our History of Integrity

The Story of Crossland Construction

Ivan Crossland Sr. was born to his father, Albert Crossland (a zinc/lead miner) and his mother, Lorraine in Cardin, Oklahoma on October 20, 1927, just two years before the Great Depression. Ivan joined the work force at the age of twelve after the death of his father in order to support his mother and younger brother. Ivan was employed by Eagle Picher until the closing of the Oklahoma and Kansas mines. From there he followed mining work to Arizona where he was drafted into the Korean War. He reported for duty in Los Angeles, California where he met his future bride, Virginia Ferrell. Ivan was sent to Japan and entered into combat as sergeant, where he served on the front lines for 14 months. After the war, he was stationed in California, where Ivan and Virginia were married. Ivan was employed by Southwestern Bell for two years. Ivan then moved Virginia and their new son, Bennie to Treece, Kansas only a few miles from his birth place, there he once again worked for Eagle Picher in the last of the regions mining activity and served as mayor, fire chief, and coach of the Treece Tigers baseball team. After the final closing of the mines he went to work for Gulf Chemical in Galena, Kansas. Ivan was always in search of ways to feed his ever-growing family. One of Ivan’s famous business ventures was a joint partnership with three other miners. The four men leased an old mine with plans to shoot the remaining pillars of ore out. Putting all their assets on the line for the mining lease, they had to borrow fifty dollars for a mule to pull the ore carts. All set to start, Ivan and his partners applied the harness to their trusty mule and lowered him into the shaft. On their way down, the men informed Ivan that the mule had passed away, most likely of a heart attack. But Ivan, an optimist through and through, performed CPR on the mule by jumping on its stomach. The mule never revived, but Ivan’s optimism served him well in the years to come. With eight children now at home, Ivan never stopped searching for new ways to provide for his family. In 1972, he started a business that later would evolve into Crossland Construction Company. While

delivering a load of concrete tile culvert to Columbus, Kansas, Ivan found himself following a redi-mix truck. Knowing Columbus did not have a redi-mix, he visited the Chamber of Commerce to see if the town could support a concrete company. After borrowing $10,000 from the Columbus State Bank, Ivan set out to piece together a concrete plant using an old portable batch plant, a one-yard truck, and a metal shack, which was given to him. Ivan quickly found the one-yard truck would not be enough to run the plant. In a desperate move he tried to receive more funding for a second truck. The crushing words of the banker, “Ivan if tomorrow was the end of the world I couldn’t loan you another penny,” left him down but not out. He set out to find a new way to raise money and found his answer with the Gulf Chemical Credit Union. At last, he was up and running with a four yard truck, his one yarder and a work force of his four sons, Bennie (12), Mike (10), Ivan Jr. (9), and Curtis (8), Ivan delivered concrete during the day, and continued to work nights at Gulf Chemical for $2.75 an hour. In 1978, Ivan started Crossland Construction Company, a metal building company, and added to his work force as each of his children graduated high school. During the course of the past 30 some years Crossland has became a multi-million dollar construction firm, and ranks among the nation’s top general contractors. All six of Ivan Sr.’s sons now run Crossland Construction. Through hard work, optimism and a love for his family, Ivan has instilled a formula for success in his company and a “Nothing is Impossible” attitude to all who knew him.

our Company Traditions

Building a Strong Tradition Crossland Construction Company is one of the oldest and most respected general contracting firms in the area. With our establishment in 1978, we have built a strong tradition of personal service, excellent workmanship, fairness, attention to detail, and timely completion in our construction projects.

Our Niche While some contractors are known for building a specific type of project, Crossland builds a wide variety of projects for a specific type of client. Our niche in the construction community is serving project owners and architects who want personal service and involvement from their contractor, who want exceptional quality in the work, and the best value in their projects. We have a complete Construction Management Division and provide Design/Build services as well. We are also still one of the primary forces in the hard bid market. With this balance, we can “keep our pencil sharp” on projects we bid and provide valuable input to the design process regarding costs, construction methods and materials on negotiated contracts. On any project, we can take an active role performing a significant portion of the work with our own forces. We set the pace for the work and we set the standard for quality!

Our Goal Our primary goal in any construction project is to satisfy the needs and exceed the expectations of our clients. In this, we have been successful. Over 65% of our clients have been repeat clients or architects. Our main focus to our clients is quality, in the most complex projects.

Our Relationships Crossland Construction Company has also developed and maintained strong relationships with local subcontractors and suppliers. Realizing that our capabilities and experiences alone cannot complete a construction project, we operate in a manner portraying the respect Crossland has for these relationships. We believe it a most valuable asset to maintain positive relationships with these contractors. In this way, we continue to provide our clients with the best pricing, most cost effective means of construction, and the ability to have adequate, qualified manpower on our projects when the schedule requires.

Our Expertise Crossland Construction Company brings to each of our clients our expertise, our personal attention, and our exceptional standards of quality and fairness. We can satisfy your needs and exceed your expectations!

our Extended Family

When you set out on a Journey, pick a Solid Team

Since 1978, Crossland Construction Company has provided extensive construction services to Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and surrounding regions. Crossland Construction was founded in Columbus, Kansas by Ivan Crossland Sr. and today operates under the leadership of his six sons and over 800 associates. We are a group of people that believe greatly in a “team” approach and work in conjunction with our owner/client, design firms, local and state officials, and sub-contractors to achieve the goal of constructing the desired facility within the time and budget allotted and to the stand of quality that is desired. Every employee is a valuable asset to our company and without our “teamwork” attitude we would not be one of the nations’ largest construction companies. When you choose Crossland Construction as your contractor you will be getting a team of dedicated individuals whose top priority is to operate with integrity, safety, quality and most of all customer satisfaction.

Crossland Management Team!

“… The Crossland Construction Management Team was diligent, professional, conscientious and great to work with thru the entire project. I could not have asked for a better team and end result. I look forward to working with Crossland Construction on future projects.”

our Safety Record

One of the Nations’ Safest Contractors with a MOD Factor of 0.60!

We strive for a constant effort to educate and motivate our employees towards safety. Each project has an individual plan to ensure that safety is the number one priority each and every day. Due to our highly developed Safety Program and the consistent drive behind it, Crossland enjoys an excellent safety reputation throughout the construction industry. We strive to keep our job sites a safe working environment for all employees and visitors. In 2008, Crossland started a new program called S.T.O.P. - Safety Through Organization and Planning. This Program is designed to help improve safety through training and education, and to make everyone aware that safety is priority on every job. Every employee at Crossland has attended The S.T.O.P. training and signed a personal commitment to be an active participant in helping themselves and others to work safe, everyday. All new employees are issued a safety green hard hat for the first 6 months of employment. This allows the superintendents to distinguish the newer employees to make sure that they are performing their tasks in a safe manner.

Every job site receives scheduled and unannounced inspections by a corporate safety officer. If necessary, a full-time safety officer is assigned to the job site. The safety officers take pictures of any unsafe acts on the job site and turn them in to management so they can address the problem and fix it. Crossland rewards safety with employee prizes as well as a brand new truck that is given away in a drawing when One Million Man Hours are achieved without a lost time accident. New this year is our Safety Bucks which will allow each employee to earn credits for hours worked safely and they are able to purchase items such as jackets, boots etc. with their earnings. By keeping the accident rate at our workplaces low, our productivity stays high - in return your project will not lag behind schedule due to an unsafe work environment. In over 30 years of contracting, we have steadily pursued company-wide safety. This effort is evident in our EMR rating of 0.60, which is considerably less than the industry average of 1.0.

We work safe because our Most Important job is at Home!
