In January 2008, Tata Motors launched Tata Nano, the least expensive production car in the world at aboutRs. 1,00,000 (US $2,500). The supermini carwas unveiled during the Auto Expo 2008 exhibition in PragatiMaidan, New Delhi.

Tata has faced controversy over developing the Nano as some environmentalists are concerned that the

launch of such a low-priced car could lead to mass motorization in India with adverse effects on pollutionand global warming. Tata has set up a factory in Sanand, Gujarat and the first Nanos are to roll out summer2009.

Tata Nano Europa has been developed for sale in developed economies and is to hit markets in 2010 whilethe normal Nano should hit markets in South Africa, Kenya and countries in Asia and Africa by late 2009. Abattery version is also planned.

The Company has been a front-runner in introducing state-of-the-art power technologies. Tata installedIndias first 500 MW unit at Trombay, the first 150 MW pumped storage unit at Bhira, and a flue gasdesulphurizationplant forpollution control at Trombay. At 2.4% the Company's transmission & distributionlosses are among the lowest in the country. Tata Power has served Mumbais consumers for over ninedecades. At present company is engaged in sectors like:

    Electricity Generation

    Electricity Transmission

    Electricity Distribution

Electricity Generation is the process of creating electricity from other forms of energy.

The fundamental principles of electricity generation were discovered during the 1820s and early 1830s bythe British scientist Michael Faraday. His basic method is still used today: electricity is generated by themovement of a loop of wire, or disc of copper between the poles of a magnet.[1]

Forelectric utilities, it is the first process in the delivery of electricity to consumers. The other processes, electric power transmission, electricity distribution, and electrical power storage and recovery usingpumpedstorage methods are normally carried out by the electrical power industry.

Electricity is most often generated at a power station by electromechanical generators, primarily driven by

heat engines fueled by chemical combustion ornuclear fission but also by other means such as the kineticenergy of flowing water and wind. There are many other technologies that can be and are used to generateelectricity such as solarphotovoltaics and geothermal power.

Electric power transmission or "high voltage electric transmission" is the bulk transfer of electrical energy, from generating plants (historically hydroelectric, nuclear or coal fired but now also wind, solar, geothermaland other forms of renewable energy) to substations located near to population centers. This is distinct fromthe local wiring between high voltage substations and customers, which is typically referred to as electricity

distribution.Transmission lines, when interconnected with each other, become high voltage transmission networks. Inthe US, these are typically referred to as "power grids" or sometimes simply as "the grid". North Americahas three major grids: The Western Interconnect; The Eastern Interconnect and the Electric ReliabilityCouncil of Texas (or ERCOT) grid.

Historically, transmission and distribution lines were owned by the same company, but over the last decadeor so many countries have introduced market reforms that have led to the separation of the electricitytransmission business from the distribution business.[1]

Transmission lines mostly use three phase alternating current (AC), although single phase AC is sometimesused in railway electrification systems. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology is used only forvery long distances (typically greater than 400 miles); undersea cables (typically longer than 30 miles); or

for connecting two AC networks that are not synchronized.

Electricity is transmitted at high voltages (110 kV or above) to reduce the energy lost in long distancetransmission. Power is usually transmitted through overhead power lines. Underground power transmissionhas a significantly higher cost and greater operational limitations but is sometimes used in urban areas orsensitive locations.
