A Community Driven Radio
planned managed andowned by the community
themselves isnt yet to be
introduced in Sri Lanka
The project aims at empoweringrural communities and
strengthening their institutions
to plan village development and
manage resource by themselves
The project is focused on poor communities in rural areas, and
designed specifically to improve
the living standards and income
of the poor category of the rural
communities, particularly
women and youth.
The design basically involves the
empowerment of the beneficiary
communities through
provision of resources (direct
financing),
enabling the communities to
take their own decisions
building capacity through supply
of necessary skills and
information.
Gemidiriya meaning the strength of the
village, adopts a bottom-up approach
facilitating the communities to decide on
their priorities. When addressing the need
for sustainability, the necessity of the
widespread, customized tool for
communication both ways for holistic rural
development was felt and several
communities accepted community radio to
support the process

winning the political acceptance for
another radio initiative but completely driven bythe community
