ABSTRACT Shear walls are necessary in high-rise buildings and these are more effective in resisting lateral forces i.e. wind force and seismic forces. In this study the behaviour of G+10 storey building placed with shear wall of uniform reinforcement and Shear wall of Boundary elements of different width to length ratio is investigated in Seismic Zone IV by modelling 5 models using the ETABS software and the analysis has been carried out for Equivalent static analysis and Response spectrum method as per the Indian standard code. The results obtained for parameters like Maximum storey displacement, Maximum storey drift, Base Shear and Time period were compared between building with uniformly reinforced shear wall and Boundary elements in shear wall for different ratios. Keywords: Shear Wall, Boundary Element, Uniform Reinforcement. I. INTRODUCTION Shear walls are necessary when it comes to building with higher stories to overcome the lateral forces. These lateral forces includes Wind force and Earthquake forces, this can be effectively minimized by providing shear walls in high-rise buildings. Shear walls are the reinforced concrete members constructed in the higher earthquake intensity areas to resist the lateral forces due to the wind and earthquake forces. There are different types shear walls according to the materials used are as follows. A. Shear wall Reinforcement Shear wall reinforcement can be done in two ways as follows: i Uniform Reinforcement in shear wall In this, shear wall reinforcement are provided uniformly along the full length of the wall both in the longitudinal and transverse direction as shown in the figure below. In this type, the reinforcement used along the full length of the shear wall is uniform. Figure 1: Plan view of the uniform reinforcement ii Boundary Element reinforcement in shear wall Boundary elements are the portions of the shear wall along wall edges are reinforced or strengthened by longitudinal and transvers reinforcement. In this type, the reinforcement at the portions along the wall edges is more compared to reinforcement in middle portion. As shown in the figure below.
