HISTORY AND NATURE OF BUSINESS
Oilfield Technical Inspection Sdn Bhd (OTI) provides expertise and equipment in third partyengineering inspection, non-destructive testing (NDT) and quality assurance/quality control(QA/QC) with a niche in the inspection of the joints of newly laid pipelines.
In order to ensure its competitiveness in this NDT market segment, OTI has developed andmanufactured its own series of Pipeline Crawlers equipment for the radiographic inspection.
Pipeline Crawler 24” Crawler with 300kV tube
Prior to mid 2007, projects executed under OTI were put under the name of its sistercompany – Focus Inspection Sdn Bhd. This is mainly due to the strategies employed at thatpoint of time by the previous shareholders, where Focus and OTI has commonshareholders. The Project Management Team (PMT), equipment and personnel were allfrom OTI.
However in mid 2007, OTI was taken over completely by the current shareholders, and assuch, common shareholders between Focus and OTI no longer exists. The period until mid2008 was the transition period between Focus and OTI, where OTI started to bid for worksunder OTI itself and was building its own track records.
During the next five (5) years, OTI has expanded into providing other related services suchas the supply of QA / QC personnel, radiation safety consultancy, training and certification ofNDT personnel to the American Society of Non Destructive Testing (ASNT) Level I andLevel II by qualified Level III, and research, design and fabrication of NDT equipment andaccessories such as pipeline crawlers and film drying system.
OTI also offers the following NDT services – Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic ParticleInspection, Dye Penetrant Testing, Thickness Gauging, Phased Array inspection and others.

GE Weldstar – Hybrid AUT Girth Weld Inspection
DesignThe ultrasonic electronics are located on the scanner head (known as UTR – Ultrasonic TestingRemote ). With the combination of shielding and natural cancellation, the Weldstar is able toovercome the problem of Electro Magnetic Interference ( EMI ) or Radio Frequency ( RF ) noisefrom other equipment such as from welding machines. In addition to this, since the pulser – receiveramplifiers are on the scanner, there is no need for a complex umbilical connecting the scanner andthe pulser – receiver.
Other equipment has the ultrasonic electronics away from the scanner head, and as such, complexumbilical need to be connected between the scanner head and the pulser – receiver unit. Since theultrasonic is running down the umbilical, it is more susceptible to noises from EMI.
At the other end of the umbilical is the computer, which processes all the information receivedthrough the umbilical from the UTR. The computer unit is known as UTM – Ultrasonic Testing Main.
There is also GPS capability built-in onto the scanner head – more appropriate for onshore pipeline.
FlexibilityThe scanner head contains ( UTR ) all its ultrasonic hardware in 4 modules which can be replaced onsite. It can be configured as follows :
1. Four 8-channel conventional modules giving 32 conventional ultrasonic channels2. Two 64-channel PA modules and two 8-channel conventional modules giving 128 PA
channels and 16 conventional channels
This flexibility allows the operator to configure optimum inspection solution for any given jobscope.
Inspection can be done to conform API 1104, DNV-OS-101 and others.
Reliability
The Weldstar has been tested to operate in ambient temperatures from -50C to +60C. GE has alsointroduced fully modular electronics ( plug and play function ), drive mechanism, and a single stepdetachable umbilical. The average time taken to replace the item is 1 min for drive motor; 2 mins forumbilical replacement and 5 mins for PA modules.
Software
The SetUp Wizard software on the UTM would allow the Operator to perform the complete set upwithin 1 day as compared for a few days for other equipment. This set up would include generatingthe calibration block design and complete definition of inspection parameters.
The PlusWeld software organises and archives the scan data almost immediately. Beside thescanning date, other info included on each weld data set includes the date, time and GPScoordinates.
Inspection capabilityThe scanner is optimised for 12” dia and above; by using a special band, Weldstar can do inspectionfrom 8” dia.Wall thickness is from 7-8mm and above.Scanning speed is 100mm / sec.Minimum coating cutback is 150mm.

OTI CRAWLER OUTLINE DESCRIPTION
This advance 3rd generation OTI crawler system is a result of many years of development couple withmany years of experiences working at the site. The range of crawlers we produced, can handle anominal pipe diameter from 6" (153mm) to 60" (1525mm). We manufactured 3 types of crawlersystem. Our smallest size crawler system can able to handle pipe sizes from 6" (155mm) to 16"(406mm) diameters, the medium size crawler can able to handle pipe sizes from 10” (254mm) to 60(1525mm) and the large size crawler can able to handle 24” (609mm) to 60” (1525mm)
UNIQUE DESIGN FEATURES
OTI crawler is of monocoque construction with all mechanical and electrical drives fitted on a subchassis for ease of maintenance. This particular design criteria was built with reliability, ease tomaintence and light weight.
The main drive from the DC permanent magnet motor drive the wheels. The motors that drive thewheels are light and powerful, with high starting torque characteristic.
Speed of motor are variable from 0 to 100% duty cycle when crawler acceleration, deceleration, inching and creeping. All this speeds is closely and accurately controlled by the powerful onboardfirmware ..
Our crawler’s power circuit are designed to improve the safety and reliability. Since, only one powercircuit is used, it is not possible for the drive motor to operate at the same time with the radiactionsource. This unique design feature is to ensures that accidentaly exposure by radiation source cannotbe happen while the crawler is being driven through the pipeline.

MICROPROCESSOR CONTROLLER
At the centre of the crawler logic is a power 68HC705B micro controller which is running at 4MHz.The operational firmware is carried inside the logic in a MCU itself. Various types of chopper areavailable to run different types of X-ray tube at their optimum performance point. Careful automaticcontrol of the X-ray tube switching wave forms ensures that the maximum X-ray output is obtainedfrom each type of tube whilst at the same time keeping the current drain from the battery pack to aminimum and prolongs the x-ray tube insert life.
The efficient management of the power systems in the controller extends the operational capabilities ofthe crawler. The external chopper system continuously monitors both the battery voltage and thecurrent being drawn by the power circuit. As the power available from the battery pack reduces duringoperation, the chopper system compensates by adjusting the power circuit control wave form tomaintain the X-ray output at the required level. This will maximise the number of radiographs beenradiograph by each full charged battery pack.
To prevent the battery pack from being damaged by deep discharge, usually caused by abusiveoperation, the Micro controller terminates the radiography process while there are still sufficientcharges remaining in the battery pack to drive the crawler out from the pipeline. This signal thecrawler operator that no further exposure is possible and need to drive out the crawler to replace orrecharge the battery pack.
KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS.
1. RELIABILITY: The crawler is designed to withstand the rough area, minimise thebreakdown, repair time and at the same time to optimise the performanceand output.
2. MAINTAINABILITY: The monocoque construction ensures that maintenance can becarried out quickly, reducing machine downtime to the minimum.
3. OPERABILITY: The coded control signals system which transmit audible sound to theoperator, is to make operator aware the crawler system status and whathe should do next.
4. ADAPTABILITY: The whole crawler system is completely control by firmware andconfigured to activate external chopper system to provide full power toradiation source..

CRAWLER OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS.
The crawler logic unit is microprocessor controlled and is designed to position an x-ray source inside apipeline. All positioning and x-ray operation are software controlled and only a minimum number ofexternal controls are required.
By utilising an integrated power circuit design for both the motor and the x-ray are controlled by thesame unit. Since, the power is diverted by means of a relay to either the drive motor or the x-ray itshould not be possible for the crawler to emit x-rays while in the drive condition. This design featureis intended to protect personnel from the effects of a run-away crawler emitting x-ray.
GENERAL OPERATION.
The following descriptions assume that the user is familiar with the operation of pipeline crawlers andfurther assumes that the Controller has been installed correctly.
Following power up the crawlers' sounder will emit a short beep to indicate that the logic operationshave begun.
Following switch on the crawler is waiting for commands either in the form of a forward or reverseswipe by a radioactive tracer or from the manual inching control buttons.
Should the batteries be in a low state after about 60 seconds the sounder will emit a series of 3 beepsevery 2 seconds. In this state the crawler should not be put in a pipeline as no testing will be possible.
If it is required to halt any operations this may be done by pushing either of the forward and reversebuttons.
INCHING OPERATION
Two sets of inching buttons are provided at the front and rear of the crawler to allow the operator todrive the crawler into the pipeline. Only one inching button should be pushed at a time then eitherforwards or reverse inching operations at reduced speed will be carried out.
The inching speed is pre-set at 50% motor speed and the forward and reverse inching buttons controlthe crawler movement. Rapid operation by togging between forward and reverse should not beattempted as damage to the motor or drive train could result.
During detection and positioning operation a inching mode is used and this speed is adjustable by 25turn trimmer. This alternative speed may be observed by depressing either the forward and reverseinching buttons and 25 trimmer may be adjusted to achieve the desired inching speed for detectionoperations.
OTI Crawler
The above adjustment does not affect the normal inching operations which always take place at 50%motor speed.
FORWARD POSITIONING OPERATIONS.
If a tracer is swiped forwards over the Geiger Mueller (GM) detectors the processor will select theforward direction by operating the direction relay ad the drive motor speed will accelerate tomaximum.
When a signal is detected at the forward GM tube while motor in motion mode, the motor drive will gointo inching speed and stop when both Forward and Reverse GM tube had been detectedsimultaneously. This method of positioning has been adopted so that the crawler may drive atmaximum speed to the test site and then position accurately as quickly as possible.
When positioning operation have completed the crawler is primed to begin testing. Testing is initiatedby removing the tracer from the pipeline in a radial direction.
REVERSE OPERATIONS
If a reverse swipe is applied the direction relay (if not already de-energised), and travel in the reversedirection will commence. As before the drive will gradually accelerate to maximum.
When the first positioning signal is detected at GM2 the crawler again begins its detect and positioningoperation. The unit will continue inching until both GM1 of GM2 are detected. Once this conditionhas been reached the motor will stop .The reverse positioning sequence is identical to forward positioning sequence described previously.By this system the final rest position relative to the tracer is the same for both directions of travel.

EXPOSURE OF X-RAY SOURCE.
Unlike many conventional controllers which control the exposure by increasing the exposure time asthe batteries discharge, this external chopper controller compensates by monitoring the milliamperescurrent and voltage status being drawn by the tube. By this method exposure times are constant andduring operation the controller will maintain the current at its pre-set level. As the batteries begin todischarge the controller compensates by increasing the operating frequency and pulse width of the x-ray tube until the maximum specified frequency and minimum pulse width for the tube type is reached.Operation outside the manufacturers recommended parameters is not allowed not only for theprotection of the x-ray tube but also for the safe operation of the power controller.
Following positioning of the crawler testing may be triggered by removing the tracer from the pipe in aradial direction. When simultaneous loss of both GM1 and GM2 signals is detected the crawler willbegin its test sequence.
First the crawler will emit a 5 ( adjustable ) second pre-warning sound and this will be followed byactivation of the x-ray power source.
In very general terms the external chopper system will begin to drive the x-ray tube at its lowestoperating frequency and at its preset pulse width. This pulse width and frequecy controls the amountof current that is passed through the tube until specified period is reached.
This gives reduced power on the x-ray target and is done to warm-up the x-ray target before full poweris applied. One the test sequence has been completed the crawler waits for further command sequencesfrom the tracer.
