Thus we establish good relationships with customers and create customer-oriented products, services and solutions. For example, in the Healthcare Business, we have opened Nikon Imaging Centers (NIC), which are state-of-the-art imaging facilities established as a partnership between key research institutes at nine locations around the world. NIC provide the latest microscopes such as laser microscopes to researchers in diverse fields. In order to impart deeper knowledge of microscopes, exclusive staff members arrange training programs including imaging technique seminars for beginners up to advanced users. Through these activities to deepen relationships with researchers,
NIC receive feedback from the forefront of research. We employ our global marketing activities to improve existing products and develop new products, while also achieving higher value for customers.
Utilizing feedback from researchers for more
practical product development
One of the functions realized by feedback received at NIC is an “assist guide” employed for inverted research microscope ECLIPSE Ti2. It integrates data from built-in sensors to guide you through operations step by step, and automatically detects setting errors simultaneously. This eliminates user mistakes and enables researchers to fully concentrate on their data.

Creating a bright future with Nikon’s unique point of view
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Meeting held with R&D headquarters staff
The Research & Development Division is working on elemental technologies for next-generation equipment. One of these projects involves R&D of materials used for displays that support “Roll-to-roll processing”*. By forming multiple thin film layers on plastic film substrates, and exposing circuit patterns onto each layer of film as if drawing, Nikon developed a method to create electronic circuits on flexible substrates at an earlier stage. For plastic substrates, processing accuracy was the biggest challenge because they are easily deformed (wave, expansion and contraction) due to the effect of the surrounding environment such as temperature. However, Nikon solved the issue by devising the appropriate materials and exposure process.Such flexible electronics have the potential to be applied to diverse fields due to their characteristics of high flexibility. Nikon continues to advance R&D of
not only lithography systems, but also unprecedented devices and manufacturing techniques including materials and processes.
Basic Technologies that Support Nikon
To strengthen our existing businesses and create new businesses, it is vital to continue basic R&D activities based on a long-term perspective. With our opto-electronics and precision technologies as a foundation, Nikon is conducting R&D in a wide range of technologies, such as optics, precision measurement and manufacturing, image processing, materials, and software and systems.
Built a Platform Utilizing AI
Nikon is focusing on information processing technology including AI, which has been developing rapidly in recent years. Also we are advancing the R&D of technology that enables utilization of AI not only for products but also manufacturing processes. Nikon established a platform structure utilizing AI efficiently and effectively in the year ended March 31, 2018. We are continuing to develop environmental improvement and technological development based on this platform.
Established a Technology Strategy Committee
In order to meet a wider range of social issues and needs initiatively, a Technology Strategy Committee administrated by the president was established in November 2017. This committee conducts research into Nikon’s core competence thoroughly in order to confirm it. Considering social and market trends, the committee formulates medium- and long-term technical strategies to cultivate new fields to be focused on in the future and to improve existing businesses’ competitive power. Through collaboration between our technical strategy and management plans, we will promote R&D efficiently and effectively in synergy with the management strategy point of view.

Creating new value through innovation in manufacturing
MANUFACTURING
One of the advantages common to Nikon products ranging from optical components to digital cameras, microscopes and FPD/semiconductor lithography systems is a superior quality standard that responds to customers' trust. Regarding quality control, the principles are included in the Basic Quality Policy, and Nikon established the Quality Control Directive (QCD) as its basic rules for actual management to be jointly applied by all companies of Nikon group. While every product is intensively investigated throughout our manufacturing processes, finished products are further comprehensively checked, realizing the strictest quality control system. As a result, the consistent product quality of "Made by Nikon" is ensured worldwide, regardless of the production site. Also, we have newly established the Production Technology Division as an organization to connect company-wide divisions horizontally while concentrating optical design functions in Japan that were formerly
distributed among multiple divisions at the Optical Engineering Division, and optical components manufacturing at Tochigi Nikon. As well as the reassessment of manufacturing procedures and improvement in procurement, we constantly work to reduce manufacturing lead times and costs on a global scale in pursuit of creative and efficient manufacturing. Moreover, we are continuously evolving manufacturing in order to create optical products that deliver new values with improved productivity and efficiency as well as higher quality, via the synergetic effect of technologies and techniques and by the adoption of the latest manufacturing facilities and technologies.
High-function cell production using work stations
Sendai Nikon Corporation, which manufactures Nikon D5 digital SLR cameras and other products, installed a high-functioning cell production system in which a single worker handles several processes to improve production efficiency. The work station was developed and installed to support workers by automatically supplying parts in order of assembly as well as adjusting driver torque.
The Nikon Junior Master Craftsperson system is
newly established
We recognize certain employees as Nikon Master Craftspersons: technicians with exceptionally advanced and important skills, experience, knowledge and the ability to execute. They take charge of manufacturing the parts of products that require extremely high precision and quality. We have also established a new system to appoint persons with the ability and performance to become Nikon Master Craftspersons in the future as Nikon Junior Master Craftspersons, and we appointed 28 people to this in 2017. Highly advanced traditional skills are utilized even in the latest products.
