Why do they call you ‘Uncle’?In our culture if someone is older than you, you don’t call him by his name but you call him ‘Uncle’ instead. It’s a term of endearment. Customers hear staff calling me ‘Uncle’ so they do it as well. Ideally, I’d like to be an agony uncle and give people help and advice all the time. Whoever I meet during the course of the day I aim to leave a little bit happier than they were before. That’s my motto!

What brought you to Didsbury?I’ve been in the fruit and veg business for 24 years now and at one time I had a fruit and veg concession in Kwik Save, Radcliffe. When the store closed down I lost my job, but I’ve always believed that whatever happens in this life happens for the best. In 2003, a friend was going on holiday to Pakistan and asked me to manage his shop in Didsbury for two to three weeks. I loved Didsbury so much that when he came back I asked him to sell me the shop – and here I am today!

How do you see the future for independent businesses

in the village?It’s very, very difficult; the rents are astronomical. We independents feed off each other, so that when one bites the dust you wonder who’s going to be next. On a positive note this corner of Wilmslow Road is known as the golden corner. There are four or five little gems – independents, including ourselves. We work together and send customers to each other. If you had a negative mind set or small heart it would be very difficult, but there’s no rivalry between us. And if we survive this economic downturn, I believe things will improve. People are now seeing supermarkets for what they are and they’ll go back to the independent shops.

You’re often to be found discussing spiritual matters and self-realisation over the counter. Is it possible to be truly happy?One of the biggest causes of unhappiness is the pursuit of happiness. Think about it: ‘I want happiness!’ If you follow ego and desire then you’ll never satisfy yourself because it’s not possible to achieve everything you want. There is one absolute certainty in life and that’s that we’re going

to die. Remember that we’re only here for the blink of an eye in the history of time. Each moment is a new moment and that’s where you’ll find happiness – in the moment!

Tell me about your passion for snooker. There’s a picture in your shop of you playing Jimmy White.Snooker is my addiction and I played for 30 years. I was taught by John Spencer (three times World Champion) and played at his club in Bolton. Dennis Taylor, at the time he was World Champion, came to the club opening and I played him, but lost on the black. In 2006, Jimmy White came to the club and I got the chance to play him. These guys can’t play safe – they’re risk-takers – and this time I got lucky. I fluked the brown and then cleared up. The first thing I did was phone my wife!

Complete the sentence, ‘I love Didsbury because …’‘ … the people are broad-minded, well-travelled with receptive minds. They have energy, purpose and seem happy to be alive. In all the time I’ve been here I’ve never had an awkward customer.’

Mohammed Shafiq famously dispenses fruit, veg and wisdom from Fresh Save in Didsbury and is known affectionately as ‘Uncle’ by staff and customers alike. As a practitioner of Sufism, the mystical dimension of Islam, he is a passionate advocate of peace, tolerance and self-purification. Here, the father-of-four talks about life, spirituality and beating snooker champ, Jimmy ‘The Whirlwind’ White, at his own game!

Why warm up & cool down?

Warming up before sport AND down after, can help

enhance performance and protect from injury. It also reduces sudden stress on the cardio-vascular system. It is not about trying to stretch cold tissues as this will never happen and has no benefit.Warm up can be passive, using heat sources like a hot shower (prior to swimming for example), hot packs etc - this type of warm up is used mostly when rehabilitating an area after injury when you can’t run around. Active warm up involves increasing the overall body temperature gradually;

this will increase blood flow to the muscles.

The amount of warm up depends on how fit you are already – a fitter athlete will need to warm up for longer! Plan to warm up for about 15 minutes prior to sport or pushing yourself in your chosen activity.

General warm up exercises include jogging and light aerobics (enough to cause mild sweating) and involve gradually increasing from a small range of joint movements to a full range, thereby dynamically stretching tissues.

After exercise it is IMPORTANT to reverse the process. Stopping intense exercise

immediately causes an increase on the cardiovascular system, causing the heart rate to rise. Warming down also helps reduce lactic acid build-up thereby reducing sore muscles.

It is 1963 and the young-ish couples (educated, thirty-something) of suburban Tarbox, New England, enjoy new opportunities, sexual freedom and an affluence undreamed of by their parents’ post-war austerity generation.Welcome to the post-pill paradise!

In a world before AIDS and ‘drink safe’ awareness, it is ever cocktail hour and the ten couples in Updike’s novel come together for tennis, word games and adultery. Under the leadership of their ringmaster Freddy Thorne, town dentist and occasional abortionist, they form a charmed circle of friendship. Local joiner Piet Hanema plays court jester to the group, his compulsive womanising tolerated, on the whole, with wry humour (‘Piet … Rhymes with indiscreet’) until his affair with Foxy Whitman, one half of the newest couple in town, threatens to expose the cracks within the small, close-knit community.

There is an elegiac tone to Updike’s novel; a sense of

innocence lost and of longing for a bygone Golden Age. There is, after all, something curiously innocent – childlike even – in the couples’ careless, unashamed hedonism and their enjoyment of more liberated times. But hedonism has its price and in every Eden lurks a serpent. Just as their country’s history takes a dark and tragic turn, the couples must eventually grow up and face the consequences of their actions. Updike’s luminous prose at times reads like poetry and he writes with extraordinary insight and empathy. His flawed protagonists are neither judged nor exonerated, but portrayed as beautifully, movingly human.

They used to hang men at Four Turnings in the old days…Thus Daphne du Maurier, inimitable mistress of the iconic first line, immerses the reader in a world of cruelty, menace and dark intrigue. The rotting corpse of a wife-killer, dangling from the gallows drop, is the dominant image

of the first few pages, and haunts the protagonist, Philip Ashley, throughout the novel. It also introduces the idea of uxoricide as the novel’s major theme.

Learning of the untimely death of his beloved cousin and guardian, Ambrose, in Florence, young Philip’s horrified suspicions fall upon Ambrose’s widow, Cousin Rachel. When Rachel herself arrives in Cornwall soon afterwards, Philip, now sole heir to Ambrose’s large estate, is prepared to loathe her but instead finds himself falling under the spell of his beautiful, mysterious cousin.

Under the first-person narration of Philip Ashley, a brooding

tale of obsession and paranoia unfolds as the novel’s tension builds, slowly but inexorably, to its boiling point. Meanwhile, the twisty-turny narrative teases the reader at every page-turn and nothing is as it seems. Who is Cousin Rachel; innocent beauty or scheming adventuress whose lovely, dark eyes mask murderous intent? Is Philip’s account, in the absence of any other point of view, to be taken at face value or dismissed as the toxic product of misogyny and a fevered brain? Who, in the end, is the real victim? It is a story that invites countless re-readings and, like its eponymous heroine, never loses its allure.

Soloists from Didsbury-based Northern Chamber Orchestra all

set for first ever performance in Chetham’s new Carole Nash Hall.The spotlight will be on top soloists from the Didsbury-based Northern Chamber Orchestra as they present a sparkling concert for Spring in the Carole Nash Hall at Chetham’s School of Music, Monday 15 April, 7.30pm. It’s a year since NCO last performed in Manchester city centre and this April’s concert, hosted by Chetham’s, is part of a new learning and

performance collaboration with the school. It’s the first time members of the orchestra have performed in the new, state of the art concert facilities at Chets.

Nicholas Ward, NCO’s Artistic Director and one of the soloists for the concert, said: “We’re really looking forward to playing in the Carole Nash Hall, which is visually and acoustically, a fantastic venue to showcase ensemble playing at its very best.”

Audiences can enjoy the lively rapport between players as the NCO soloists, joined by pianist Anne-Marie Hastings, perform one of the all-time, popular

classical pieces, Schubert’s deliciously delightful Trout Quintet. The Sunny Schubert concert features a joyful programme, which also includes a great piece by Bach – Adagio and Fugue for solo violin, Mahler’s heavenly Piano Quartet and Halvorsen’s brilliantly witty take on Handel’s Passacaglia for violin and cello.

It is fitting that these two artists exhibit their work in the recently re-opened

wonderful Old Parsonage in Didsbury, (now run as a community hub by Didsbury Parsonage Trust) sharing their joy of discovery of the unique beauty of South Manchester Landscapes.Liz Scantlebury’s landscapes are inspired by the changing moods of the Mersey Valley of South Manchester. She is fascinated by the colours, shapes and light provided by the backdrop of the landscape. She sees the natural world as a shifting array of endless combinations of colour and composition, always entirely unique. Her work captures the intrinsic beauty of a moment in nature.

Liz is a South Manchester artist, who studied BA Hons. Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design. She works as Lead artist for the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care NHS Trust in South Manchester

and she has sold her work internationally.

Anna Creighton graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a BA Hons. in Embroidery and has always had an interest in structure and form, both natural and man-made. Using the sewing machine to sketch out many of her images, this exhibtion features textile embellished watercolours to depict familiar scenes around South Manchester. Her interests and inspiration come from the continuous lines within the environment along with the tactile qualities of everything around us.

Anna works as a freelance artist and is employed as a textile artist for the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust. She also runs her own handmade-toy business, Sockees from her studio in Chorlton.

The Exhibition runs from 6th April to 6th May at The Old Parsonage Gallery, Stenner Lane, Didsbury. Open 9.30 am to 5.30 pm every day.

To complete the fundraising needed to restore the

Lapwing Lane Arcade canopy, FOLLA (Friends of Lapwing Lane Arcade) is asking ‘Friends’ if they would donate further money by sponsoring one of the 240 panes of glass required for the restoration. We propose to remember those who’ve made this restoration possible – and remind future generations of what has been done – by erecting a plaque to be placed on the arcade when the work is complete. If you wish, and if you are happy to donate a minimum of £100,

we would like to include your name, or that of your family, on the plaque. Panes will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The introductory words on the plaque will be simple, saying something like:

“Friends of Lapwing Lane Arcade

At the time of its 100th birthday in 2013 the people of this neighbourhood organised and funded the restoration of the verandah in front of these shops. In particular we recognise the contributions of….”

Serves 4You will need :

Pitta bread to serve four

2–3 fresh tomatoes, sliced

Fresh basil leaves

Semi-dried (sometimes called sunblush) tomatoes, marinated

Baba ganoush (see recipe below) or hummus, to taste

For your baba ganoush...1 large aubergine

1 clove garlic, crushed

Pinch of salt

1–2 tbsp lemon juice

1 tbsp tahini

Pinch of ground cumin

Extra virgin olive oil

Smoked paprika

Salad pizzetteswith baba ganoush, sunblush tomatoes and basil

1. If using hummus, start at step 4. Otherwise, preheat the grill to high. Prick the aubergine with a fork and grill, turning occasionally, until the skin blisters and blackens all over.

2. Leave to cool and peel off the skin. Leave the aubergine flesh in a sieve to drain for 10 minutes.

3. With a hand blender, mix

the aubergine, garlic, salt, tahini and cumin. Adjust the seasoning to taste.

4. Toast the pitta bread and arrange tomato slices and basil leaves on top. Add 1–2 tbsp of baba ganoush (or hummus, if using) and drizzle with olive oil.

5. Sprinkle with smoked paprika for a delicious, intense flavour.

Well it’s been six months since Giddy Goat Toys

opened in place of Rumpus on Albert Hill Street. It’s been great settling into life in Didsbury and one of the things that has made it such a positive experience is the warm welcome I’ve received from staff, customers and from other independent businesses. It’s lovely when customers take the time to ask us how the shop is doing and tell us that they’re happy that the shop has stayed open as a toy shop or to say how much they like it.

Of course it’s not all plain sailing. We were hit by the ‘South Manchester Conman’ which left us out of pocket by over £100. We’ve had an empty unit next to us for over 4 months, which doesn’t help footfall and of course we’re trading in difficult economic conditions (my family thought I was insane to take a shop on during a recession) plus the percentage of shopping done online is increasing annually and as far as toys go there is a big move to screen based

play. Cashflow is a constant juggling act and trying to second guess what toys to

stock can be challenging. We’ve tried

some new things

like

Moshi Monsters and Magic Chocolate but it’s the old favourites such as the wooden toys, the games and puzzles by Orchard Toys, lego, playmobil, books and craft sets which are the staples and reliable sellers.

So why do I it and what does the future hold? Well it’s not for the money that’s for sure, but on a practical level I get to take my children to school every day and pick them up twice a week. I love the variety of jobs running a shop involves, even the admin and financial stuff, but mainly choosing the new stock and interacting with the customers! And I love being part of the local community in a way that I never did before I had children and ran a local business and I think that many people are now becoming aware that if they don’t use their local shops then they will close. In Didsbury we’ve witnessed this with the loss of Linen, the Farm Shop and Elm and on a wider scale businesses such as HMV, Jessops and Blockbuster to name a few. Essentially my family are probably right. I must be insane.

However forewarned is forearmed. Knowing it’s going to be tough has meant that I put a lot of work into choosing products I feel offer genuine value for money because they’ve got lots of play value – surely it’s better to buy a couple of toys your child will really enjoy playing with, than lots of cheaper tat that breaks easily or gets discarded quickly. We’ve sourced toys that you won’t find on the supermarket

shelves and we offer help, advice, gift wrapping, play tables for the kids to play on whilst you look round the shop and a chat and a cup of tea if you want, which you just won’t get in the supermarket or online.

So we’re being positive but it’s tough out there, so good folks of Didsbury I urge you, if you don’t want empty units down your high street, use your local shops. Check out the fantastic shoes in Andrew Graham shoes (I am coveting some super warm boots for next winter already), have a browse round the fabulous clothes shops on your doorstep with Bond and Fonda, go into the treasure trove that is Harriet and Dee, use your local grocers, fishmonger and butchers (horse free products guaranteed!) and treat yourselves to a night out at one of the great bars and restaurants right here in Didsbury. If you’ve come into Giddy Goat Toys during the last six months then thank you. Your custom is much appreciated. I hope we had what you wanted but if you didn’t then let me know. We’re your local toy shop, so will always do our best to help you.

I was sorry to see the farm shop in the Village

closed and desolate when I passed that way last week. It had clearly not managed to attract sufficient customers in its short and hopeful life.I am just another customer who had been glad to see this addition to the range of shops in the butchery range, with vegetables and breads and other groceries. Why did it die?

Its prices were too high compared with our Tesco-dominated retail trade (2 supermarkets within 1/2 mile of each other and a third smaller

Tesco in the range of cafes by the clock tower). Tesco must have been pleased to kill off a competing grocer, and I can sympathise with Tesco over that. And yet I have a sneaking feeling that we Didsbury shoppers should have had a more far-sighted reaction to the farm shop’s opening.

We should have welcomed the produce of local farmers, recognising that they cannot compete with the supermarkets on price. What price the fresher food, what value our local produce, grown 10 or 15 miles away instead of being flown in from Africa at great expense and in vast quantities?

The annual landscape show celebrating the Northern

scenes is back in Everyman Art Gallery – come to see Tuesday – Sunday 12-5pm.Exhibiting artists include: John Hoyland, Simon Plum, Patrick Cunningham, Sophie Berger, Pauline Parsons, Louise Naimian, Ewa Konior, Marie Wood, Judith Donaughy, Anna Violet, Rob Jenkins, Helena Hulova-Wall, Nick Walker, Ron Coleman, Sylvia Paul, David Bez and others.

Patrick Cunningham’s Manchester cotton industry series of paintings must be the highlight of the show. Not only the sheer scale of the oil paintings takes one aback but also the works of art can be studied at many levels of cultural and historical understanding. All the above is solidified by the technical ability which Patrick acquired by years in an architectural

practice.

Patrick likes to play with words and talks about the texture and fabric and its making in society whilst talking about his cotton industry project.

His work Cotton Pickers and Royal Exchange (pictured top right) can be viewed in the gallery, the rest on the web site www.everymanartgallery.com.

The artist of the month for April is Rob Jenkins. An artist local to Chorlton, Rob works in oil and acrylics with added texture to the surface. His cubist descriptions of trees and other subject matter come alive thanks to Rob’s dutiful observation skills coupled with knowledge capturing the inner beauty of his subjects. Without any aesthetical pretence the decomposition as well as balanced and flowing unity of the subject matter gives the paintings gravity and lightness at the same time.

Rob’s artwork marks an established and highly collectable artist producing work of consistency and inner strength and spirit.

The start of April brings with it that combination of

excitement and panic for the gardener. The garden is emerging rapidly from its winters sleep bringing with it the first blossoms of the year and the ebb and flow of flowering plants beginning in earnest brings with it a wide-eyed thrill of what’s to come. The panic comes from two things - not wanting to miss out on the brief splendour of even the most modest of spring plants - easily done when balancing desk and recreation, and an existential garden angst located in bigger worries about the escaping year-or is that just me? To celebrate the offerings of spring in April, here are a few plants that will shower us with loveliness short and long. The woodland-mimicking canopy of spring provided by our trees yet to come into leaf, is perfect for a range of lovely plants – some a bit different from the standard bluebells and cyclamen.

Epimedium is commonly seen as a low growing evergreen plant in shady corners but perhaps try some more vibrant

varieties such as ‘Orange Queen’ or ‘Fire Dragon’, their names giving a clue to their hues. Epimedium x warleyense is a particularly striking variety with candy pinks, yellows and oranges held on stately stems.

Another good woodlander is Erythronium or Dog’s Tooth Violet (which describes the pointed shape of the bulbs), a clump forming perennial with nodding, graceful flowers. E. ‘Pagoda’, a yellow, seriously ‘recurved tepal’ variety (which means the ‘petals’ curve backwards), looks like a hat you might see on the stage at Aladdin. This variety

looks particularly lovely set in number amongst our ubiquitous bluebells. Other April flowering plants include the early Clematis alpina ideal for a North or East facing aspect whose raggedly downward facing petals are replaced by fluffy seed heads for a longer season of interest. ‘White Moth’ is a lovely variety. As with most clematis, some grit in the hole before planting and keeping the base of the plants shaded, helps mimic the plant’s native conditions.

Didsbury Lady Captain Bev Hopcutt was

delighted with the response from the ladies at her club to an innovative evening aimed at improving their knowledge of the sometimes intricate rules of golf.She said: “The aim of the evening was two-fold. Firstly to bring the lady members, especially those ladies who have recently joined the club, up to speed with the rules of golf, marking a card and golf etiquette, and secondly an opportunity for the ladies section to socialise whilst enjoying a selection of cheeses and wines from around the world.

“The feedback was very positive on both counts. The latest version of the ladies section golf reference manual was given to all those present, plus examples of correctly marked cards.

“Ian Wrigley’s interactive presentation was informative for all levels of golfer interspersed with some entertaining anecdotes from his experiences officiating as a rules official on the Tour.

“I bumped into a couple of the newer lady golfers the following Sunday as they came off the course and they told me how they had been able to use their newly acquired knowledge about a free drop

off the path and how to work out the nearest point of relief.

“A pleasing amount of £91 was raised on the night for my charity, the MNDA and I would like to thank everyone for supporting this event.

“Those who attended, including several very experienced golfers were amazed by the amount they learned during a very interesting session staged by Ian Wrigley the professional at Dunham Forest Golf Club.”

For over 20 years Ian has also been a fully qualified R&A and PGA Rules Official.

He has refereed at many tournaments both in this country and overseas, from an exciting Solheim Cup event to an equally enthralling USPGA in Tulsa.

His interest in the rules and his desire to impart this knowledge to a wider audience has made his Rules Show a much sort

after event in golf clubs.

The ladies at Didsbury Golf Club were not only entertained but enlightened by both his fun video and verbal explanation of the rules and how they can work for you.

“Learning the rules is pretty arduous, but knowing them can work for you,” says Ian. “The average club golfer is willing to find out as much as they can, but I suppose half the problem can be finding rule in the rule book.”

Ian’s clear and easy method of explaining the rules has also been put to good use when he goes to the PGA Headquarters at the Belfry in Birmingham, where he also teaches the trainee assistant professionals.

He also sets the exam papers, so he really does know a thing or two about the Rules. If you are interested in holding a Rules Show then he can be contacted through email at [email protected]

Didsbury Black Belt Academy instructor Wayne Edwards

has received a Great Britain Martial Arts award for his contributions to the Olympic Games security training.Wayne entered security training in 2010 after two decades of teaching control and restraint.

In that year physical intervention was made mandatory by the Security Industry Association for all security personnel and Wayne was one of their first instructors.

In 2011 his company was approached to provide training for the Olympic security and they contributed to the education of over 13,000 candidates from both civilian and military sources for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games; a once in a lifetime experience.

Wayne said: “As a trainer for the Games I had on many occasions to work 12 hour days with no weekend breaks to meet the demand.

“But to receive a GBMAA award is an honour and the

best reward for the work. It’s an acknowledgement of the struggle and personal sacrifice put into meeting the demands of providing this training.”

Work has begun at the Simons Sport Field

in Didsbury, the home of Didsbury Toc RUFC and Burnage Metro RUFC on their fantastic new clubhouse and grounds development.The first phase sees a big extension to their clubhouse which will give them top class facilities off the field and this will be followed by grounds

development which will include a new cricket ground.

The work will cause some initial logistical problems as their car park is closed while the work on the club house takes place but it is on schedule and will be less of a problem when the current rugby and soccer seasons finish at the end of April.
