Coming in 2019 Infrastructure Projects for Oberon In 2018
Council secured significant funding for some exciting community
infrastructure projects across the local government area . Many of
these projects support the Oberon community’s belief that active
communities are health communities better able to respond
positively and constructively to present and future challenges
including the current drought conditions.
Throughout 2019 Council will be working hard to deliver these
projects that will make Oberon an even better place to live, work,
visit and play. Work will commence shortly on the construction of
the $500K Indoor Fitness Centre which will be located within the
Oberon Sporting Precinct next to the Oberon Swimming Pool. This
project has been funded under Round 2 of the State
Government’s Stronger Country Communities Program and will
construct a new 700 square metre building. The front half of the
Fitness Centre will be fully enclosed with an air conditioned
gymnasium space. The rear half of the building will include a half
sized basketball court to allow for outdoor fitness activities.
This project received unprecedented support from the Oberon
community with more than 550 people making submissions to Council
to support the construction of the indoor fitness centre for
Oberon. Also funded under the SCCF, the Oberon Pool Complex will be
improved by the partial enclosure of the north eastern corner and
southern side of the roof structure of the pool by way of
translucent louvers and shutters and rollers to provide greater

solar access to the pool while restricting cool winds. Meanwhile
work on the Oberon Skatepark at the Oberon Common and Grandstands
at the Recreational Ground will commence shortly . Village
communities are already enjoying recent upgrades to playground
facilities at Black Springs, Burraga and O’Connell. In the tourism
space a $210,000 rebranding and new town signage project will
reimagine existing town signage used in the Oberon LGA helping to
welcome visitors to our beautiful town. Primitive campground
facilities at the Reef Reserve will be improved by constructing
campsites, including fireplaces, and upgrading the access road into
the Reef Reserve. On our roads the safety of all road users and the
efficiency of transporting logs to the Oberon Timber Mill will be
improved by a number of projects including installation of safety
barriers on Abercrombie Road, funded by the Saving Lives on Country
Roads Programme, and the upgrade of The Meadows Road funded under
the Fixing Country Roads Programme. Heritage projects that received
funding in 2018 included a $110,000 project to conserve O’Connell’s
Earth Buildings, the upgrade of the platform of the Heritage Listed
Oberon Railway Station, and the construction of a Memorial Wall at
Black Springs commemorating the Bicentenary of the discovery of
Black Springs area by explorer Charles Throsby. During times of
drought keeping the Oberon community socially connected will be
supported by a range of community events based in the O’ Connell
Valley and Fish River area funded by the Drought Communities
programme including an old fashioned bush dance and the annual
youth week activities. Funding for essential infrastructure
including the replacement of the ageing Oberon Sewerage Treatment
Plant (STP) has been a key focus for Council over the past four
years. Council is actively seeking additional funding to meet the
$15 million cost of replacing the STP. A total of $4.95 million has
already been secured. As we approach the State Election in March
2019 more funding announcements for other community infrastructure
projects are expected. So watch this space.

International Women’s Day Lunch
Saturday 9th of March 12.30pm at the
Robert Hooper Community Centre
The annual International Women’s Day Mayoral Lunch will take on
a different feel in 2019. I thought this year it would be great to
give Oberon women who would normally be at work the opportunity to
join us, hence the event will be held on Saturday March 9 at the
Robert Hooper Community Centre commencing at 12.30pm. IWD allows
the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women and
acknowledge their contribution to the fabric of our society, which
has been substantial. The first International Women's Day occurred
in 1911, today IWD is celebrated and supported by millions all over
the world, the story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no
single person nor to any one organisation but to the collective
efforts of all who care about human rights.
This year’s theme is -#BalanceforBetter. A call to action for
gender equality not only socially but economically, culturally and
politically. In keeping with the theme this year’s keynote speaker
is Ms Sue West. Sue has had an interesting life, born in Cowra her
early career was in nursing and midwifery. Sue entered politics in
1987 and was elected as a Labor Senator in 1990, retiring in 2002
an interesting time for women in politics. Sue now resides in
Bathurst and spends part of her time supporting the Anglican
Diocese. Tickets for the event are always in demand so to secure a
place early I suggest you ring Sharon Swannell on 6329 8151. This
is a free event for the women of Oberon so please take the
opportunity to join us for what is always a great afternoon.

Monday 19th November 2018 was the official start of the new
school year for Oberon High School Students. This aligns all year
groups with the compressed curriculum structure of Senior College
and students started the week by moving to the next year group,
that is, a 2018 Year 8 student is in Year 9 and will finish Year 9
in November 2019. In line with the rollover to the new school year,
Oberon High School has been undergoing some changes within the
school’s discipline, wellbeing and positive behaviour for learning
(PBL) structures. The PBL team, led by Miss Shannon Marshall,
reviewed a lot of the past systems in the school and have decided
to re-vamp them in one way or another.
Part of the re-launch of PBL was the introduction of our new
school mascot: Benny the bull. Benny was kindly donated to Oberon
High School by the local roller derby and will appear throughout
all kinds of school events. He is designed to strengthen school
spirit and encourage students to engage in the school expectations;
respectful, responsible, right to be safe and resilient.
New Mascot Helps Reinforce School Expectations: Respectful,
Responsible, Right to be Safe and Resilient.

As the level of the Oberon Dam has fallen below 50% capacity,
Level 1 Water Restrictions have been introduced effective from
Thursday 13 December 2018. Level 1 water restrictions are designed
to reduce consumption and the impacts on the Oberon Dam during dry
periods. Details of Level 1 Water Restrictions are as follows:
RESIDENTIAL GARDENS- Fixed hoses and sprinklers connected to the
Oberon reticulated water system are banned between the hours of 8am
and 4pm. There is no restriction on hand held hoses. More stringent
restrictions will be introduced if the Oberon Dam falls to a level
below 40% capacity. Level 2 water restrictions will be applied and
details will be widely advertised. The community’s awareness and
contribution to water efficiency is acknowledged and consumers are
reminded that during dry periods additional reduction in
consumption is required to sustain our water supply. These
restrictions will continue until further advised. Further
information about saving water at home, in the garden and in your
business can be
found on Oberon Council’s website at:
