and for large corporationssuch as Standard Oil,which commissioned pic-ture stories from aroundthe world for their publicrelations and advertising

efforts. The Salisbury show isquite small, unfortunately;but it gives a taste ofBubleys mastery of com-position and developing.McGregor has chosen im-ages from Bubleys justlyfamous Life article on

Marianne Moore, the Pu-litzer Prize winning poet(1951) now largely forgot-ten except by those ofconsiderable age forher marvelous personaleccentricity.

Moore became a be-loved fixture of bothGreenwich Village and

New York City itself.Diminutive and dressedalways in a black three-cornered hat and longblack cape, she threw

out first pitches for herbeloved Yankees, actedas unofficial hostess formayors and posed formany photographers. ButBubleys images are iconic:Moore with a whitecockatoo on her hand orwith the most charming of

    baby elephants.The Moore photos are

joy captured forever. There are also images

from a series Bubley did ofa girls school in England. The freshness, inquisitive-ness and mixed national-ity of the girls is striking.

Prices for all the Bubleyprints are high: $6,000and up.

Quite different, but alsoblack and white, is Leon-ard Ragouzeous show atHotchkiss Schools Tre-maine Gallery. A retiredprofessor of art in Penn-

sylvania, Ragouzeous nowlives in Vermont, wherehe draws and paints with

India ink on paper. These are mostly enor-

mous pictures, the major-ity five feet or more inheight and width. Theresult is always dramaticand arresting, if not al-ways appealing. Best area wonderful horizontal

picture (most of the worksare vertical) of two WorldWar II-era airplanes, silvery, as if moonlightis reflecting off theirmetal bodies in an other-wise inky black sky; andtwo haunting portraits:Doubt, clearly a study

of the artist, and Angieat 87, a straightforwardlook at a woman in spec-

tacles who is very muchalive and connected tothe world no matter herage. There are studies offruit and vegetables, threesmall pictures of a paint-brush the first of whichI found oddly compelling even a quiet picture

of a Hamilton Beachmilkshake blender. Andthere are more portraits, acouple very good. Thereare only 20 pieces in theshow, but the impact isgreat indeed. The largeimages are $5,000 to7,000.

Joie de Livres Galleryat Salisbury Wines is at19 Main St. Hours areMonday - Saturday, 10a.m. to 7 p.m. 860-248-0530.

The Tremaine Gal-lery at The HotchkissSchool is open Monday- Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4

    p.m.; Sunday, noon to4 p.m. The show re-mains through April 25.(860)435-3663.
