Introduction

At our school, community service is a very important aspect of our learning environment. Each grade does about 2 or 3 projects every year. This year, our 7th class has been participating in Stop Hunger Now, Heifer International, and gleaning.

Stop Hunger Now

Stop Hunger Now is a Raleigh based organization that distributes food and other life- saving aid around the world. Their vision: to end world hunger in our lifetime. Their mission: to provide food and life-saving aid to the world’s most destitute and hungry in the most efficient, effective, and sustainable manner. They provide immediate aid to the countries in need through their meal-packaging program. We had the chance to package these dehydrated, high protein, and healthy meals. They are used in crisis situations and are given to school feeding programs for schools and orphanages around the world. Along with the meals, medicine, medical supplies, and other items are sent to help the people in need. On April 27th our grade set up a meal packaging station in the school gym. Then, in only 2 hours we packaged 10,080 meals.

Heifer International

Heifer International is an organization that donates different types of animals to villages and families in need. They give animals so that the families have a long term food source. We have been raising money for this organization by having bake sales and collecting money through Read to Feed.

Gleaning

Gleaning is where volunteers go out in the fields and pick the extra crops the farmers didn’t harvest. We had the chance to glean a sweet potato field, and everything we picked went to the local food bank.

Overview

These are some of our many Magellan community service projects. Others include raising money for sick or dying children through Make A Wish, Hearts for Haiti, and collecting soda tabs for the Ronald McDonald Houses. Through these activities, we can make a difference in the world.
