Problem Statement: To Reduce energy consumption at EAF&AOD ID FAN in SMSfrom 41.5 Kwh/ MT to 35.8 Kwh/ MT

Project start : 01.04.2017

Project End : 01.12.2017

Problem Identification:

▪ Electrical Power consumption is major aspect at EAF& AOD ID fan and high maintenance.

▪ Power consumption @ 41.5 KWH/MT of Stainless Steel

▪ Power consumption is about 14326160 KWH Per Annum

▪ Power costs about Rs. 11.5 crore Per Annum @ of Rs. 8 per KWH

FLUID COUPLING ID FAN1250 KW HT MOTOR

Page 15: Company Profile - Green Business Centre · Company Profile Energy Mapping & Energy Projects ... 1 Energy Saving by Arresting of Air-Leakage in HRD & Optiisation of Pressure 34.5 245.8

Analysis of Electrical Energy Loss:

▪ An audit of EAF & AOD ID FAN was carried out to check the energy consumed by EAF & AOD ID fan motors Thefollowing activities were carried out:

– Identified & analyzed that EAF and AOD ID fan motors (1250 KW) are 3.3KV motors and are being operatedthrough VCB

o These motors are coupled through fluid coupling with ID fans which is not energy efficient medium asapproximate 4% transfer loss

– Identified that speed variation is done through fluid coupling which is causing energy loss.

Due to Fluid coupling it is not easy to vary speed of ID fan motors as per process condition of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and Argon oxygen Decarburization Furnace(AOD) . Its vibrations increases during speed changeover period due to which unable to vary

speed frequently which is causing energy loss

Root cause

Solution Development:

▪ Installation of 1250KW,690V motors in place ofexisting HT motors

▪ Motors must be coupled directly with ID fans byremoving fluid coupling

▪ Motors must be operated through 1250 KW VFDdrives

▪ Speed of motors can be controlled easily with VFDdrive as per process requirement

Problem Statement: To reduce power and steam consumption at PTF lines

Existing System: Hot Air Dryer

Purpose: It is used to dry the strip which comes from degreasing process. So strip should be dry properly becausenext process is going to be furnace heating(Temp. around 750°C)

Degreasing section and Hot Air Dryer

Page 18: Company Profile - Green Business Centre · Company Profile Energy Mapping & Energy Projects ... 1 Energy Saving by Arresting of Air-Leakage in HRD & Optiisation of Pressure 34.5 245.8

Analysis:

▪ In brainstorming session, we have decided to observe strip dryness after20-25% throttling of dryer because we have two other lines having lowercapacity motor

▪ We observed for 5-7 days and found strip dryness ok so decided toinstall VFD and optimize it to 30Hz

▪ Then again we thought about how to reduce steam consumption andtried to go to internet for a system which can meet our processrequirements

▪ So finally we got to know about Air Knife systemConsumptionbefore VFD

Solution Development:

▪ New Installed System: Air Knife System

▪ System Application:

– Drying of Metal sheets

– Sheet width: 600 mm max

– Sheet speed: 30 m/min

– Drying/Moisture Removal: Top and Bottom Surface

Page 19: Company Profile - Green Business Centre · Company Profile Energy Mapping & Energy Projects ... 1 Energy Saving by Arresting of Air-Leakage in HRD & Optiisation of Pressure 34.5 245.8

Total Energy saving calculation:

▪ Power Consumption before: 183026.4 Kwh/Annam

▪ Steam Consumption before: 242.3 Kg/MT

▪ Power Consumption after: 114060 Kwh/Annam

▪ Steam Consumption after: 44.25 Kg/MT

▪ Total Power Saving(Rs): 5.51 Lacs/Annam

▪ Total Steam Saving(Rs): 47.04 Lacs/Annam

▪ Investment: 2.1 Lacs

Total Overall Saving: 49.3 Lacs/Annum

System Advantages:

1. Improvement in product quality since absolutely no moisture is carried away along with the product

2. High efficiency of the Drying Process

3. The blower is fitted with 10 microns inlet filter and the air coming out of the blower is filtered

4. This is a high rpm blower with balanced and sealed impeller assembly to develop high air velocities for drying

5. The temperature of the outlet air is @ 8 to 10 degree higher than the ambient temperature, which further helpsin the drying process

6. This is a Constant Pressure System because of which there will be consistent product quality

Uniqueness of the system is that it used for energy as well as steam saving with low maintenance cost
