Over 10 years of Finnish Design

Since the year 2000 Tonfisk Design’s products have become a mark of Finnish and Scandinavian Design and their products can now be found in shops and homes worldwide.

Bored of seeing more of the same, Tonfisk Design was established in 1999 by two young designers (Tony Alfström, Finland, Brian Keaney, Ireland) to market and produce objects which are not mere variations.

Tonfisk Design started out on the appropriately named Lemuntie (Stinky Road) in Helsinki but in 2007 moved to Finland’s Turku.

Many other things have happened in the company over its history, including the departure of one of its founders, however the company’s aim remains the same, to become one of Scandinavia and Finland’s best known design brands.

‘Tonfisk’ means ‘tuna fish’ in Swedish. The name was chosen late one Finnish winter night because no other name seemed to fit the values of the company- innovative, personal, Finnish.

‘Tonfisk’ didn’t seem to either at the time but we liked it. Funnily nowadays it seems to fit just right!

All Tonfisk’s ceramics are produced by hand at Tonfisk’s own factory in Turku to ensure good quality, the possibility to innovate and the well being of those who make a Tonfisk product.

Tonfisks philosophy"Form follows function doesn't mean all objects have to look the same" is built on Louis Sullivan's functionalist dictum. However in spite of its cliché-status it describes best our design philosophy.

Tonfisk products are created with a vision of not producing yet another shape but a whole new idea.

AchievementsDuring the years since its launch at Ambiente 2000, Tonfisk Design has received both widespread publicity, enjoyed considerable recognition as a prominent Finnish design brand, and has been invited to participate in several design exhibitions in Finland and abroad.
